History of Princeton United Methodist Church
175 th Celebration – May 2, 2010
“In the beginning was the Word . . .”
John 1:1
The Word of God is powerful for a multitude of reasons. It reveals God’s
tremendous love for us through Jesus Christ. It shows us the way of faith and salvation. It
constantly inspires us to live daily for Christ. It tells stories of faith, but also, of history as
God has entered time and space, and done amazing works in our world. I could go on and on,
but I want to consider what this powerful Word has done in more recent time.
175 years ago in 1835, Watkinsville Methodist Church helped establish a church for
the families in the Princeton Mill area. The Word made the love of God come alive in their
hearts, salvation, a new way of living, and the desire to make a difference in the world of God’s
glory. The rest is a 175 year history of what is now the Princeton United Methodist
Church.
When speaking of the things of God, 1835 is recent history, but think about this.
Only 40 years earlier, George Washington was inaugurated as the first President of the
U.S. In 1835 the American Civil War would not happen for another 26 years. You would
have to wait 34 years for the Transcontinental Rail Road to be finished. It seems hard to
believe, but the last battle of the American Indian Wars would not happen for 55 more years.
Bulldog fans will not see a UGA football team until 1892 or 57 years later.
So much has happened and so much has changed in the last 175 years. Still some
things remain the same. The words contained in these pages bear witness to the love and
grace of God. This book tells of people who sought to follow Jesus and glorify Him in their
daily lives. Truly, this represents just a small part of that story of faith and history that began
2000 years ago, but this is our part. Perhaps in these pages, you will catch more than a
glimpse of by-gone days and see a people’s love for their Lord and their desire to bring
Christ to others.
In His Service,
