Viva Vireya! What an enthusiastic
membership we have and what an
impressive turnout for our last
meeting – more a work party than
a meeting. We met at the Panaewa
Rainforest Zoo and Gardens
(official new name for the zoo)
where we assailed Bill’s Bank en
masse and in no time freed most of
it from the relentless weeds that
forever threaten to take it over.
Armed with trowels, knives and
other crude cutting devices our
members swarmed upward with
buckets and garbage bags in tow,
crawled between vireya, clambered
over rocks, pried here, cut there,
yanked, dug out and declared
victory over the invasive flora (at
JOHN’S NOTES
least for the moment) upon
reaching the summit. Down below
other members with lesser scaling
abilities tackled the species garden
and environs. In two hours time,
hot, sweaty and happy, we
gathered at the Zoo pavilion for a
brown bag lunch and cold drinks
for all! Self-congratulations were
in order and, as we discussed “the
extensiveness of the invasiveness”
it was overheard “man, did you see
that chick-weed” “ Just one of the
many talents of our president,”
came a reply!
The meeting itself was rather
brief with the plant auction and
truss giveaway conducted by
Jurahame Levya closing the
By John Barbour
festivities. Sherla announced that
due to a work schedule conflict
Rachel Levya would be
relinquishing her position as Vice
President. Ron Phillips has agreed
to take over the position.
Time has not permitted a
projected interview with Dorothy
Walker, our current treasurer, but
will hopefully appear in our next
newsletter. Dorothy is Rachel’s
mother, ergo Jurahame’s
grandmother. Stay tuned as we
explore the story behind this
dynasty within our midst! Viva
Vireya!
Here’s pix of the huge blooming
Great Scent-sation & Humbolata
Bay. Great Scent-sation had 48 buds
before I picked some off to give
others room. I’ve never had
blooming like this – and at the same
time! Wish I knew how it happened,
with my more-than-casual gardening
habits.
For some reason this year has been “the” year for vireya blooms. They have not only come earlier than
normal but the number of blooms has been outrageous. They cover the shrub and they are coming
right back into a second and third bloom with little rest in between. Does it have to do with the 6
months of rain Maturity of our plants Or Whatever the reason… Viva Vireya!!!!
