Watch for signs. www.FarrellAuctionService.com All traffic was stopped on April 9 at the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge at approximately 6:30 p.m. after an unidentified male parked his gold Toyota Camry, exited the drivers side door and walked around the front of the car, and jumped over the north jersey wall barrier, according Danielle Dillon, public information officer for the Solomon VRS/FD. The man was in his 40s or 50s and wearing a blue shirt and khaki pants. At least four eyewitnesses were present, according to a Calvert County Sheriff’s office press release. Witnesses reported seeing the man surface after jumping and attempt to swim before going under again, Dillon said. He did not resurface. Dillon could not confirm whether the man’s actions were suicidal. “I can’t say what was or not, it’s just our job to try and find him,” she said. At 10 p.m. that evening no remains had been recovered, according to U.S. Coast Guard St. Inigoes Station spokesperson Jonathan Lindberg. Calvert County Fire and Rescue, the Coast Guard and Maryland State Police were still on site at the time. The Coast Guard search efforts continued through 11:30 p.m. and covered nine square miles, Lindberg said. A “first light” search was unsuccessfully conducted by the USCG Station Baltimore. All search activities have been suspended until cause is found to resume the search, Lindberg said. The search included seven boats and two helicopters. Search crews went from the bridge to Sandy Point, Dillon said. A body would have drifted south from the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge with the current at the time of the incident. The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office ran point on the investigation into the identification of the jumper and finding next of kin while the U.S. Coast oversaw operations to locate remains, said Calvert County Sheriff Mike Evans. The sheriff’s office is treating the incident as an “apparent suicide/missing person” until further notice, Evans said. A possible victim identity was determined by investigators, but will not be released until positive identification can be made, according to the sheriff’s office press release. A corrections officer from St. Mary’s County witnessed the jump. Officers helped with traffic control, according to St. Mary’s Sheriff Tim Cameron. The last time an individual jumped from the Thomas Johnson Bridge was in 2007, as far as Cameron remembers. There have been several attempts in the past couple years, including an incident where a St. Mary’s officer pulled an individual back from the edge of the bridge, but he remembers no fatalities since 2007. Delegate Tony O’Donnell (R-29C) was an advocate for prevention measures on the Thomas Johnson Bridge in 2007, in conjunction with SPEAK. He said he discussed a call line for persons in crisis, similar to ones on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, and the crisis hotline signs currently installed on the side of the bridge. There is little that can stop an individual who is determined to jump, he said. “It’s a terrible tragedy for anyone in crisis,” O’Donnell said, adding he hopes to see designers of a future Thomas Johnson Bridge replacement “give consideration to minimizing easy access” to the edge of the bridge and potential jumping points. The Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department, St. Leonard Volunteer Fire Department, the Calvert County Dive Team, Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department, Benedict Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, the United States Coast Guard, the Calvert and St. Mary’s sheriffs offices and the Maryland State Police worked in tandem on efforts to recover the body. sarahmiller@countytimes.net Redistricting Board to Hold Initial Meeting The 2013 St. Mary’s County Redistricting Board will hold its first meeting on April 11, 2013 at 6:30 p.m., in the Commissioners meeting room inside the Chesapeake Building, 41770 Baldridge Street in Leonardtown.
