“National Championships hIStory”<br />
The <strong>Southeastern</strong> <strong>Conference</strong> won nine national<br />
championships in 2011-12: <strong>Football</strong> (Alabama),<br />
Men’s Basketball (Kentucky), Gymnastics<br />
(Alabama), Men’s Indoor Track and Field<br />
(Florida), Women’s Tennis (Florida), Women’s Golf<br />
(Alabama), Men’s Outdoor Track and Field (Florida),<br />
Women’s Outdoor Track and Field (LSU) and Softball<br />
(Alabama).<br />
The <strong>SEC</strong> has also had a national runner-up finish in<br />
seven sports, including: Women’s Swimming and Diving<br />
(Georgia), Men’s Indoor Track & Field (Arkansas),<br />
Gymnastics (Florida), <strong>Football</strong> (LSU), Men’s Outdoor<br />
Track and Field (LSU), Men’s Golf (Alabama) and<br />
Baseball (South Carolina).<br />
Here are some facts and figures about how the <strong>SEC</strong><br />
has fared in national championships during its 79-year<br />
history (pre-<strong>2012</strong> expansion):<br />
• The <strong>SEC</strong> became the first conference in history to<br />
win the national football championship (Florida),<br />
the national women’s basketball championship<br />
(Tennessee) and the national men’s basketball championship<br />
(Florida) in the same year (2006-07 academic<br />
year).<br />
• In its history, the <strong>SEC</strong> has won 196 national championships,<br />
114 men’s and 82 women’s titles. Since 2000,<br />

the <strong>SEC</strong> has won 80 national crowns, including 42<br />
men’s titles and 38 women’s titles.<br />
• The <strong>SEC</strong> has won at least one national championship<br />
in every sport it sponsors with the exception of volleyball.<br />
• The <strong>SEC</strong> has won six straight BCS National<br />
Championships and its eighth overall since 1998 –<br />
both national bests. The <strong>SEC</strong> has had five different<br />
teams – Alabama (2009-2011), Auburn (2010), Florida<br />
(2006-08), LSU (2003-07) and Tennessee (1998) win<br />
BCS national titles – more than any other conference.<br />
• In the “big three” men’s sports – football, basketball<br />
and baseball, the <strong>SEC</strong> has won 12 national championships<br />
during the last seven academic years. The<br />
league is the reigning national champions in football<br />
(Alabama) and basketball (Kentucky).<br />
• Since 2006, the <strong>SEC</strong> has had a national champion in<br />
12 of its 20 sponsored sports – football, men’s basketball,<br />
baseball, men’s indoor track and field, women’s<br />
swimming and diving, gymnastics, women’s tennis,<br />
men’s tennis, men’s swimming and diving, women’s<br />
golf, softball and women’s basketball.<br />
• Eight of the 12 <strong>SEC</strong> schools have won national championships<br />
in the 20 <strong>SEC</strong>-sponsored sports since Fall<br />
2006. They include: Alabama (football, gymnastics,<br />
women’s golf, softball), Auburn (football, men’s swimming<br />
and diving, women’s swimming and diving),<br />
Florida (men’s indoor track, men’s outdoor track,<br />
women’s tennis, women’s swimming and diving, football,<br />
men’s basketball), Georgia (gymnastics, men’s<br />
tennis), Kentucky (men’s basketball), LSU (baseball,<br />
football, women’s outdoor track and field), South<br />
Carolina (baseball), Tennessee (women’s basketball,<br />
women’s indoor track and field)<br />
• The <strong>SEC</strong> has now won 11 NCAA men’s basketball<br />
tournament titles with Kentucky claiming eight (1948,<br />
