Discussion
In many ways, <strong>the</strong> US and non-US born students responded <strong>the</strong> same
way when asked <strong>the</strong> same questions in many areas. For example, everyone
seemed to be almost as comfortable working by <strong>the</strong>mselves as in a group,
although certain individuals expressed a preference. (Many people agreed with
both questions 1 & 2 even though this would seem to be contradictory.) The
results <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> last question, regarding asking questions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> teacher also show
roughly <strong>the</strong> same percentages across <strong>the</strong> board. All groups said that Math and
Science were <strong>the</strong> most important areas <strong>of</strong> study, but since mine is a Science
class, this result might be somewhat skewed.
The areas in which <strong>the</strong>re were noticeable differences included questions
about respecting and showing respect for teachers, parents’ grade expectations,
and <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> high school. US-born students’ idea <strong>of</strong> high school is a place
to help <strong>the</strong>m get into college, whereas a higher percentage <strong>of</strong> non-US students
felt it was ei<strong>the</strong>r a place to gain knowledge or to help <strong>the</strong>m get a good job.
