Time Flies, Fast! What Are You Doing About It
FROM THE RECTOR
A
s usual, autumn in Northeast Ohio is going
by all too quickly. It seems like it was only
yesterday that we launched our fall programs.
Now we are headed toward Thanksgiving, with
Advent and Christmas soon to come. Many testify
that time doesn’t slow down as we age, but seems
to speed up. That is, our experience of the fleetingness
of time intensifies year by year. This has been
my experience, and maybe yours, too. Each decade
of life seems to disappear into the past faster than
the previous one.
So as time flies, and maybe flies faster, we have to
ask if we are taking care of our souls and shaping
our lives, at their core, in the way that we want to,
in our best moments, and in light of what we know
about life—and in light of the God of truth and
love revealed in Jesus. Posing these kinds of questions
for self-examination is a routine part of the
Christian life. Churches everywhere are realizing
that individual commitment has to go along with
community support. Establishing good programs
is part of our life, laying down challenges is essential,
too.
So please consider attending the following:
Our Renewal Retreat (here at St. Paul’s this year)
has as our guest speaker on November 5-6, The
Rev. Fleming Rutledge. She will lead us more
deeply into the Scriptures, a chief means by which
we grow in Christ and sustain our faith. Almost
always, lasting renewal of the person, and of the
church, happens only when there is sustained
engagement with the Scriptures. Fleming will lead
us, imaginatively and joyfully, into their treasures.
A Quiet Day, on the first Saturday of Lent, December
3, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., is part of
the penetrating spiritual formation necessary to
grow, and will be a commendable way to begin the
Advent Season. Amjad Samuel will lead guided
meditations on this day around the theme of Jesus
and Hope.
Our Radical Discipleship course continues on
Sunday mornings through November, examining
the themes of Balance, Dependence, and Death.
Service, faithful and intentional participation in
worship, looking out for the common good, and
treating others well in the name of Christ, are all
core disciplines, too. If some small persistent voice
whispers to you about growing in grace through
the events mentioned above, or through other
forms of service, listen to it! I pray you will. And
find something in this late autumnal season in our
mission to be the heaven-sent offering of your precious
time back to God.
Warmly,
In Christ,
The subtitle of this book ‘Moving
God’s Love from your Head to your
Heart’ says a lot. This is the book we
offer to newcomers, as one way into the
faith. It’s fresh, accessible, and insightful.
The author combines good stories with
the substance of Christian faith. Recently,
we have offered the book for sale to
all on Sundays at the front desk. It’s a ten
dollar investment worth every penny.
Soon we hope to have a blog on the
web devoted to a discussion of it. One reviewer praises Love
Beyond Reason like this: “Every once in a great while, a new author
dares to write of divine love, and shapes it into forms more
vivid, more human, more beautiful, and more powerful than we
have ever seen. John Ortberg does this rare thing for us in Love
Beyond Reason. It’s rag doll stories alone could turn this book
into a classic.
I
t is fall. It is harvest time. In ancient Israel, it was the time of the year for the
Feast of the Harvest when the first fruits of the crops were offered to God. This
offering was an acknowledgment that the harvest was from God and belonged
to Him. And it continues today. Even though we are not an agricultural society
as the ancient Hebrews were, the “best practices of stewardship” tell us to give
God “off the top” of what we make, rather than from our leftovers – a few dollars
when we think we can.
The Feast of the Harvest is the biblical basis for the prevalent custom of conducting
annual stewardship campaigns in the fall and, as a result, there is a lot written
at this time of year on the subject of stewardship. Recently, I read an article by The
Rev. Laurel Johnston, Stewardship Officer for the Episcopal Church, that I would
like to share with you. While this may not be the season when we as a parish explore
our pledge commitments, the ideas Laurel presents are applicable all year.
Scripture tells us For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under
heaven (Ecclesiastes 3:1). The season of Fall is here, the days are shorter, the air
a bit brisker and the leaves begin to change – God’s great gift of color to us. The
blessing and invitation of this season is to ponder: how do we embrace practices
of gratitude and thanksgiving for the blessings that have been given
This is the season to explore how our pledge commitment reflects an offering of
praise and thanksgiving. This is the sacrifice God calls us to make: to be a Eucharistic
people. Gratitude is not always easy; it is not always the obvious choice. Joan
Chittister writes that life is an ongoing exercise in learning to sing Alleluia, even
when we face moments that don’t feel like Alleluia moments. The spiritual work
of gratitude is to offer praise and thanksgiving for the entirety of life – the good
and the bad, the joyful and sorrowful, so that we claim the fullness of our life as
a gift from God. When we do this, our lives become truly Eucharistic, a feast of
gratitude.
How will this season under heaven be a time for you to embrace a practice of
gratitude
Gratefully,
Christmas Gifts
Each year at St. Paul’s Family Christmas Eve Service
our children bring gifts to the altar after the pageant.
These gifts are taken directly after the service to Access,
which is a transitional program for abused women and
their children. These gifts are greatly anticipated and
appreciated each year. This is a beautiful time to help
our children begin to learn about sharing God’s love in a
concrete way.
Here is a list of items they are looking for. Please wrap
the gift and tag it for a girl or boy with age range for
use.
Baby items – diapers, bottles, onesies, formula & wipes
Children’s underwear- all sizes
Winter coats – all sizes
Shoes, boots & slippers – all sizes
Any questions, or if you would like to help deliver these
gifts to Access after the 5:00 service on Christmas Eve,
please contact Sheila Svoboda. 330-836-9327 ext. 32 or
CONGREGATIONAL CARE
Stephen Ministers Know ~ HOLIDAYS CAN BE DIFFICULT
When our lives are touched with loss, whether it’s due to the death of a loved one, job loss, divorce or other
circumstances, celebrating the holidays may seem impossible or at least very difficult. Thanksgiving and
Christmas are just around the corner. If you are grieving a loss, try adopting some of the following suggestions.
SUGGESTIONS FOR COPING WITH THE HOLIDAYS
aAsk God for strength and peace.
aDevelop a plan for the holidays. Be aware that the stress may affect you emotionally, cognitively and physically.
aLet others know what you need and want. People often want to be helpful, but they can’t read your mind.
Help them be supportive.
aDon’t try to please everyone. Just say “no” if you don’t want to do something.
aLet go of the “shoulds” like Christmas cards. Be aware of expectations you place on yourself and let go of those
things that could be difficult for you.
aAdapt cherished traditions rather than ignoring them all together.
aDo something for someone else. Invite others who are alone to join you or volunteer somewhere.
aAttend church at a different time and day and come early to meditate and pray.
aMerry & Happy are probably not going to be part of your vocabulary. Decide on an
appropriate response now, before you’re faced with it.
aShop early or online. Gift cards can ease the stress of finding just the right gift.
aAllow time for yourself but be careful not to become isolated.
aKnow that whether bidden or not, God is present with you.
FROM THE TREASURER
Operating Budget 2011/2012
Our operating budget supports everything we do: all ministries,
new programs, and keeping traditions going strong. With
a renewed, emerging vision, we continue to press ahead. Our
giving back to God supports new initiatives and funds lasting
responsibilities.
With this in mind, the finance committee recommended, and
the vestry approved, the following budget. Progress has been
made, yet our budget cries out for significant increases in fundraising.
INCOME AMOUNT % OF TOTAL
Contributions
Pledge income $ 652,150 53%
Non-pledge income 83,300 7%
Other Contributions 28,500 2%
Total Contributions $ 763,950 62%
Endowment Foundation $ 304,800 25%
Trusts for Operations $ 129,400 10%
Rent, honorariums, etc. $ 33,700 3%
Total Income $ 1,231,850 100%
EXPENSES AMOUNT % OF TOTAL
Clergy, Staff & Administration $ 509,300 39%
Property $ 306,700 23%
Diocesan Assessment $ 182,200 14%
Education $ 145,850 11%
Music $ 97,600 8%
Parish Life $ 50,000 4%
Lay Staff Salary Reserve $ 14,000 1%
Total Expenses $ 1,305,650 100%
Projected operating deficit $ (73,800)
clergy. Administration expenditures include: support staff compensation
(executive assistant, financial administrator and
part-time printer, receptionist, and business manager), audit
and appraisal expenses, office supplies, telephone, computer
and website support. Property expenditures include: sexton
compensation, utilities, maintenance and repairs, supplies,
property replacement, grounds and insurance.
Education expenditures include: education and youth staff compensation,
curriculum purchases, youth projects, confirmation
retreats, supplies, food, and transportation.
Music expenditures include:
music staff compensation, funding for
Christmas and Easter brass, and other
music department expenses. Parish
Life expenditures include: postage,
printing, worship supplies, stewardship,
newcomer initiatives, advertising,
parish retreat and fellowship. The
Lay Staff Salary reserve represents an
amount in the budget for staff retention
adjustments.
The Diocesan Assessment supports
Diocesan missions and operations.
This budget projects a deficit of
$73,800, 5.7% of the budget. While
still a deficit, it is smaller in amount
and percent, than last year’s budgeted
deficit. How will we finance
this We can finance this through
(a) parishioners giving above and
beyond their pledges in support of
our mission, (b) continuing to search
out operating efficiencies, (c) using
the remainder of our undesignated
operating funds and (d) obtaining
additional funding from our operating
trusts.
Pledge income continues to be the largest single source of
income, as it is and must be for all congregations. Pledges
provide the lion’s share of the funds for our programming.
Without robust pledging things grind to a halt.
Endowment Foundation income amount includes the church’s
regular quarterly contribution from the Foundation, as well as
a transfer of funds that had been received by the church and
set aside in prior years. Additionally, we received additional
income due to a recalculation of trust income pursuant to a
change in Ohio law.
No one favors deficits. Given our flat
level of expenditures, it is apparent
that, as always, our financial issues are at their center, revenue
issues. Congregations that accept proportional giving as the
goal flourish compared to those that don’t.
If you have questions concerning the church finances, please do
not hesitate to contact me at 330-836-9327 ext 24 or by email at
spetrochuk@stpaulsakron.org.
Clergy expenditures include: clergy compensation, mileage,
discretionary funds, clergy relocation funding, and supply
2011 Stock Transfer
As we approach the end of the calendar year, some parishioners
may wish to fulfill their pledge by donating stock. When transferring
shares of stock to St. Paul’s, please follow these instructions
to make certain that you, the donor, can be identified by
the Church, credited the correct contribution amount and that
the transaction goes smoothly.
ST. PAUL’S MEMORIAL GARDEN
Planning for the End of Life
The Memorial Garden at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church was
dedicated on All Saints’ Sunday, 1992, for the interment
of ashes directly into the earth for those choosing
cremation and wanting their final resting place to be on the
grounds of the church.
St. Paul’s has an account with the Akron, Ohio branch of Wells
Fargo Advisors, LLC. Securities may be transferred directly into
this account from your personal brokerage account. At your
direction, your broker can transfer any number of shares of stock
to St. Paul’s account, thus eliminating the need to issue stock
certificates in St. Paul’s name.
Please instruct your brokerage firm with a Letter of Authorization
to make the transfer as follows:
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church
DTC Code/Clearing #0141
Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC
Akron, Ohio 44333
Please notify either Tom Valtman (ext 22) or Sherrie Petrochuk
(ext 24) at St. Paul’s that you have made the stock transfer. We
CANNOT identify you from just the stock transfer information we
receive and therefore need to hear from you to give you proper
credit for your donation.
If you have any questions concerning the stock transfer, you may
contact either Laurie Pierrot at Wells Fargo at 330-668-7784 or
laurie.pierrot@wfadvisors.com or Frank McDonald (also at Wells
Fargo) at frank.mcdonald@wfadvisors.com.
Beyond being a place for the interment of ashes and for remembering
the deceased, the garden has become an important
component of St. Paul’s Church grounds. It is alive with
beautiful plantings; benches create sitting areas for peaceful
meditation and reflection. You are invited to visit the garden,
to linger, and to reap the benefits of this special place.
Should you desire at this time to choose St. Paul’s Memorial
Garden as your final resting place, contact Marcheta Scott
at 330-836-9327 (ext 21) to purchase an affordable interment
agreement or to set up an appointment with a member of
the clergy to discuss funeral arrangements which will reflect
your desired wishes.
Donations to the Memorial Garden are gratefully accepted.
Advent Altar Flowers
During the Advent season, the altar
flowers will reflect a period of quietness
and contemplation, as we look forward
to the joyous celebration of the birth of
our Savior.
As is our custom, the Flower Guild is
planning special Christmas Festival
flowers to mark His coming. We receive
gifts to support our ministry and
memorialize or honor a special person
or event. If you wish to do so, you may
contribute to the festival flowers in
the envelopes provided for ‘Christmas
Memorial Flowers and Greens’.
Throughout the year, Flower Guild
volunteers will prepare small arrangements
from the altar flowers appropriate
for shut-ins, hospitals, and nursing
homes. To carry St. Paul’s good wishes,
Flower Delivery Ministry volunteers
will distribute these arrangements to
parishioners and others who are unable
to be with us.
During the year you may also wish to
consider supporting the Guild through
an altar remembrance on a particular
Sunday. To do so, you may contact
Nancy Parker at (330) 867-1538. Your
memorial gifts will be noted in the bulletin
and/or a subsequent newsletter.
Thank you for your support – may we
wish you, your family, and friends a
very blessed Christmas and New Year!
