Havering Languages Awards 2010 Four St Edward’s students received awards for Languages from Councillor Andrew Curtin and the Deputy Mayor of Havering at a ceremony held at Hall Mead School. The Mike Bristow awards for languages, held by the Havering Twinning association and Havering’s Language Colleges was set up to recognise and reward students’ achievement in languages ranging from French, German and Spanish to Russian, Italian and Chinese. Hannah Sterry won the year 9 award, Laura Bridger received the award for year 7 and Lucy Vialls was the winner of the Graham Barrable Chinese award 2010. May 2010 The overall ‘Havering Young Linguist of the Year’ who received the Manny Goldstein cup was St Edward’s 6 th form student Rebecca Swan. Linguist of the year Sports Relief 2010 Sponsored Swim Sport Relief Report by Tom Fosbrook 11.6 For Sports relief PeterAmey 11.6, Joe Sterry 11.2 and I did a sponsored swim in sports kit. Joe wore a rowing kit, Peter wore a tennis kit and I wore rugby clothes. We swam for the duration of lunch (60 minutes) and had no training which didn’t help because we can’t swim! We struggled through and in the end our huge bulging muscles got us to the end and we raised £200. LEAP FROG - Sports Relief Report by Chester Garnish 11.6, Sam Saunders 11.4 & Martyn Veskutonis 11.4. On Friday 19 th March, Chester Garnish, Sam Saunders and Martyn Veskutonis leapfrogged a mile around Westlands, over each other, wearing our customised 1-1-8 costumes in an attempt to raise money for sports relief. This year the money that was raised went to those who live unimaginably tough lives in countries such as Kenya, India, Brazil, South Africa, and projects within the UK. After some lunchtime training and some calculations made by the Leapfrog crew team we aimed to leapfrog the mile in less than twenty minutes. The mile was very hard, and meant we put a lot of effort into training and being physically ready for the task. Much to the surprise of our team and peers we completed the mile in the time of 14 minutes and 15 seconds! Overall, we raised around £400 between us, towards a great cause and had a good time doing it. Members from the World Challenge trip, Molly Hayworth, Emily Wainwright, Josh Dextor and Co. hosted and organized a 3 vs 3 Basketball Tournament for all boys in Year 7 - 13. The students managed to raise money for their trip and submitted a percentage to Sport Relief. Reachout Page 3 Election Fever Voting In the weeks leading up to the real 2010 General Election, St Edwards prepared itself for its own mock election also being held on the 6 th May. Students across Years 7-10 created their own political parties and manifestos standing on national and school issues. The main parties Tension was mounting! When the polling station opened at 8:15am on the 6 th May and the first flurry of voters began to appear. Throughout the day Years 7-13 voted in earnest with a final turnout of 39%. A Helping Hand 13 votes (2.5%) Democrat Juniors 39 votes (8.1%) Equaliserz 35 votes (7.2%) GAPP 78 votes (16.1%) Juice Boxx Committee 204 votes (42.1%) Keep Calm and Carry On 38 votes (7.9%) that campaigned were ‘A Helping Hand’, ‘Democrat Juniors’, ‘The Equaliserz’, ‘Go Away Politics Party’ (GAPP), ‘Juice Boxx Committee’, ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’, ‘Pride in Britain Party’ (PIB) and finally ‘Seven’s Party for Everyone’ (SPFE). Policies varied from Daleks being in the British army, to bouncy castles being compulsory in all schools, to an ice-cream van coming into school in the summer. In the last few days before the election, party political broadcasts were played across the school and the parties canvassed for support. Juice Boxx Committee led by Ben Asante from 10.1 came out the clear winners. A few of their key policies were for there to be a special school bus to Stratford, more school non-uniform days to raise money for the school and charities, more schools trips and the ice cream van in the summer! The Party has now met with Rev. Perry to discuss some of their ideas – so watch this space! PIB 28 votes (4.1%) SPFE 45 votes (9.3%) Sports Relief 2010 continued SKATES, HULA HOOPS & ROPES for Sport Relief by Molly Wilsher and Co. Members of 8.6 Molly Wilsher, Romarni Brytz, Sophie Bertrand- Dure, Madeleine Clifford and Arabella Quigley deicide to raise money for Sport Relief. We all came to school at 7.00am on Thursday 18 th March 2010 to do some sponsored activities like roller skating, skipping and hula hoping. We all managed to do the activities for a whopping 40 minutes and were all very tired after as we all tried our best into making the activities work. Molly, Romarni and Ms Campbell were roller skating around the sports hall whilst Arabella and Madeline were skipping and Sophie was hula hoping. After the event we were all proud of ourselves, but very tired as we pushed ourselves this far into raising the money for the charity. Romarni and Arabella also decided to take part in the Sainsbury’s 3 mile run within London. Romarni also manage to ride her bike to the Tower of London and back in aid of sports relief. She raised over £100 in doing this and we can add this to our grand total of £150. Also we sold hand made tee-shirts during break times and lunch times, we designed the shirts and most days after school we met up with a few other people and started on the shirts. We made between 15-25 shirts and we sold them for a minimum donation of £2 and raised £50. We are all so impressed with the amount of money we could donate to sports and hope that the charity can truly benefit from our donation. The sporting activities and the tee-shirt making turned out really well that we have all agreed that we could try and raise more money to donate to various different charities. On behalf of the girls I am saying a huge thank you to everyone who sponsored us and a massive thank you to the PE department into letting us raise the money.
