Message from DATUK PATINGGI TAN SRI DR. GEORGE CHAN HONG NAM Chair of the Curtin Sarawak Council Dear graduates, I am very happy to share your joy and sense of achievement on the occasion of your graduation. Today, we have over 400 students graduating from various Curtin undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and I am proud that to date, we have produced over 2,000 high-calibre graduates since Curtin Sarawak was established in 1999. As Curtin University's largest international campus, Curtin Sarawak is committed to Curtin's aim to be an international leader shaping the future through its graduates and research, and to be positioned among the top 20 universities in Asia by 2020. We nurture innovative and creative minds who are job-ready and geared to better the future when they graduate. You should therefore all stand proud that you are graduating with the best Australian education and a fulfilling, life-changing learning experience! University students often take their university experience for granted, as just the step between secondary school and the real world, but having gone through the experience of a Curtin education, which I am sure you will agree is truly unique and world-class, I think you know better. Graduating from university is a great achievement and a profound time of change and possibility and, indeed, you should not take one bit of it for granted. You should thank everyone who has made this university what it is, and everyone who has supported you and your fellow students along the way. You have gotten a great education here which makes it far more than a step between secondary school and the real world, but rather a stepping stone to your future. Today, you have achieved another milestone in your academic careers. However, you might find it ironic that in each endeavor in your academic lives, you learn and grow and achieve the highest level possible in that institution and then you graduate. The next year, you are thrown back to being low man on the totem pole in your next institution, be it an educational or work institution. Even now, as you graduate and will soon start at entry-level jobs that will be the beginning of your careers, you will once again be on the bottom rung of the ladder. But this time, the opportunity exists for you to just keep climbing, like it is an endless ladder to heights you have never achieved before. I am sure that all of you are filled with great enthusiasm and eagerness to conquer what lies ahead, but I urge you to make sure that you are on the ladder you truly want to be on. Remember that it is YOUR LIFE. The famous psychologist and influential thinker Carl Jung said, “Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.” So, today I remind you all to look into your hearts and be awake before you agree to a dream that is not your own. Up to this point in many of your lives, most things have been decided for you. From now on, it is up to you to choose. I say, make a choice when you are fully awake, a choice that is informed by your heart and not by what others say or think or believe. Your contribution to the world will not be measured by the money you make or the accolades you receive, but rather by the way in which you share our unique gifts with the world. And the only place to find those gifts is within yourselves. Keep in mind also that, as you stand on the brink of moving into life beyond Curtin Sarawak, change will be inevitable! It is inevitable, and indeed gratifying, to see that you have matured and become skills proficient, ready to tackle and further your life-long education. I t is inevitable that structures and processes and relationships will change in your day-to-day lives. It is inevitable that you will face new challenges and it is inevitable that things may seem a little different in the year ahead. But as you look back today on your journey at Curtin Sarawak thus far - a journey that started out with hesitant, tentative steps, you will see just how far you have progressed. I hope it has been a journey imbued with wonderful memories, and I trust also a journey that will continue to leave an indelible legacy of excellence, achievement and a fine ethos and tradition in you for many years to come. I would also like to pay tribute to the wonderful lecturers of Curtin Sarawak, your parents, past students and the university management - you have all guided, molded and shaped the ladies and gentlemen who are graduating today. Your role has been hugely instrumental in moulding our youth...our hope for the future. Our future seems destined to be in capable hands. Suffice to say that I believe that the vast majority of you strove to work to your full potential, you aimed high, you set your goals and for the most part, you not only achieved them, but in fact surpassed them. Remember, as you face and tackle the inevitable changes of the future, hold true to yourself. Remember to hold onto your value system, your work ethic and most importantly, your humanity. It is these qualities that will guide you further on your journey. And, as you go out there into the world, I trust you will continue to be true ambassadors of this University and fulfill your role as a Curtin graduate. I trust you will show that you are not only technically or academically competent, but also possess emotional intelligence. Furthermore, you will demonstrate positive attributes like high integrity and a positive attitude, and adopt a continuous learning culture. As Curtin graduates, you are international citizens who are expected to use knowledge to better your chosen professions and the wider community; critical thinkers when it comes to problem solving, and abundantly creative when contributing ideas. You should also be truly knowledgeable about your professions, research smart and technologically savvy; and effective communicators, who are at the same time culturally sensitive and capable of dealing with people of all levels. Ultimately, you are a lifelong learner, treating each experience as an extension of your learning curve and a lesson in life. Your life is a remarkable occasion - I have no doubt that you will rise to it! So, go forth and make your unique contribution! 1. Message from PROFESSOR IAN KERR Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Greetings! This is not only a very special occasion for our new graduates - this historic graduating cohort of 2010 - but also a very important milestone for Curtin Sarawak and the many people here today who have contributed to its success. Today, we celebrate the 10th Graduation Ceremony for Curtin Sarawak with a cohort of over 400 graduating students. At Curtin Sarawak, we continually seek to equip our graduates with the Curtin graduate attributes, topmost of which is the ability to apply their knowledge, and the ability to be critical and creative thinkers, in solving practical problems and serving the larger community. In this modern day and age, especially with the incredible pace of technological advancement, you also need to be technology savvy and research smart, and commit yourselves to a lifetime of continual learning. Furthermore, in today's highly competitive and increasingly global working environment, you need every advantage you can get to advance and improve your marketability. You are thus required to be the best that you can be profession-wise, in addition to being international citizens in the truest sense of the word in tune with world developments and trends, able to communicate with people from East and West and at all levels, and moreover, culturally sensitive when interacting with others or managing subordinates. I am glad that many of our graduates who preceded you have applied these attributes to the fullest and have established themselves as major contributors to industry and community, in Malaysia and internationally. I am also very pleased that the University's mission to produce graduates of global calibre is in alignment with the aspirations of Malaysia, the State of Sarawak, and the local community, which include the development of skilled and educated human capital to support economic growth. Curtin Sarawak is a solid contributor to the social and economic development of Sarawak and the local community through community work, teaching and research. We are also fully committed to gearing our graduates and research towards the requirements of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy or SCORE. The degree you receive today should not be thought of as a reward, but rather an opportunity, a commitment, an obligation to go forward and continue the life-long process of learning. The knowledge and skills, and the graduate attributes, you have acquired at Curtin Sarawak should now be forged into what we call 'excellence'. May your graduation award always serve to remind you of your goals, and your abilities, and the very important role of education in your lives. Importantly, as you go forward in your lives, always live up to the Curtin values of integrity, respect, fairness, understanding, harmony and look ever forward. Your parents sent you to Curtin Sarawak not just because of our high standards and reputation for excellence and innovation, but because they value education and knew that if you are educated, there is no limit to what you can accomplish. So, graduates, just by being here today, you are giving your parents the best gift that they could ever receive and that is the gift of having earned a university degree, and a gift often described as “the gift that keeps on giving.” Each one of us is born with seeds of success. Our parents, our environment and schools and universities, like Curtin Sarawak, plant the seeds, till the soil, nurture and nourish each one of us until we develop into that special someone who can compete with anybody, anywhere, at any level. Never underestimate what you have gained at Curtin Sarawak. Getting a Curtin degree is a significant achievement; Curtin does not hand out degrees to people with limited potential. Be proud of what of you have achieved. And I can tell you this - wherever you want to go in life, you can get there eventually with your Curtin degree, but success does not come without a lot of determination and hard work, a small element of luck, and a bit of daring to stand out from the crowd. Therefore, I offer you a challenge; a challenge to do something remarkable, something more than the ordinary with your life. The Curtin degree you will receive today is just the beginning. By itself, it will not guarantee you success. You have to have a goal, a dream, and you must be persistent, remain determined with a laser-like focus on what you want. Only then will you attain success. You are our link to a new generation. You must reassess, re-examine and clarify your priorities and not just be satisfied with the status quo. Whether you go into research, business, engineering, public service or education, neither you nor society can continue to survive or prosper simply by implementing what is already known. Somebody is going to have to come up with meaningful new ideas, creative new approaches and important new discoveries. Why can't that somebody be you I want to remind you that the worth of any university is measured by the achievements and accomplishments of its graduates and the loyalty of its alumni.
