Provenance Elizabeth Colp Chellis was a scholar and collector who was always ready to share knowledge, resources and advice. In a full life she married just once, had just one child, but assembled the largest library relating to Wedgwood in the world, and displayed a very good teaching collection of Wedgwood and related 18th century ceramics. She enjoyed a wide circle of friends. One wrote after her passing “...(her) contribution to my enjoyment and knowledge of Wedgwood will live well beyond our lifetimes.” Elizabeth once said that if she was to be in an organization—she would lead it—and indeed she was a founder in 1956, and later president, of the Wedgwood International Seminar, and the founder and president of The Wedgwood Society of Boston in 1969. Memberships included the Royal Society of Arts, the English Ceramic Circle, the Northern Ceramic Circle, the China Students of Boston, the Jones Museum of Glass and Ceramics, and the Wedgwood Societies of London, Australia, New York and Washington D.C. From the early 1930s, she was a tireless researcher as well as collector. She lectured and wrote enthusiastically and often, and helped introduce many others to ceramics studies and collecting. She was a mainstay of many organizations. As a young married woman, Elizabeth played piano and studied bookbinding but soon found and focused on two themes that engaged her interest the rest of her life—the lives and poetry of Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and the life and ceramics of Josiah Wedgwood. Elizabeth was one of the first to join The Wedgwood Club of Boston, founded by Jean Gorely of Wellesley about 1934 and continuing into early 1960s. Elizabeth soon began collecting and studying, and for many years was that Club’s Recording Secretary. Many early Wedgwood meetings were held in the historic Council Chamber of the Old State House in Boston. During and after WWII, Elizabeth—somewhat like Helene Hanff and her correspondence with Marks and Company at 84 Charing Cross Road—kept up a correspondence with David Lowe and other London booksellers, requesting a broad range of books and material relating to Wedgwood, his peers, and his innovations in design and production. Material flooded in, including source books, period letters and Wedgwood-related 18th century ephemera. She came close to replicating Josiah Wedgwood’s library, and identified many sources of his neoclassical designs. Now at The Birmingham Art Museum, Alabama, the Chellis Wedgwood Library was generally recognized to be the greatest collection in private hands of printed and manuscript material relating to Josiah Wedgwood and the potteries he founded. In Birmingham, a resource for scholars, it complements the Beeson Wedgwood Collection, the largest and finest collection of Wedgwood ceramics in this country. The Boston Browning Society was founded in 1885, while Robert Browning was still alive, and Elizabeth served as librarian, and their first woman president. She was a member or supporter of groups including the Armstrong Browning Library, the Fan Guild, the American Bell Society, the College Club of Boston, the Thoreau Society, two chapters of the DAR, the Wellesley Historical Society, the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church, and her Carleton and Wellesley College Alumni groups. She was on the Visiting Committee for European Decorative Arts at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts. In 1985, Carleton College awarded her their Distinguished Achievement Award for her contributions to the arts.
