Dr. Evgeny P. VELIKHOV<br />

Dr. Evgeny P. Velikhov has been President of the<br />
Russian Research Centre Kurchatov Institute<br />
since 1992 and simultaneously holds a professorship<br />
in the Faculty of Physics of Moscow<br />
State University (since 1968), the presidency<br />
of the Russian Offshore Development Company<br />
(since 1992), and is Chairman of the Board of<br />
the Internati<strong>on</strong>al Development of Therm<strong>on</strong>uclear<br />
Pilot Reactor Programme (Russia, USA,<br />
European Uni<strong>on</strong> and Japan) (since 1988). From<br />
1977 to 1996 he was Vice-President of the<br />
Russian Academy of Sciences and from 1983<br />
to 1990 Academician-Secretary of the Divisi<strong>on</strong><br />
of Informatics, Computer Science, and Automati<strong>on</strong><br />
of the Russian Academy of Sciences.<br />
He is a member of the Russian Federati<strong>on</strong><br />
President Defence Council, the Scientific and<br />
Technical Policy Council, Co-chairman of the<br />
Culture Council, and is Russia’s representative<br />
in the IAEA Internati<strong>on</strong>al Council for C<strong>on</strong>trolled<br />
Therm<strong>on</strong>uclear Fusi<strong>on</strong>. He is Corresp<strong>on</strong>ding<br />
Member and Academician (plasma physics)<br />
of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow,<br />
and H<strong>on</strong>orary Member of the Swedish Royal<br />
Academy of Engineering Sciences. His scientific<br />
interests are plasma physics, c<strong>on</strong>trolled<br />
therm<strong>on</strong>uclear fusi<strong>on</strong>, high power pulse magnetohydrodynamics,<br />
generators, gaseous and<br />
technological lasers. He has authored more<br />
than 150 publicati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Hebe Vessuri has a D.Phil. in Social Anthropology<br />
from the University of Oxford, and currently<br />
directs the Department of Science Studies and<br />
coordinates the graduate program <strong>on</strong> Social<br />
Studies of Science of the Venezuelan Institute<br />
of Scientific Research (IVIC), Caracas. She has<br />
c<strong>on</strong>tributed to the emergence and c<strong>on</strong>solidati<strong>on</strong><br />
of the field of social studies of science and<br />
technology in Latin America. Her research focus<br />
is <strong>on</strong> sociology and c<strong>on</strong>temporary history of science<br />
in Latin America, science policy, sociology<br />
of technology, expertise and democracy, and<br />
social participati<strong>on</strong>/exclusi<strong>on</strong>. Dr. Vessuri is<br />
associated with the editorial boards of several<br />
internati<strong>on</strong>al journals, including Social Studies<br />
of Science; Science, Technology & Society;<br />
Industry & Higher Educati<strong>on</strong>; Interciencia; and<br />
Redes. She is also a member of the Trustees’<br />
executive of the internet science and development<br />
network, SciDev.Net. She currently chairs<br />
the Latin American Scientific Committee of<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Forum</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> Higher Educati<strong>on</strong>, Research<br />
and Knowledge, and is <strong>on</strong> the scientific committees<br />
of the Internati<strong>on</strong>al Human Development<br />
Program (IHDP), the Internati<strong>on</strong>al Council for<br />
Risk Governance (ICRG), Internati<strong>on</strong>al Council<br />
for Science (ICSU)’s Committee <strong>on</strong> Scientific<br />
Planning and Review (CSPR). She is a member<br />
of the Governing Council of the United Nati<strong>on</strong>s<br />
University (UNU). She was a former vice-president<br />
of the Internati<strong>on</strong>al Uni<strong>on</strong> of Anthropological<br />
and Ethnological Sciences (IUAES), representing<br />
it at the Internati<strong>on</strong>al Social Science<br />

Since graduating in social sciences in 1971, he<br />

evaluati<strong>on</strong>, restructuring, transfer and<br />
co-operati<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>cerning science and technology;<br />
am<strong>on</strong>g which he was Assistant Head of the<br />
Science and Educati<strong>on</strong> Divisi<strong>on</strong> of the Office of<br />
the Federal Chancellor (1994-1997), Assistant<br />
Head of the Divisi<strong>on</strong> of General Issues of Research<br />
Instituti<strong>on</strong>s of the Ministry of Educati<strong>on</strong><br />
and Research, with focus <strong>on</strong> technology transfer,<br />
co-operati<strong>on</strong> of science and industry, and<br />
Vice Chairpers<strong>on</strong> of the OECD working group<br />
“Steering and Funding of Research Instituti<strong>on</strong>s“<br />
(1997-2001). He has held two internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />
