“<strong>Sustainable</strong> consumption is truly possible today.” That is the message conveyed by the<br />
<strong>Sustainable</strong> <strong>Shopping</strong> <strong>Basket</strong>, regardless of the limitations involved. And something else is<br />
just as clear: People who want to start consuming sustainably need to take action! Those who<br />
are seriously interested can accomplish more for themselves and our society than they might<br />
think at first. Let’s see what it takes.<br />
<strong>Sustainable</strong> consumption would be quite easy if there were an organic food store just around<br />
the corner, a kindergarten within walking distance, a local sports club just a few minutes<br />
away by bike, a streetcar stop right across the street – and if you had an affordable home in a<br />
quiet neighbourhood.<br />
But most people can only dream of such an ideal world. <strong>The</strong>re is almost always something<br />
lacking, and compromises are a part of everyday life. <strong>The</strong> compromises we make depend on<br />
our living circumstances, our income and the options available to us. Neither a neighbourhood<br />
kindergarten nor an efficient rural public transportation system can be made to appear<br />
like a rabbit from a magician’s hat. Is sustainable consumption possible for us at all? What are<br />
