<strong>BA</strong> (<strong>Hons</strong>) <strong>Film</strong> <strong>Production</strong><br />

at UCA Farnham 3 or 4 * years full-time<br />

<strong>BA</strong> (<strong>Hons</strong>) <strong>Film</strong> <strong>Production</strong> at UCA Farnham<br />

is one of <strong>the</strong> longest established film<br />

courses in <strong>the</strong> country. We emphasise craft<br />

skills and critical thinking and combine<br />

traditional 16mm craft skills with state of <strong>the</strong><br />

art digital facilities.<br />

The course seeks to provide a challenging<br />

educational experience and emphasises<br />

critical understanding, creative practice and<br />

collaborative working. You are encouraged<br />

to challenge your preconceptions, work<br />

imaginatively and be curious about <strong>the</strong> world<br />

you aim to represent.<br />

The film facilities have recently been upgraded<br />

and refurbished to embrace new technologies.<br />

Our specialist facilities include: 16mm and<br />

S16mm cameras and lighting, HD cameras<br />

and hard disc sound recorders, Avid Media<br />

Composer, Final Cut Pro and Symphony Nitrus<br />

suites and steenbecks, and fully equipped film<br />

studio and cinema.<br />

We are accredited by <strong>the</strong> BKSTS and<br />

have two annual British Cinematography<br />

Scholarship Trust awards. We are members<br />

of NAHEMI and have close links with<br />

<strong>the</strong> Royal Television Society, BECTU, <strong>the</strong><br />

Documentary <strong>Film</strong>makers Group, <strong>the</strong> School<br />

of Sound, ArriMedia, Panalux, Soho <strong>Film</strong><br />

and Cirro Lite. Educational partnerships exist<br />

with Avid and Kodak.<br />

The course embraces all areas of film<br />

production from documentary and fiction to<br />

artist’s filmmaking and critical writing.<br />

* Our 4 year course includes a preparatory<br />

year (year 0) which provides a focused<br />

introduction to film production.<br />

Careers<br />

Our graduates work in feature films, postproduction<br />

houses, music video production,<br />

advertising production, facilities houses,<br />

distribution companies and television.<br />

Companies students are involved with<br />

include; Ridley Scott Associates, BBC,<br />

Tiger Aspect, Working Title, Focus Features,<br />

IMG, Pinewood Studios, Ascent Media,<br />

Boomerang, Rushes and Soho Images.<br />

Our graduates often go on to fur<strong>the</strong>r study<br />

at <strong>the</strong> National <strong>Film</strong> and Television School<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Royal College of Art.<br />

Student successes<br />

Our student’s films are screened at film<br />

festivals nationally and internationally.<br />

These include <strong>the</strong> Hamburg, Drama<br />

International (Greece), Exposures, Sheffield<br />

International Documentary, End of <strong>the</strong><br />

Pier International, Kurzfilmsalon, Poitiers,<br />

Manhattan Iranian, United Nations<br />

Association and Amnesty International film<br />

festivals.<br />

Recent awards include:<br />

Judges’s commendation <strong>for</strong> Just Waiting<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Imperial War Museum student video<br />

festival.<br />

Exposures Student <strong>Film</strong> Festival in<br />

Manchester: Hide by James Easter was<br />

awarded Best Drama and Made Backwards<br />

by Dean Walton won <strong>the</strong> Corona Extra<br />

Audience Award.<br />

Small Talk by Orfeas Peretzis was awarded<br />

Best Short Digital <strong>Film</strong> as part of Digi2007 at <strong>the</strong><br />

Drama International <strong>Film</strong> Festival in Greece.<br />

Street Dog by Hamy Ramezan was awarded<br />

Best <strong>Film</strong> at <strong>the</strong> Manhattan festival of Iranian<br />

films and he has now been awarded funding<br />

<strong>for</strong> his next film by <strong>the</strong> Finnish government.<br />

A first year student, Joe Martin was awarded<br />

£1,000 to make a short film under <strong>the</strong> Media<br />

Box scheme and has gone on to win €7,000<br />

to make a film from <strong>the</strong> European League<br />

of Institutes <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prix Europa,<br />

made over <strong>the</strong> summer and involving<br />

students from all years of <strong>the</strong> course,<br />

including recent graduates.<br />

Island to Isla, a film about a Scottish<br />

island postman who rows to <strong>the</strong> mainland<br />

every day to collect letters, won <strong>the</strong><br />

Kodak/NAHEMI award at <strong>the</strong> Encounters<br />

film festival in Bristol <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> best<br />

cinematography in a student film, with<br />

cinematography by Billy Campbell and<br />

direction by Jem Gerrard.<br />

Hero by Kirnay Bhatt won Best Live Action<br />

Award at <strong>the</strong> Exposures <strong>Film</strong> Festival in<br />

Manchester.<br />
