80 Bibliography – Gender in International Political Economy
The GARNET Network of Excellence
GARNET is a Network of Excellence on Global Governance, Regionalisation and Regulation: The Role of
the EU funded under the European Commission’s 6th Framework Programme comprising of 42 leading
research centres and universities. It is coordinated by the Centre for the Study of Globalisation and
Regionalisation at the University of Warwick.
GARNET’s aim is to develop a world-class multi-disciplinary network of scientific excellence, composed of
researchers, analysts and practitioners with expertise in key issues and themes in global and regional
governance. Particular focus is placed on: (i) those elements of the global regulatory framework (trade,
finance, security) that (to a greater or lesser extent) structure the modern world system and (ii) an
analysis of Europe’ role within that framework.
GARNET promotes the mainstreaming of gender issues and gender-sensitive approaches in the analysis of
Global Governance, Regionalisation and Regulation. This bibliography is part of the work of JERP 5.3.4
GIPE (see below) as well as a part of the activities within the scope of GARNET’s Gender Action Plan.
GIPE – Gender in International Political Economy
Objectives of GIPE within GARNET are:
‣ To critically analyse the International Political Economy approaches from a Gender and
International Political Economy perspective and suggest how we might address the coherence or
lack of coherence between the two frameworks.
‣ To develop methodologies which allow for a more systematic understanding of the impact global
restructuring has had, and is having, on gender relations in various regions of the world
‣ To analyse conceptually, theoretically and empirically the relationship between trade, finance
and social reproduction
‣ To craft policy relevant recommendations with respect to adopting gender-inclusive policies at
various levels of governance (especially the EU and the WTO)
‣ To produce a book on Gender in International Political Economy designed to use as an introductory
text for members of GARNET.
GIPE is co-ordinted by Prof. Brigitte Young, PhD from the Westfälische-Wilhelms University of Münster.
