BA (Hons) Film Production
at UCA Farnham 3 or 4 * years full-time
BA (Hons) Film Production at UCA Farnham
is one of the longest established film
courses in the country. We emphasise craft
skills and critical thinking and combine
traditional 16mm craft skills with state of the
art digital facilities.
The course seeks to provide a challenging
educational experience and emphasises
critical understanding, creative practice and
collaborative working. You are encouraged
to challenge your preconceptions, work
imaginatively and be curious about the world
you aim to represent.
The film facilities have recently been upgraded
and refurbished to embrace new technologies.
Our specialist facilities include: 16mm and
S16mm cameras and lighting, HD cameras
and hard disc sound recorders, Avid Media
Composer, Final Cut Pro and Symphony Nitrus
suites and steenbecks, and fully equipped film
studio and cinema.
We are accredited by the BKSTS and
have two annual British Cinematography
Scholarship Trust awards. We are members
of NAHEMI and have close links with
the Royal Television Society, BECTU, the
Documentary Filmmakers Group, the School
of Sound, ArriMedia, Panalux, Soho Film
and Cirro Lite. Educational partnerships exist
with Avid and Kodak.
The course embraces all areas of film
production from documentary and fiction to
artist’s filmmaking and critical writing.
* Our 4 year course includes a preparatory
year (year 0) which provides a focused
introduction to film production.
Careers
Our graduates work in feature films, postproduction
houses, music video production,
advertising production, facilities houses,
distribution companies and television.
Companies students are involved with
include; Ridley Scott Associates, BBC,
Tiger Aspect, Working Title, Focus Features,
IMG, Pinewood Studios, Ascent Media,
Boomerang, Rushes and Soho Images.
Our graduates often go on to further study
at the National Film and Television School
and the Royal College of Art.
Student successes
Our student’s films are screened at film
festivals nationally and internationally.
These include the Hamburg, Drama
International (Greece), Exposures, Sheffield
International Documentary, End of the
Pier International, Kurzfilmsalon, Poitiers,
Manhattan Iranian, United Nations
Association and Amnesty International film
festivals.
Recent awards include:
Judges’s commendation for Just Waiting
at the Imperial War Museum student video
festival.
Exposures Student Film Festival in
Manchester: Hide by James Easter was
awarded Best Drama and Made Backwards
by Dean Walton won the Corona Extra
Audience Award.
Small Talk by Orfeas Peretzis was awarded
Best Short Digital Film as part of Digi2007 at the
Drama International Film Festival in Greece.
Street Dog by Hamy Ramezan was awarded
Best Film at the Manhattan festival of Iranian
films and he has now been awarded funding
for his next film by the Finnish government.
A first year student, Joe Martin was awarded
£1,000 to make a short film under the Media
Box scheme and has gone on to win €7,000
to make a film from the European League
of Institutes for the Arts for the Prix Europa,
made over the summer and involving
students from all years of the course,
including recent graduates.
Island to Isla, a film about a Scottish
island postman who rows to the mainland
every day to collect letters, won the
Kodak/NAHEMI award at the Encounters
film festival in Bristol for the best
cinematography in a student film, with
cinematography by Billy Campbell and
direction by Jem Gerrard.
Hero by Kirnay Bhatt won Best Live Action
Award at the Exposures Film Festival in
Manchester.
