PLEASE KEEP FOR YOUR RECORDS
Dear Parents or Guardians, Summer 2013
Enclosed you will find a Registration Form for any student who wishes to take Driver’s Ed for the summer. Please note that
a student must be 16 years of age and must have a Learner’s Permit prior to registering.
New York State mandates that each student complete 24 hours of classroom instruction training and 24 hours of in-car
training which consists of 6 hours of behind the wheel time and 18 hours of observation for a total of 48 hours. Therefore,
each student must complete 16, 90-minute driving sessions, and 16, 90-minute lecture sessions. THE PROGRAM RUNS
FOR 16 DAYS.
Due to these strict hour requirements, it is strongly recommended that you do not have your child sign up for Driver’s
Ed if it will interfere with any summer school activity, sport or personal vacation. There are no absences allowed for
summer Driver’s Ed.
Students who are disruptive, aggressive, or who create an unsafe driving situation, may be disciplined in accordance with the
school’s student discipline policy; such disciplinary action may result in removal from the program without a refund.
Upon successful completion of the course…all driving time completed; all classroom time completed; all written
assignments turned in at the time they are due; passing grade on all exams and Driver Education textbook returned…
your child will receive an MV-285 completion certificate. This certificate is proof to the DMV and your insurance company
that your child completed all the New York State requirements for operating a vehicle. MV285 certificates that are lost by
the students will require another original to be given, as DMV does not accept copies. In such case a $25.00 fee will be
charged for the replacement of the certificate.
In order to be part of the Summer Driver’s Ed program, the following material must be returned to my attention postmarked
no later than June 3, 2013.
1. Enclosed Registration Form (filled out and signed by both parent and student)
2. Photo copy of the student’s learner’s permit or junior license (ID Number and Address must be clear and legible).
3. Check or money order (made out to McGann-Mercy High School).
Please be aware that there are a limited number of spaces in the Driver’s Ed program. Students who return all the material
postmarked no later than the June 3rd deadline will be scheduled according to DATE OF BIRTH based on a first come,
first serve basis. Student handing in their registration material and payment after this date will be processed in the order in
which they are received regardless of date of birth or put on a waiting list if the class has filled up.
If you have any further questions please feel free to contact me at 727-5900 ext. 20.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Irene Corulla
Administrative Assistant to the Principal
& Driver’s Ed Coordinator
