Greetings <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> the ground floor!<br />

We investigate the past,<br />

And document the present,<br />

To be preserved for the future.<br />

With these lines in mind <strong>and</strong> inscribed <strong>on</strong> their award<br />

certificates, the awards for the Family His<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ry Essay<br />

Challenge were distributed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the nine deserving<br />

winners. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>pic of family his<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ry brought generati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>gether as s<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> daughters diligently researched<br />

their father’s <strong>and</strong> mother’s ancestry. The lives of the<br />

families’ famous <strong>and</strong> not quite so notable were presented<br />

in a wide variety of writing styles. Truly all entrants<br />

were winners, but the following were chosen as the <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ps<br />

in their classes am<strong>on</strong>g the hundreds of entrants:<br />

Mary Cooperider Fergus<strong>on</strong> with her daughter Martha<br />

Jane Fergus<strong>on</strong> Wats<strong>on</strong> - Born 1846<br />

Darla’s ances<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs, the Fergus<strong>on</strong> Family, joined the<br />

Iowa Company wag<strong>on</strong> train after crossing the Missouri<br />

River <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> Council Bluffs, Iowa, in 1849. They traveled<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> California <str<strong>on</strong>g>by</str<strong>on</strong>g> ox-drawn wag<strong>on</strong>. After spending time in<br />

the gold fields near Marysville <strong>and</strong> Yuba City, the<br />

family finally settled in The Alex<strong>and</strong>er Valley in 1857.<br />

There are other pho<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>graphs <strong>and</strong> memorabilia of the<br />

Fergus<strong>on</strong> family <strong>on</strong> loan <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> another relative <strong>and</strong><br />

member John Laws<strong>on</strong>.<br />

I have been so immersed in the his<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ry of pi<strong>on</strong>eer<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Healdsburg</str<strong>on</strong>g> that I actually dreamed about it the other<br />

day! Hope the upcoming deluxe issue of the Russian<br />

Families gather in fr<strong>on</strong>t of the Museum after awards.<br />

On that same day the family his<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ry of l<strong>on</strong>gtime<br />

volunteer <strong>and</strong> Museum member Darla Williams<br />

Budworth was highlighted in a display of pi<strong>on</strong>eer<br />

artifacts <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> her family’s collecti<strong>on</strong>. On loan <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

museum for display is a h<strong>and</strong>- woven, h<strong>and</strong>-dyed<br />

coverlet made <str<strong>on</strong>g>by</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mary Cooperider Fergus<strong>on</strong>.<br />

A set of pink glass berry bowls, ceramic butter<br />

dishes <strong>and</strong> some silver spo<strong>on</strong>s accompanied <str<strong>on</strong>g>by</str<strong>on</strong>g> some<br />

charming family pho<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>graphs are also <strong>on</strong> display.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Healdsburg</str<strong>on</strong>g> Academy, 1868, c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong><br />

underway in 1857 (fr<strong>on</strong>t page letter)<br />

River Recorder transports you back in time as it did for<br />

me, working <strong>on</strong> it. Edi<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r Arnold Santucci recruited<br />

June Smith, Charlotte Anders<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> Darla Meeker <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

join cura<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r Dan Murley <strong>and</strong> me <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> present a range of<br />

articles, map <strong>and</strong> artifacts <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1857 <str<strong>on</strong>g>Healdsburg</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>and</strong><br />

earlier. We
