Welcome to PYP Learning in Action

Welcome to PYP Learning In Action!
Year 3 students and teachers have been enjoying discovering more about how
they can express themselves through their culture. Their central idea is:
Rituals, traditions and artifacts provide a window into the beliefs and values
of cultures.
This has been an inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express culture,
beliefs and values and connect with them, to express our individuality.
Chinese New Year was an excellent introduction for this unit of work, as the
colour, rituals and traditions associated came into clear focus during that
time.
We are uniquely situated here in HK to be able to explore a range of these
rituals and traditions and ask why they are important to us in expressing
ourselves. The similarities and differences between cultures have been a focal
point and knowing the purpose of rituals and traditions has built a deeper

understanding of our individuality, and created an open-minded and reflective
aspect to the learning. Along the way, students have developed their ideas
about beliefs and values.
Thinking mathematically has also focused on how we use numbers – through
addition, subtraction and multiplication. Students have been working in a
variety of groupings both in and out of the classroom to make discoveries
about rules and patterns using these concepts. As you will see from the
photos, sometimes this is in written work, games or oral tellings.
Year 3 are now moving onto their unit on the Human Body Systems, but
I am sure you will enjoy this showcase of their work on How we Express
Ourselves.
