Typical System Configuration
Antenna and Rotator
The IFF antenna design complements the features and performance
capabilities of the interrogator’s transmitter and receiver. Sum and
Difference R.F. signal inputs provide antenna beam sharpening and
interrogation side lobe suppression for clutter reduction.
The antenna rotator is a weather-tight aluminum casting with stainless
steel hardware for harsh environments. The modular design allows for
rapid maintenance with minimum down time. A two speed motor
rotates the antenna providing data updates at either a 2 or 4 second
rate.
Interrogator
The Digital Interrogator transmits 2 KW minimum at 1030 ±0.2 MHz
and receives the transponder reply at 1090 ±0.5MHz. Four Selective
Identification Feature (SIF) modes are provided including Modes 1,2,3
and C interrogation pulse groups. Measurement of the round-trip time
determines the range to the replying target, while the boresight of the
interrogator antenna determines the azimuth direction. Typical range
accuracy is 378 feet with transponder delay time dominating overall
error.
IFF Processor
Digital data from the interrogator is transmitted to the IFF processor via
an Ethernet connection. The processor displays all targets detected by
the interrogator on a PPI scope over a map of the region and allows the
operator to select any target for radar acquisition. The acquisition data
is passed on in the proper format to the slave processor.
