HAVE YOUR CHILDREN READ TO YOU
Parents of children in grades 1-4 (especially children in grade 3)
should have their Third Grade child read to them for 20 minutes
every night.
A couple of years ago I listen some suggestions for you. At the request of
some parents (who said the suggestions helped the parents help the
children.), I happily list them again.
⇒ Talk about the story. Share your favorite part of the story, least favorite, and
things that puzzled you. Ask your child to share his or her thoughts.
⇒ Read lots and lots- So much comprehension skill comes through simple practice.
⇒ Ask questions. Tell your children at the beginning of the book that you will be doing this. Turn it into a fun
challenge. ”Let’s see how much you remember!”
⇒ Ask the child to narrate the story back to you in his or her own words. Compliment them when they include
a detail or show especial insight.
⇒ Try a sequencing activity. Let your child tell you the order in which happenings occurred.
⇒ Main Idea of what was read Have your child tell you the Main Idea of the reading.
Let’s all, Teachers and Parents, work together to help
God’s Gift to us — the CHILDREN!
