2010 SCHOLARSHIP FUND<br />

The Jednota Benevolent Foundation, Inc is pleased to announce it is accepting applications for its 2010<br />

Scholarship Program.<br />

THE COMMITTEE SHALL AWARD UP TO TEN ONE-TIME $500 SCHOLARSHIPS<br />

TO THE CANDIDATES WHO BEST SATISFY THE AWARD CRITERIA.<br />

Any individual of <strong>Slovak</strong> descent and <strong>Catholic</strong> faith who will attend an Approved Educational<br />

Institution is eligible for a Scholarship<br />

Applicants will be required to describe accomplishments they believe would qualify them for<br />

recognition in general, and specifically, accomplishments in the areas of:<br />

• Scholarship<br />

• Leadership<br />

• Service to school, church and community<br />

Applicants will also be required to provide:<br />

• An official college transcript of grades or an official copy of applicant’s high school<br />

transcript which indicates applicant’s high school grades and all standardized test scores<br />

achieved, including all ACT or SAT scores; (if applicable)<br />

• One (1) letter of recommendation authored by a teacher, counselor, administrator or an<br />

employment supervisor familiar with the applicant;<br />

• Examples of applicant’s community involvement;<br />

• A list and description of leadership positions held by applicant;<br />

• A list of awards received by applicant for scholastic excellence, community<br />

involvement, or leadership ability;<br />

• A description of the applicant’s academic or career objectives;<br />

• A statement demonstrating an applicant’s need for education financing.<br />

Branch Member 853 Charles Boone celebrates his 11th birthday<br />

Happy Birthday, Charles!<br />

Charles Boone of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, celebrated his 11th birthday in style with a<br />

surprise birthday party, a Birthday Card Party.<br />

Charles received many special birthday cards including cards as far west to California,<br />

south to Florida, and east to Rhode Island and many points in between.<br />

Jednota members from branches 181, 311, 670 and 853 celebrated with him by sending<br />

him cards.<br />

Charles is a member of Branch 853 of Ellsworth and will attend 5th grade.<br />

He is the son of Monica Rodacy Boone current president of Branch 853 and former<br />

National Auditor and former National Pension Board Trustee.<br />

<strong>Slovak</strong> League of America<br />

Announces 2010<br />

Scholarship Grants<br />

The <strong>Slovak</strong> league of America – a civic and cultural federation of Americans of <strong>Slovak</strong><br />

ancestry founded in Cleveland, OH, in 1907 – is pleased to announce that it will once again<br />

offer the John and Julia Demko Memorial Scholarship Grants of $750.00 to deserving students<br />

this year. Any student of <strong>Slovak</strong> ancestry currently enrolled or who will be enrolled<br />

full time at a college, university, or professional school in the fall semester may apply for this<br />

grant. These grants are available to students who are on the undergraduate or graduate<br />

level of study. These grants honor the memory of John and Julia Demko, well-known <strong>Slovak</strong><br />

fraternal and cultural activists of Bayonne, NJ.<br />

Applicants are asked to complete a study paper on some theme from <strong>Slovak</strong> history or<br />

culture of no less than five type-written double-spaced pages. The completed application<br />

along with the essay is to be returned by the deadline date of November 1, 2010. Grants will<br />

be paid to the individual student in December 2010.<br />

educational goals. Since then, more than 125 students have benefited from this fund.
