2 MORE KILCOO ALUMNI LOST...
Remembering George Brigden and Paul Setterington
SSadly we must report the passing of two more members of the
Kilcoo community, George Brigden and Paul Setterington.
George attended Kilcoo until 1947, and as was mentioned in the
polio article in this edition his summers at Kilcoo were brought to
an end because of the disease. George spent most of the following
year in Toronto isolation hospitals, but still enrolled at university
in 1948 and went on to complete his law degree and enjoy
a very successful career as a barrister. Later in life, however, his
polio symptoms returned and at age 78 he passed away October
31st of last year. In the fall of 2006 it was with much regret that
he advised us that he would be unable to attend the 75th anniversary
festivities. George leaves behind a legacy of tenacity and a
strength of character that are reflected in the 2006 Legion of
Honour award received from his Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
Paul attended Kilcoo as a camper beginning in 1954 and finished
up in 1961 as a CIT. Following his years at Kilcoo he became an
insurance claims adjuster in southwestern Ontario and as he had
at Kilcoo, so too in his professional life he gained a long list of
admirers who appreciated his friendly, fun loving and “giving”
personality. “Smokey” as he became known at Kilcoo, brought
life to any gathering with his slightly hoarse conversation, a life
ended too soon this January 21st. We extend our sympathies to his
brother Al and son Jeff both of whom are Kilcoo alumni, as well
as to the rest of his family.
