THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE When it comes to the student experience, what happens outside the classroom is just as important as what happens inside. WE ARE COMMITTEDTO ATTRACTING AND RETAINING STUDENTS who reflect our institutional values and the values of our campus community including the importance of respecting others and maintaining a positive relationship between students, faculty, staff, administration and the community. Student rights and responsibilities Our Student Rights and Responsibilities department is designed to protect the rights of everyone on campus and sustain an environment of inclusiveness that will empower you to achieve your highest potential. This is supported through the many initiatives offered by our Diversity office, which works hard to ensure we sustain a positive, multicultural campus. Office of Campus Safety The security of everyone on campus is a key priority at Durham College and our Office of Campus Safety has several strategies in place to ensure your safety including: • 24-hour security presence at the main desk of the Gordon Willey building at the Oshawa campus; • Campus Walk program, which provides escorts to and from your car on campus; • Closed-circuit television cameras located throughout campus; • Code blue stations in all parking lots that provide direct contact to security; and • Uniformed security personnel who routinely patrol the campus. Office of Campus Safety T: 905.721.2000 ext. 2948 www.durhamcollege.ca/campussafety Student Association (SA) The SA plays an active and important role in the interest and well-being of all students, reflecting the values of communication, inclusiveness, representation, spirit and success. It holds numerous on- and off-campus events including Campusfest and Winterfest as well as outdoor concerts and comedy nights at the on-campus pub and restaurant, E.P. Taylor’s. The SA is also responsible for a range of student services including: • Bike Depot; • Campus Emergency Response Team; • Food Centre; • Legal services; • LGBTQ Centre; • Perfect Pals; • Pride committee; • Sexual Health Resource Centre; • Students for Equal Access; • Student health insurance plan; • Tuck Shop; and • Women’s Centre. In addition, it supports and funds more than 70 student clubs focused on sports, culture and hobbies, giving you an opportunity to develop your leadership skills while socializing with others who share similar interests. SA T: 905.721.0457 www.your-sa.ca Women’s Centre The Women’s Centre offers a safe haven for female students including access to private and confidential counselling and assistance in abusive situations. It also hosts numerous events on campus including Break the Silence Day, an event protesting violence against women, and an annual memorial ceremony to mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. It entertains, educates and updates the campus community and surrounding region. Airing live from the Gordon Willey building at the Oshawa campus, the station broadcasts all Durham College home varsity games and reports on breaking news, weather conditions and more. E.P. Taylor’s Pub and Restaurant There are numerous ways to get involved on campus and make new friends and you won’t find a more perfect location to unwind with new classmates than E.P. Taylor’s Pub and Restaurant, one of the top campus pubs in Ontario. In addition to drinks and great food, E.P.
