Election Results –The officers elected to serve for the 20052006 Quad City Section year are: Shannon Brockmann –Chair (elected in 2004) Chad Yagow –ChairElect Steve Newbery –Past Chair Janet Maas –Secretary Kyle Jahn –Treasurer Steve Juhasz –Nominating Committee Eric Viall –Nominating Committee Scott Wilcox –Nominating Committee He has been an active member of the community including Junior Achievement, Quad City Chamber of Commerce Career Day, an English instructor at the Fisk Language School in Horizontina, Brasil and a volunteer at the Memorial Heights United Methodist Church in Rock Island. Miles is a Past Chair of the Quad City Section and holds a B.S. and M.S. in Agricultural Engineering from Kansas State University and is currently working on his MBA from the University of Chicago. He lives in Port Byron, Illinois with his wife, Cortney, and their two daughters. Section News – A Quad City Section member and the Section itself were honored at the National Engineers Week Banquet held by the Quad City Engineering and Science Council (QCESC) on 25 February at the John Deere Pavilion (see http://www.qcesc.org/Eng%20Award%202005.htm for more details). Section Member Miles Keaton was recognized as the QCESC Junior Engineer of the Year. Quad City Section Chair Steve Newbery (on the right) receives the QCESC Society of the Year Award on behalf of the Section. Miles Keaton Miles is employed at the John Deere Seeding Group as a Product Program Manager. Miles is an innovative engineer with worldwide engineering experience including a 14 month assignment at John Deere’s Horizontina, Brasil facility. His seeding technology improvements have significantly improved planter precision and productivity for John The Quad City Section was also selected as the QCESC’s Society of the Year. The Section’s outreach programs in such areas as support of scholarships, the QC Elite robotics team and the ASAE ¼ Scale Tractor Design Contest and the AMC were cited as examples of the Section’s outreach to others. The May issue of ASAE’s Resource magazine had articles on the QCESC’s recognition of Miles Keaton and the Quad City Section. Congratulations to Section Member and Past Chair Rusty Unterzuber on his election to the ASAE Board of Trustees. Rusty will start a two year term 4
of office at this year’s Annual International Meeting in Tampa. The Section received a note of thanks from the local QC Elite FIRST robotics team for our financial support this past year. The team placed second in the St. Louis regional out of 44 teams and won the Daimler/Chrysler Team Spirit Award. At the Chicago regional, they placed 5 th out of 37 teams and won the Xerox Creativity Award. See http://www.qcelite.com/ for more details. As of May 9 th , The Section had a checking account balance of $ 914.47, a savings account balance of $ 8,801.86 and a certificate of deposit for $ 2,055.34. Scholarship Recipients –This year, the Quad City Section increased its scholarship amount from $ 750 to $ 1,000 and again awarded two scholarships. Brian Peters (an Iowa State junior from Clinton, Iowa) and Bethany Frew (an Ohio State sophomore from Carrollton, Ohio) were chosen as the recipients and recognized at the March meeting. Each submitted an essay with their scholarship applications which follow: Brian Peters “I believe that the foundation of every successful person begins with leadership. Without leadership in today’s society, nothing happens. I believe that it is important to take initiative, and to strive to achieve the next level. One of my main career goals is to become an influential leader within the agricultural industry, and to also set an example for future generations. Organizations like the American 5 Society of Agricultural Engineers have played a vital role in letting me demonstrate my leadership potential. By serving as past ASAE Vice President last year, I have been able to take my leadership role to the next level. My most recent leadership experience was this past fall when I became involved in Engineers Week 2004. These leadership positions have allowed me to expand my horizons, and have given me valuable experience for the years ahead. The goals of ASAE truly lie within that of an engineer who possesses superb character and excellent leadership skills. This is why ASAE has developed into such a great organization. The success of this organization truly belongs to the variety of talented and influential members who know what it takes to be successful. In addition to leadership, I want to also apply my knowledge of science and engineering to improve the agricultural industry. Currently I am a junior and am specializing in the power and machinery option of Agricultural Engineering. This past summer I experienced my first engineering related job at Archer Daniels Midland, an agricultural corn processing plant in Clinton, IA. As an engineering intern, I was given a lot of responsibility which I really enjoyed. My major project for the summer included testing fiber dewatering machines to see if there was room for efficiency improvements by decreasing exiting feed moistures. While working at ADM on that project, I figured out that engineering certainly was the right major and career pathway for me. I felt a sense of passion and dedication toward the engineering profession, which I believe will carry on into my fulltime career. After returning to school in the fall, I found out that a lot of the basic engineering principles that I had learned carried on into the classroom. This has led to me having more interest in my engineering classes, and has also allowed me to relate the information learned in class to the engineering profession. One of my main career goals in life is to be able to contribute to the field of agriculture as well as society as a whole. By making agricultural machines more efficient or by designing the next generation of combines to harvest crops, I will ultimately be able to contribute to the field of agriculture. Doing this will certainly yield success.
