Greetings from Dunlouise Angus in COTLAND By: Geordie Soutar, Dunlouise Angus 2009 has proven to be a challenging year for Angus breeders all around the world, and I’m sure 2010 will present some fresh hurdles! In spite of a drop in grain prices, I am totally convinced the native cattle, from here in the county of Angus, will continue to play an ever increasing role in the ongoing drive for efficient cattle. In common with our Angus brethren around the world, our goal is to improve Angus cattle; this starts with a live, easily calved animal – back to basics – the calf has the rest of its life to grow! From my travels in the USA I am aware how hard cows have to work every day of their lives, and of the American cowman’s high level of stockmanship, which is second to none. Here at Dunlouise we concentrate on the attributes which gained the Angus worldwide fame. Our cattle have to be very functional, living on a fairly minimalistic diet in winter and grass in the summer; they retain condition all year round. We do not creep feed calves as we feel it impacts semen quality and milking ability. The native cattle tend to be very structurally correct moving well with good feet, good spring of rib and body depth. We have not followed the trend to make Angus into black continentals; we do not subscribe to the European grading system which is based on conformation and red meat yield, with double muscling being common. We believe marbling and meat quality should be taken into consideration. In the UK all cattle must bear the initial of the foundation cow of that family, hence Dunlouise Edinburgh stems from the famous Erica family. He is sired by Jumor Eric of Abernyte, as is Dunlouise Jipsey Jaguar. Cortachy Boy and Commander Bond are from the Cherry Blossom family. We at Dunlouise are proud to be the only herd in the world with all the remaining native families in existence (with no imported bloodlines). We think it is fitting the genetic blueprint of the Angus breed is still here in the county of Angus, where it all began. I look forward to continuing our journey with Genex by introducing the remaining three families to the US, which are Nell of Aldbar, Miss Burgess and Pride of Aberdeen.
