Think “F-A-S-T” for early warning signs of stroke

Stroke is an umbrella term for a
common acute onset event that
affects mainly middle aged and
elderly Americans.
The term “stroke” actually
refers to a problem with the blood
flow to the brain causing tissue
death. The most common form of
stroke is called an acute ischemic
stroke. This is caused by a blockage
to the arteries leading to the
brain.
Acute ischemic strokes can be
further subdivided into two types:
thrombotic, and embolic.
Thrombotic strokes are caused
by a blood clot forming within the
arteries in the brain itself.
Thrombotic strokes can be even
further subdivided into large-vessel
and small-vessel thromboses
depending on their locations in the
brain. Large-vessel thrombosis
affects larger arteries within the
brain, while small-vessel thrombosis,
also called lacuner stroke,
affects smaller arteries leading to
the more remote parts.
Thrombotic strokes are the
most common form of stroke.
Embolic strokes occur when a
blood clot forms in a different
artery and travels to the brain
where it essentially gets stuck,
thereby blocking blood flow to the
relevant area. These are marginally
less common than thrombotic
strokes.
Ischemic strokes can be treated
with tissue plasminogen activator,

enzyme found in endothelial cells,
which line the insides of blood vessels.
It helps break up blood clots
allowing blood to return to the
blocked off areas, and increasing
the likelihood of recovery. After
treatment with tPA, many stroke
symptoms are lessened, if not
reversed completely. However, the
drug is only effective within the first
three hours of the onset of the
stroke, after which it can cause
dangerous bleeding in the brain.
Unfortunately, only a small percentage
of ischemic stroke patients
actually receive tPA, mainly due to
the delays in seeking treatment.
Stroke symptoms are often written
off as minor, and ignored for days
before seeking medical attention.
As such, the effects can be permanent,
and recovery difficult and
often incomplete, so it is iomportant
to know the symptoms of
ischemic strokes and call 911
immediately upon onset, even if it
seems silly or unnecessary and the
patient feels fine.
A mnemonic device has been
developed to help the public recognize
the symptoms in themselves
and family members in an attempt
to minimize loss of brain function
in patients.

Musical comedy comes to Finley Gym
The Glass Harp, the latest production of the
Socorro Community Theater at Finley Gym, has long
been considered among enthusiasts as one of the lost
treasures of the musical theater. Showtimes are 7:30
p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug.
28. Directed by Eileen Comstock, the cast features Jo
Ann Powers, Darlene Torres, Jake Foley, Yvonne
Allbritton, and Jane Anderson.
The Glass Harp, by Kenward Elmslie and Claibe
Richardson, is based on the novel by Truman capote.
The story tells of Dollyheart, a sweet-natured spinster
with a secret recipe for an elixir cure, and her
demanding sister, Verena, who is determined to exploit
the recipe for her own purposes.
When tensions rise, Dollyheart leaves her sister’s
house with their orphaned teenage nephew and longtime
housekeeper in tow to take up residence in a tree
house. It isn’t long before other outcasts join their
extended family including the revivalist Babylove and
the children who comprise her Miracle Show, and the
dearly eccentric Judge Cool. The deep emotional currents
of these shifting relationships lead to an uplifting,
compelling reconciliation.
The Grass Harp is a Broadway cult favorite and
anyone who has experienced its emotional tug and
exhilarating score easily understands why.
