Lincoln is teaming with Film Life to<br />
present the American Black Film Festival<br />
for the seventh consecutive year.<br />
<strong>The</strong> annual event <strong>at</strong>tracts a robust<br />
group <strong>of</strong> film aficionados for a five-day<br />
retre<strong>at</strong> <strong>of</strong> premieres, networking, panel<br />
discussions, hands-on workshops and<br />
competitive film showcases. Dedic<strong>at</strong>ed<br />
to strengthening the independent<br />
black filmmaking community, the<br />
American Black Film Festival will celebr<strong>at</strong>e<br />

Aspiring filmmakers who enter the<br />
“Define Lincoln Luxury” contest must<br />
cre<strong>at</strong>e an original commercial articul<strong>at</strong>ing<br />
their own interpret<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> Lincoln<br />
luxury. <strong>The</strong> commercial should be 30 to<br />
60 seconds in length and must fe<strong>at</strong>ure <strong>at</strong><br />
least one shot <strong>of</strong> a Lincoln vehicle.<br />
Judging will be based on originality and<br />
cre<strong>at</strong>ivity, appropri<strong>at</strong>eness <strong>of</strong> commercial<br />
to theme and overall appeal.<br />

AGrand Prize winner will be selected<br />
on July 5, 2006, by a panel <strong>of</strong><br />

JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION<br />
Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan invites the public<br />
to the County’s 10th Annual Juneteenth Celebr<strong>at</strong>ion on Tuesday,<br />
June 13, <strong>at</strong> 7:00PM <strong>at</strong> the BlackRock Center for the Arts,<br />
12901 Town Commons Drive, Germantown.<br />
This year’s celebr<strong>at</strong>ion will include world renowned smooth jazz recording<br />
artist Marcus Johnson. Jazz ensembles from John F. Kennedy, James<br />
Hurbert Blake and Montgomery Blair high schools will also perform.<br />
Juneteenth was first celebr<strong>at</strong>ed on June 19, 1865, to mark the liber<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />
African American slaves in the U.S. by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863.<br />

Merrill Eisenhower Atw<strong>at</strong>er,<br />
23-year-old gre<strong>at</strong>-grandson <strong>of</strong><br />
President Dwight D. Eisenhower,<br />
this summer will follow in his famous<br />
ancestor’s footsteps and join a<br />
cross-country convoy consisting <strong>of</strong> military<br />
vehicles, trucks, RVs and other automobiles<br />
represent<strong>at</strong>ive <strong>of</strong> the interst<strong>at</strong>e’s<br />
importance as a symbol <strong>of</strong> freedom.<br />
<strong>The</strong> convoy will mark the 50th anniversary<br />
<strong>of</strong> the June 29, 1956 signing<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Dwight D. Eisenhower System<br />
<strong>of</strong> Interst<strong>at</strong>e and Defense Highways. It<br />
is a re-staging <strong>of</strong> then Col. Eisenhower’s<br />
military convoy th<strong>at</strong> traveled<br />
from Washington, D.C. to San Francisco<br />
in 1919. Th<strong>at</strong> trip averaged six<br />
miles per hour and proved the poor<br />
condition <strong>of</strong> America’s roads and our<br />
inability to mobilize in the case <strong>of</strong> a<br />

and christen the lead vehicle with a bottle<br />

Northern Virginia companies can now apply for the 2006 CARE (Companies As Responsive Employers) Awards<br />

50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE INTERSTATE SYSTEM<br />
<strong>The</strong> convoy will travel on Interst<strong>at</strong>e<br />
80 paralleling the Lincoln Highway—<br />
the route taken by the original convoy.<br />
Stops will be made <strong>at</strong> significant Eisenhower<br />
family sites such as the Eisenhower<br />
Library in Abilene, Kansas and<br />
the Eisenhower N<strong>at</strong>ional Historic Site in<br />
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, with a possible<br />
appearance by David Eisenhower.<br />
Stops will also be made <strong>at</strong> transport<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
landmarks such as the N<strong>at</strong>ional Automobile<br />
Museum in Reno, the I-80 Truck<br />
Stop and Trucking Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame in Walcott,<br />
Iowa, <strong>The</strong> N<strong>at</strong>ional Test Road in<br />
Ottawa, Illinois and the Studebaker Museum<br />
in South Bend, Indiana.<br />
<strong>The</strong> convoy will end by crossing<br />
the new Woodrow Wilson Bridge from<br />
Maryland to Virginia and finishing in<br />
D.C. <strong>The</strong> Woodrow Wilson Bridge is<br />
the largest transport<strong>at</strong>ion project under<br />
construction in the country. <strong>The</strong> original<br />
bridge was built during the Eisenhower<br />
administr<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

UNION STATION<br />
DDOT also marked the 50th anniversary<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Interst<strong>at</strong>e System with<br />
a special <strong>exhibition</strong> in the West Hall <strong>of</strong><br />
Union St<strong>at</strong>ion. <strong>The</strong> exhibit was titled<br />
“<strong>The</strong> Interst<strong>at</strong>e in the District <strong>of</strong> Columbia,”<br />
and was on display from<br />
April 24–May 6, 2006.<br />
<strong>The</strong> exhibit fe<strong>at</strong>ured historic and<br />
current photographs, maps and document<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
<strong>of</strong> the design and construction<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Interst<strong>at</strong>e Highway System<br />
in the District from the collections <strong>of</strong><br />
Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library,<br />
the Eisenhower Presidential Library,<br />
the N<strong>at</strong>ional Archives and the<br />
DDOT archives.<br />
N<strong>at</strong>ional and st<strong>at</strong>e-by-st<strong>at</strong>e activities<br />
are being held from coast to coast<br />
to celebr<strong>at</strong>e the 50th Anniversary <strong>of</strong><br />
the Interst<strong>at</strong>e Highway System.<br />
ALEXANDRIA PARK AND RECREATION<br />
COMMISSION HOSTS TWO<br />
PUBLIC PRESENTATIONS<br />
<strong>The</strong> Alexandria Park and Recre<strong>at</strong>ion Commission will host two public<br />
present<strong>at</strong>ions on Thursday, June 15, starting <strong>at</strong> 6:30pm <strong>at</strong> the<br />
George Washington Middle School’s auditorium, 1005 Mt. Vernon<br />
Ave. <strong>The</strong> first present<strong>at</strong>ion concerns synthetic infill turf <strong>at</strong>hletic fields. It will<br />
be followed by a present<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> inform<strong>at</strong>ion th<strong>at</strong> was g<strong>at</strong>hered by a consultant<br />
on the City <strong>of</strong> Alexandria’s draft Athletic Field Master Plan th<strong>at</strong> is currently<br />
underway.<br />
Following the two present<strong>at</strong>ions, the Park and Recre<strong>at</strong>ion Commission<br />
will hold a public hearing on <strong>at</strong>hletic field issues th<strong>at</strong> are rel<strong>at</strong>ed to the City’s<br />
draft Athletic Field Master Plan. <strong>The</strong> commission’s regular meeting will follow<br />
the public hearing. All interested residents are invited to <strong>at</strong>tend the present<strong>at</strong>ions,<br />
public hearing, and commission meeting.<br />
<strong>The</strong> synthetic field present<strong>at</strong>ion will provide inform<strong>at</strong>ion on the making<br />
and maintenance <strong>of</strong> synthetic infill turf <strong>at</strong>hletic surfaces. Fe<strong>at</strong>ured speakers<br />
include James Brosnan, a Ph.D. candid<strong>at</strong>e <strong>at</strong> Penn St<strong>at</strong>e University who is<br />
recognized for his expertise in synthetic infill turf systems, and Robin<br />
Leonard <strong>of</strong> the Arlington County Department <strong>of</strong> Parks, Recre<strong>at</strong>ion and Cultural<br />
Resources, Sports Division, who will discuss Arlington’s experience<br />
with synthetic infill turf <strong>at</strong>hletic fields.<br />
<strong>The</strong> public hearing will g<strong>at</strong>her public input on the draft Athletic Field<br />
Master Plan th<strong>at</strong> is currently under development. <strong>The</strong> plan addresses programming,<br />
maintenance standards, field needs, and proposed solutions to improve<br />
field conditions on the City’s <strong>at</strong>hletic fields.<br />
