Gauteng Stuntmen’s Quest to<br />
Remain the World Re<strong>co</strong>rd Holders<br />
Venerable Gauteng stuntmen Enri<strong>co</strong> Schoeman and André de Kock have resumed their quest to remain the world<br />
re<strong>co</strong>rd holders for riding a motorcycle through a fire tunnel.<br />
The pairing, who set the current re<strong>co</strong>rd at 73,5 metres<br />
with a Kawasaki engined Australian Sidecar<br />
in Vaalwater last year, will return to the Limpopo<br />
Province town in August.<br />
This time they will tackle a tunnel of 85 metres.<br />
Schoeman (55) and De Kock (58) have <strong>co</strong>nducted<br />
a testing programme at the recent Rand Easter<br />
Show, running the 1270cc machine through a series<br />
of 25-metre tunnels.<br />
They recently <strong>co</strong>nducted one final test run in<br />
the parking lot of the Brakpan Carnival Mall.<br />
The run took place in <strong>co</strong>njunction with a full<br />
programme of Youth and Fathers Day festivities at<br />
the venue, with spectator admission free, gratis and<br />
for nothing.<br />
“After catching fire properly on two occasions,<br />
we have a healthy respect for this venture, and we<br />
have found some valuable partners to help make it<br />
successful and kind of safe,” said Schoeman.<br />
The East Rand Khalanga Engineering Projects<br />
<strong>co</strong>mpany will <strong>co</strong>nstruct the tunnel, <strong>co</strong>mprising<br />
steel frames, triple layer cardboard and a rich mixture<br />
of petrol and diesel.<br />

“Khalanga’s engineers <strong>co</strong>unt among the <strong>co</strong>untry’s<br />
best, and they have devised a safer way to <strong>co</strong>nstruct<br />
the tunnel than we used previously. Their involvement<br />
has given us the impetus and <strong>co</strong>nfidence<br />
to plan a further world re<strong>co</strong>rd attempt, and we are<br />
tremendously grateful to them,” Schoeman added.<br />
The Kawasaki has been fine tuned by the<br />
Kempton Park KCR Motorcycles <strong>co</strong>ncern, to make<br />
sure it does not develop problems at some lifethreatening<br />
part of a run.<br />
The First Race <strong>co</strong>mpany in Johannesburg have<br />
supplied the riders with brand new fire retardent<br />
racing suits and underwear, after their previous<br />
suits suffered fire damage at the Rand Show.<br />
The motorcycle has been painted pink, as part<br />
of a cancer awareness project, and Saturday’s run<br />
will be done in <strong>co</strong>njunction with a charity project<br />
at the Carnival Mall.<br />
The project, run by the mall and East Rand<br />
Stereo 93,9s, will en<strong>co</strong>urage patrons to donate blankets<br />
or tinned food for the less privileged.<br />
