The Dogs of Ireland - Wheaten Terrier<br />

Sharing much common ancestry<br />

with Kerry Blues and<br />

<strong>Irish</strong> Terriers, the Wheaten Terrier<br />

surfaced as a multi-talented<br />

farm dog. Aside from herding<br />

and guarding livestock, the<br />

Wheaten could take out vermin<br />

at will. The dog became<br />

very popular with the “common<br />

folk,” who were forbidden<br />

from owning <strong>Irish</strong> Wolfhounds,<br />

which had become a status<br />

symbol among aristocrats.<br />

In fact, the Wheaten was<br />

often referred to as the “Poor<br />

Man’s Wolfhound.” Perhaps<br />

owing to this “poor man’s” status,<br />

the Wheaten, in spite of its<br />

longstanding history, would not<br />

gain official breed recognition<br />

in Ireland until 1937.<br />

By the late 20th century,<br />

quite a few Wheatens had emigrated<br />

to Australia and the U.S.<br />

The <strong>American</strong> Kennel Club<br />

describes the Wheaten as: “a<br />

happy, steady dog with an air of<br />
