Schallenkamp believes the relationship<br />

between the university and region is<br />

important. BHSU is a significant resource<br />

for educational opportunities, cultural<br />

experiences,<br />

athletic programs<br />

and other out<br />

reach activities.<br />

"We must be a player in the state. As<br />

the president of BHSU, I'm the external<br />

face of the university. I'll be attending<br />

statewide meetings and working with<br />

that will make that work," Schallenkamp<br />

says.<br />

"There's a wealth of knowledge and<br />

expertise at <strong>Black</strong><br />

<strong>Hills</strong> <strong>State</strong>,"<br />

Schallenkamp<br />

says. "We have<br />

exceptional fac<br />

ulty and staff,<br />

and we need to<br />

be assertive in<br />

getting our story<br />

out. We need to<br />

be active in talk<br />

ing about all the wonderful things hap<br />

pening at BHSU and let others know that<br />

we are engaged in the community and<br />

region."<br />

Withafulltimecommitmenttothe<br />

university, Schallenkamp dedicates most<br />

of her time to university related duties.<br />

"I don't have spare time. My commit<br />

ment to the campus is really a 24 7 job,"<br />

Schallenkamp says.<br />

Since moving to the <strong>Black</strong> <strong>Hills</strong> meant<br />

moving away from family members, she<br />

and her husband are making concentrat<br />

ed efforts to stay connected with their<br />

children, and especially their grandchil<br />

dren, as they become accustomed to their<br />

new location.<br />

"Ken and I enjoy our Saturday morn<br />

ings.Wehavearoominthehousewhere<br />

we drink tea and watch the birds. It's a<br />

special time for us," Schallenkamp says.<br />

She is also looking forward to spending<br />

time enjoying their new location in the<br />

<strong>Black</strong> <strong>Hills</strong>.<br />
