The Dudson Fine China (DFC) and Finest Vitrified Hotelware
product backstamps (left and right, respectively) include
the European Union Food Safe logo, as well as the date
of manufacture, a Dudson tradition of clearly identifying
when the product was produced. The Finest Vitrified
Hotelware backstamp also includes the officially licensed
British Standards 4034 "kitemark" signifying compliance
with the strict requirements of the British Standards
office related to the water absorbtion allowed in a
glazed piece of ceramic ware. Only Dudson is presently
licensed to use this symbol for foodservice china products
and has proudly done so for the past 36 years.
Is it Food Safe
The new Food Safe Symbol, incorporated into both
Dudson backstamps, is part of a European Directive
begun back in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s with the
concern about the use of lead and cadmium in items
which come into contact with food, ceramics being
one of the first categories to come under scrutiny.
Although the Food Safe Symbol has been used before, the
original European Directive has now been revised to make
the use of this symbol, on relevant products, mandatory.
The use of a symbol is the first step to informing consumers
about what is safe for use with food, an on-going
requirement of the European Directive and of British
Standards. It is seen as a declaration by a manufacturer or
seller of their legal responsibility that the product which they
manufacture and/or sell is fit for use with food products.
This is just the start of a process which is designed to enable
the consumer to make an educated and informed decision.
