President’s Column 

Hello All, 

Hopefully everyone is surviving this show season. 

We all should be encouraged by the number 

of cattle and exhibitors that are participating in 

our Lowline shows this season. Mostly the numbers 

are up at all the shows and even in this economic 

time of uncertainty, more and more new 

faces are appearing. 

While sitting here typing this letter to you all I’m 

reminded that there are only two shows left to 

attend - the NAILE and NWSS. By the time you 

have read this we will be down to the NWSS 

(National Western Stock Show). I hope many of 

you are planning on attending this year's NWSS – it is our National Lowline Show. 

You will be able to register on-line or with our office to attend the ALR Banquet, as 

well as being able to sponsor some awards at the National Show. This year at the 

ALR Banquet we are auctioning off “The Prime Pages” in the Lowline Ledger as 

well as having a fund-raising auction for our Junior ALR members. Those that are 

not attending the ALR Banquet in person will be able to participate via the Internet. 

Please keep an eye on our new website for more details about how to watch and bid. 

This year has flown by so fast! I am grateful for the opportunity that you have 

blessed me with serving for three years on the ALR Board. Thank you to everyone 

that has supported me this last year as your ALR President. I look forward to the 

years ahead for the Lowline breed and hope you will consider me to be a part of it 

again.

Top Ten List 

The 2010 National Western Stock Show will mark the 10th 

anniversary of our National Lowline Show and Sale. To help 

celebrate this milestone, I would like to highlight the top 10 

Lowline bulls that have influenced the breed during it’s first 

decade in the Americas. These bulls are listed by the number of 

progeny recorded, but they have all had a significant and positive 

influence on American Lowline cattle. 

#1: Brambletye Quartermaster Q117 (373 recorded progeny) 

Quartermaster was the 1998 Australian National Champion bull. 

Imported to the U.S., his semen was used extensively in fullblood 

and percentage programs. His offspring were of modest 

size but possessed excellent carcass yield and quality. Many offspring 

had commendable show careers and several daughters 

were used in ET programs. With excellent longevity, many 

daughters are still in production today. 

#2: Brambletye Tequila (261 recorded progeny) 

Tequila was the 2000 Australian National Champion Bull. He 

was imported to the US and sold for a record price of $22,500 in 

the first National sale. He has sired more national champions 

than any other Lowline bull including two national champion 

get of sires. His sons and daughters continue to produce national 

champions. His progeny excel in quality, correctness, extension 

and breed character. 

#3: Brambletye Transam (169 recorded progeny) 

Transam, by Athanlee Herman R007, was imported with his 

paternal half brother, Tequila. Used extensively, he produced 

many champions and added extra quality, muscle and length to 

his offspring. A daughter that sold in the 2005 national sale for 

$33,000 is still the record selling female of the breed. His progeny 

are still prominent today in many shows and sales and continue 

to be sought as elite herd building genetics. 

#4: Fairwyn’s Machine (158 recorded progeny) 

Machine, the 2003 National Champion is possibly the best know 

son of Tequila. He went on to sire many champions and solid 

working cattle. He was the first Lowline bull to be purchased and 

merchandised directly to the Angus and commercial industry 

#5: Brackengrae Beau Lad (142 recorded progeny) 

Beau Lad semen was imported in the “second wave” and was an 

instant hit. Being a moderate framed, very correct, high quality 

bull, he was used extensively and produced the 2002 National 

Champion bull and many show champions in subsequent years. 

His progeny are generally moderate framed with tremendous 

muscle and volume. 

#6: Brambletye Admiral J222 (136 recorded progeny) 

A most prolific bull, Admiral sired many of the first importations 

of embryos. His sons and daughters were above average in frame 

with deep bodies and fleshing ability. His pedigree was so prominent 

in the early years that some breeders shunned him, looking 

for “more unique” genetics. However, he possibly had the most 

positive influence on our breed of all the early foundation sires. 

#7: Eliza Park Brenton N001 (128 recorded progeny) 

Brenton was perhaps the largest framed Australian fullblood bull 

used in the U.S. He sired the first National Champion Lowline 

bull and was used in several herds searching for Lowline genetics 

to add frame and compete in the commercial industry. 

#8: TRA M206 Midshipman (124 progeny recorded) 

Midshipman semen was among the first imported to the U.S. 

He was the sire of Quartermaster and sired somewhat larger cattle 

than his Champion son, with excellent carcass composition. 

He was used extensively in producing F1 offspring that could 

work in the commercial industry and he appears in many fullblood 

and percentage pedigrees here in the U.S. 

#9: Nevada N060 (123 progeny recorded) 

Nevada was one of the first bulls originally selected in Australia 

for semen export to the U.S. He sired larger framed Lowline cattle 

with good size and substance. Many of his big volume, heavy 

weight daughters were used in ET programs. He sired two 

National Champion bulls and his sons and daughters appear on 

today’s most popular pedigrees. 

#10: Bar J Ponderosa 0K13 (104 progeny recorded) 

Sired by Nevada, Ponderosa was the 2002 Reserve National 

Champion bull. Weighing over 1,600 lbs at maturity, he sired 

many champions and his offspring have proven to be stellar producers. 

Ponderosa daughters produced the 2008 Grand and 

Reserve National Champion females and the 2009 National 

champion female.

I’m Janis Black, I own 2-J 

Livestock and live in Casper 

Wyoming. I have had 

Lowline Cattle since 2001 

when I purchased Winnie the 

Moo as a calf in the National 

Sale. I have shown Lowlines 

at the National Western and 

Kansas City American Royal, 

having champion cattle at 

both. I believe that the 

Lowline breed has a lot to 

offer to a wide range of people 

from commercial cattlemen 

to the small acreage owner. These cattle offer something to 

everyone being versatile, docile and hardy. I believe our job is to 

market our cattle to the individual market that fits our area, interests 

and abilities. 

I am an accountant and manage a very successful surgical office 

in Casper. I also do accounting, computer consulting and tax for 

businesses in Wyoming and Colorado. I am the Poultry 

Superintendent for the Wyoming State Fair, treasurer of the 4-H 

Junior Livestock Sale in Natrona County and a 4-H leader. I am 

on the board of directors for my local chapter of the American 

Society of Women Accountants. 

Although I have a diversified background, my true love is cattle 

and ranching. I have several full blood and percentage cattle. I 

have worked on the organizational committee for the Lowline 

Show at the National Western Stock Show for several years. 

This year I was fortunate to go to the Houston Livestock Show 

and Rodeo, allowing me to meet several people who don’t make 

it to Denver. Everywhere I go, people are concerned about marketing 

their cattle and how to help the Lowline breed grow. I 

think we need to have fair representation for all Lowline breeders 

in our organization looking for strategies and opportunities for 

everyone. We have to find ways to work together from sales to 

shows, always keeping in mind what is best for the growth and 

well being of the breed. I would like to represent all of you as a 

member of the board of directors.

course we as a breed have defined needs to stay true.

TODAYS YOUTH – TOMORROWS SUCCESS 

Lowline Members, 

We are very excited to announce the first American Lowline 

JUNIOR Association! We feel the future of the Lowline breed 

stands in our Youth’s hands. As president, I am honored and 

thrilled to be representing such a unique and brilliant breed such 

as the Lowlines. 

Our youth board members are eager to get the ball rolling on 

planning Junior Nationals for 2010. Our board consists of:

auction. This will be broadcasted on the internet so whoever can 

not make the banquet can still participate and support our 

juniors. Some of the items in the auction will be choice lots of 

percentage heifers/steers, semen lots, a custom designed felt 

cowboy hat, hand made quilt, and various other exciting items. If 

any member would like to donate an item to the auction or has

EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME . . . 

How about being a host family to one of our Australian Ambassadors Or, how about applying to be our American 

Ambassador We are looking for members that would be willing to serve as a host family for our Australian youth that 

visit every year during the NWSS. We would also like our junior members to be thinking ahead about applying for the 

ALR sponsored trip to Australia every year. 

If you’re thinking you could never be a host family I’d like you to reconsider. You don’t have to have a fancy house or a 

large herd of cattle to take in these kids. This may be the only time they ever make it to the United States and they are 

looking to see as much of it as possible. We not only need people that will be in Denver to show them around the stock 

show, we also need families from all over that would open their homes to these kids even for a short time. We can work 

out ways to get the kids to your home if you won’t be in Denver; we just need people willing to make the commitment of 

being a host family. A big Thank You to Jamie Tummons and her family for agreeing to be host family to Christina and 

Hayden who will be coming here in January. If you are interested in letting them help you out or show your animals in 

Denver please let me know. We are also looking for families for next year. I know it sounds early to be thinking about 

that but we start early making the travel arrangements for these kids and knowing where they are going to stay would 

help out in the planning stages. 

How about applying to be our U.S. Ambassador Kids between the ages of 18-21 are eligible for the ALR sponsored trip 

to Australia. While in Australia you will stay with various host families, attend and show at the Sydney Royal and see the 

beautiful land of Australia. Please check out the ALR website for more information about this trip and how to apply. 

I was lucky to serve as host family for Heidi Cory last January. We learned more than I could ever imagine about 

Australia, their cattle and their culture. It is something my family will cherish forever. I encourage all of you to give this 

some thought. You never know, you just might have an Experience of a Lifetime!

Lowline Logistics

Consultants’ mission is to 

help farmers and ranchers 

improve their land, their lives 

and their bottom line. In his monthly newsletter, Ranch 

Management Consultants’ Dave Pratt says: 

“Since 1970, input costs have risen 5 times faster than cattle 

prices. From that same time the price of oil has increased 8 times 

faster than cattle prices. These trends have resulted in more 

reliance on off farm income and a significant reduction in the 

number of family ranches in the past 10 years.” 

He talks about the “Agriculturally Insane.” He cites 

“Conventional Wisdom” as a leading source of security for most 

ranchers but also as a reason so many of them keep the same production 

practices and expect the results to finally come around 

next year. Here is what Dave has to say about the... 

AGRICULTURALLY INSANE 

“I was recently asked if it was possible to lower production costs 

and reduce the capital intensive nature of ranching. My answer 

Sure. There are examples all around the world. There are individuals 

scattered across the U.S. who have been doing it for years. 

They are usually pretty easy to recognize. They probably drive a 

Toyota into town instead of a dual-axle 1 ton. They understand 

why they shouldn’t borrow money when their banker thinks they 

should. They tend to have smaller cows than your other neighbors. 

Their neighbors think they’re nuts.” 

“If we take conventional wisdom as the definition of sanity, they 

are nuts. But conventional wisdom says that ranching isn’t profitable. 

Steven Covey defines insanity as doing the same things 

over and over and expecting different results. So, who’s more 

nuts, the rancher who does everything right (according to conventional 

wisdom) and expects things to come around, or the guy 

who’s doing everything “wrong” and making money” 

of these people depend on cattle for their livelihood. For many 

their cattle are more a hobby than a business. But profitability is 

not the driving motivation for many larger scale ranchers either.” 

Dave’s article is encouraging to Lowline breeders while also posing 

some challenges for us. We all know how easy Lowline cattle 

are to raise for smaller operations. Getting our message across to 

those “Conventional Wisdom” guys, who for the most part really 

don’t want to hear about it and are not that profit motivated is 

certainly a challenge. That the profitable cattle operations have 

“smaller cows than their neighbors” is a very promotable fact for 

the Lowline business. The 950,000 people (95% of the beef cowcalf 

producers) with less than 50 cows represent an enormous 

marketing opportunity if we can get our message across to those 

folks. Beyond that are the very large scale operations that could 

really benefit from the cost cutting, labor saving advantages of 

using Lowline bulls on first calf heifers while simultaneously 

bringing cow size down to lower inputs and improve maintenance 

cost efficiency. 

I recently loaned my neighbor a fullblood bull to breed his cows. 

This year, by his choice, he calved a little later than he normally 

would... mostly in May. Those May halfblood Lowline calves 

weighed an average of 498# the last week in October. Most were 

heifer calves, out of first calf heifers. One of the late April steer 

calves out of a 4-year-old cow weighed 576#. My neighbor was 

happy and made me a good deal to buy the calves. He will do 

some awesome word of mouth advertising locally for me and the 

Lowline breed! One small step to answer question number #3 but 

it is a start. 

Go to all of the local cattleman’s functions, feed store meetings, 

extension service seminars in your area and spread the good 

word about Lowlines and their cost cutting attributes. I think you 

will find a warmer reception this year when the entire nation is 

focusing on cutting costs in all of our operations. 

One cross with quality Lowline genetics will cut production costs 

quicker than with any other breed! 

There is a great big market out there for Lowline genetics.... let’s 

get after it! 

“Why then do so many ranchers adhere to conventional wisdom” 

“One reason we cling to conventional wisdom is that the US livestock 

industry is not a for-profit industry. Of the approximately 1 

million people who own beef cattle, 950,000 own fewer than 50 

cows. They produce nearly 40% of the nation’s beef but very few

New Registration/DNA Procedures Are in Effect 

As was reported in the Fall issue, the procedures for DNA parent 

verification and registration have changed as of November 1. 

These changes were necessary to a) keep up with an everincreasing 

volume of registrations as the ALR grows, and b) 

make it possible to submit registrations, especially fullbloods, 

online via the new web site. Here is an overview intended to 

help everyone adapt to the new routine. 

Members will now work directly with MMI to parent-verify their 

fullblood animals using DNA. This also provides the opportunity 

to request other optional tests from the same sample and some 

cost savings can be gained by ìbundlingî these tests. 

To order DNA supplies, call 800-311-8808, ext. 3016, or go to 

www.BreedTru.com. It is recommended that members always 

keep DNA supplies on hand. If the supplies are available, it 

might be convenient to collect a DNA sample while the animal is 

already caught up for another reason and not have to work them 

again just to collect DNA. The BEST sample is a small amount 

of blood on a Microcard. Hair and semen samples are accepted 

but with a surcharge of $7 per sample. In the case of twins a hair 

sample will be necessary. 

DNA samples should be sent to MMI Genomics along with a 

sample submission form. It is important to fill out the sample 

submission form completely, including tattoo, date of birth, registration 

numbers of sire and dam, etc. Keep in mind that the 

information on the DNA report will have to match up with the 

registration application later. On the sample submission form 

you also need to indicate how you want to receive your results 

from MMI. If you want to later register this animal via the ALR 

web site, you should request emailed results. You will then be 

able to upload the DNA report when you enter the registrations. 

You can also indicate that you want the ALR to receive a copy of 

your DNA report. Any reports that are received will be saved as 

an electronic “backup” copy. However you are still responsible 

for submitting the DNA report along with your registration application. 

If your DNA report(s) show qualification to the sire and dam as 

individuals and also the mating combination, you are all set to 

proceed with registration. If not, you will need to double-check 

your herd records and contact MMI to resolve the issue and 

achieve parent verification. 

If your registrations are for percentage cattle requiring no additional 

documents, or for fullbloods that only require a DNA

A.I/breeding certificates, embryo recovery sheets, etc. will be 

required, the registrations should still be submitted on paper and 

ALL the required documents should be enclosed with the application(s), 

a completed self billing worksheet and payment. 

As of this writing, the ALR has 697 members. It is no longer 

feasible to try and match up pending applications with other documents 

that have come in from different sources and/or at different 

times. Our current volume of incoming work mandates handling 

each batch of work only once, not several times over. 

Registrations should be submitted with all necessary documents 

so that they can be completely processed when they are started. 

Work not qualified for processing will be returned. 

If you follow the current procedure, you should receive reliable 

and prompt service on your registrations and other services. If 

work is submitted without payment, documents required by the 

Rules, signatures, etc., you will not only delay your own service 

but also the service that other members receive. 

Once you have reviewed the registration forms, instructions and 

Rules for registration, please don’t hesitate to contact the office 

for assistance if you still have a question. Answering specific 

questions is one of the things we can do best. Questions that are 

too broad or vague are almost impossible to answer correctly 

because there are so many “IF’s” and unknown variables. 

Before submitting your work, please give it a once-over and 

make sure everything is signed and dated and that all required 

information is filled in. And, that any documents required by the 

Rules are enclosed. If you have a deadline coming up, such as a 

show entry, please use the “special instructions” to indicate this. 

Following the new procedures and double-checking that your 

work is actually ready to process before submitting it will contribute 

to better service and quicker processing for everyone. 

In the case of percentage/purebred bulls that are to be used as 

sires, or purebred/percentage cows who are flushed for embryos, 

their DNA profile simply needs to be put on file. This is so their 

progeny could later be verified back to them if necessary. They 

themselves are not required to be parent verified. Submit the 

sample, obtain the report and send a copy to the office with a 

note telling us why it was sent. Later, when you have calves to 

register, they should sail right through.

Lowline cattle will be the feature breed for the 2010 Sydney Royal Easter Show with breeders from all over Australia (and some from 

New Zealand) converging to put together the finest line-up of Lowline cattle Australia has ever seen. The Sydney Royal is a 186- 

year-old Australian agricultural tradition and is Australia’s largest annual event. Seen as the iconic showcase of Australian culture and 

heritage, the show aims to recognize achievements in agriculture through competition whilst honoring our agricultural heritage. 

Lowlines were first exhibited at Sydney Royal in 1996, and it is a very great honour for them to be given this recognition amongst all 

cattle breeds in Australia only 13 years later. At the Sydney Royal, around 15,000 competitors showcase the very best in livestock, 

art, food and produce, all vying for the prestigious Sydney Royal Blue Ribbon. 

This Australian cultural event attracts between 900,000 and 1,000,000 visitors annually, making it the largest event in Australia and 

sixth largest agricultural event in the world drawing visitors from all over Australia and the world. 

From Tuesday 6th April until Wednesday 14th April, Australian Lowlines will be on display, judged and organizers will be offering a 

range of novelty activities, informative seminars and networking opportunities. If you’ve ever wanted to speak with a Lowline expert, 

Sydney Royal 2010 will be an amazing opportunity to do so! 

Some of the highlights of the program include calf capers (where calves and their handlers dress up in novelty costumes – a little bit 

like trick-or-treating with calves) and the Australian Lowline Tattoo (a once in a lifetime event, a Lowline-only parade in the centre of 

the main arena). Numerous informative sessions will also be conducted during as well as formal and informal social gatherings so 

Lowline enthusiasts from all over the globe can meet with one another. 

It is hoped that many of our fellow American Lowline breeders will be able to make the voyage Down Under to be a part of this historic 

and fun-filled event. See you in Sydney, April 2010.

Advertising is probably one of the most important aspects of any business, but in a cattle business, it is 

one of the hardest to allot money towards with all the other expenses one has. With this in mind, the ALR 

board has decided to hold the first auction to feature the “prime pages” in the Lowline Ledger for the 

upcoming 2010 year. By purchasing one or more of these pages (there are seven in all), the advertiser is 

guaranteed a prime spot for their advertising message in all four Lowline Ledger’s to be published in 2010 

(Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter) 

We think this will create fun and excitement at the banquet and at the same time raise some always 

appreciated money for the youth program, as 25% of the monies raised will be donated to the youth program. 

The winners of these pages will also receive a 15% discount off the prepaid prices for the pages purchased, 

resulting in a cost per full color page ad price of $368. The winning bidder on any of the pages 

sold, with his or her purchase, will be agreeing to run a full page color ad for the four 2010 issues of the 

ALR journal. Winning bidder may not re-sell or “lease” their location to another advertiser.

to the ALR. Persons making winning bids in person will settle with the ALR that evening following the

American Royal BBQ & Kids Q 

The American Royal BBQ Contest is the kickoff for the 

American Royal Livestock Show & Rodeo. This BBQ contest is 

one of the largest in the world. This year’s BBQ consisted of 

approximately 700 teams, this included the Open and Invitational 

competitions. Three continents were represented this year. In 

addition to the adult competition, there is also a Kids Q. This is a 

competition in which 50 kids in two age groups compete. The 

younger kids cook hamburgers and the older kids cook steaks. 

The Midwest Lowline Association stepped up to the plate donated 

both the hamburger and ribeyes to be used in the Kids Q. 

The organizers and judges of the Kids Q were very pleased with 

the consistency and quality of the meat donated by MLA. Since 

the meat was from one source, it leveled the playing field for the 

kids and the judges could judge primarily on the competitor’s 

ability. 

The MLA was invited to have 

a booth in the Expo center. 

We were able to cook and 

hand out samples to those 

attending the event. Not only 

did this allow us to promote 

the beef, it also provided us 

with a great opportunity to 

promote the Lowline breed. 

Over 60,000 people attended the three-day event; the expo hall 

was overflowing. We had a great response from not only the public 

attending the event, but also the other vendors in the expo 

hall. What a great marketing opportunity! We were even interviewed 

by Mark Farris of BBQ-TV!

As part of this event, MLA provided Lowline briskets to a BBQ 

team in the Open division. The animals used were qualified for 

the contest, to ensure tenderness and 

marbling using ultrasound technology. 

The team was Mad Hogs and an 

Englishman. Barb Franks, Charlie 

Franks and Jim were great to work with 

and cooked up a brisket for us to hand 

out with our other samples at the expo 

center. The comments on the flavor and 

tenderness of the samples were outstanding. 

Many of the teams nationally and internationally are representatives 

for restaurants. Not only are they competing for the $25,000 

grand prize, but the name, recognition and prestige of winning or 

placing in the top 10 at a world famous BBQ contest is a great 

promotion for their business. Just like in the cattle industry, finding 

the edge is very important. Contestants in the BBQ contest 

are always looking for an edge, such as a finer texture, tenderness, 

marbling etc. Some of the competitors who sampled the 

Lowline beef feel this is what the Lowline breed can offer. 

After the American Royal, a high-placing, well known team 

wanted to try a Lowline brisket for a competition in Illinois. A 

brisket from a grass fed, natural 1/2 blood Lowline steer that had 

been ultra-sounded for tenderness, marbling, etc. was provided. 

The response was outstanding, the team placed 8th overall and in 

the brisket category received all high marks. Doc, who is the 

head cook for the team stated, “I believe this is the best brisket I 

have ever cooked. It was more like a filet mignon and my teammates 

as well as some of my close competitors were convinced I 

had cooked a filet mignon not a brisket.” He was very impressed 

with the tenderness, marbling and the natural beef flavor. 

We want to congratulate the team, Que’s Your Daddy, for their 

success, and thank them for their feed back and for handing out 

information on the Lowline breed. Thank you to the Mad Hogs 

and an Englishman on their success and for using Lowline beef 

and for their feedback. 

Thank you to: Karla Kovac for this marketing idea, her time, 

effort putting everything together and for helping to make this 

event a success. To Dick Miller, a Lowline breeder in Colorado, 

for providing the high marbling and tender Lowline-cross steers 

that supplied the briskets for the competitions.

Regional Association News 

Midwest Lowline Association 

We are growing! With the addition of states the MLA is growing daily. During 

the American Royal we obtained more new members and were able to hold a 

physical meeting where we were addressed by the CEO of the American Royal, 

Mr. Jim McNair. Mr. McNair acknowledged our hard work in getting entries to 

increase in the American Royal Show and also commented on the MLA involvement 

with the American Royal Kids Q. All our efforts have been received with 

open arms since the American Royal is a non-profit organization geared towards 

the involvement of young adults in agriculture. Unlike other venues this show is 

an 11-week event starting in September and ending in November. Plans for next 

year’s event have already begun starting with the BBQ and going through the 

Lowline Show. 

We need to express many thanks to Kathy and Tom Fredrickson who so graciously 

prepared our great buffet prior to the sale at the Royal. Many thanks also to the 

members that helped. All the teamwork paid off as everything went very smooth. 

Another thanks goes to Norbrook Pharmaceuticals (www.norbrookinc.com) as 

they stepped up and donated many premium gifts that were high dollar and very 

useful to those that won them. Thank you also goes out to Bomac Vets Plus 

Animal Health and Nutrition for their kind donation of Probios for premium gifts.

This year at the American Royal we had 70 entries and were acknowledged with 

great enthusiasm by our judge Mark Eberling. We hope to increase the number of 

entries again next year as this show is growing into a great event for us. 

As the year moves on the MLA is pulling together to work on other events to 

gain exposure for our breed throughout the Midwest. Mark your calendars for the 

Iowa State Fair and Nebraska State Fair in August 2010 and the American Royal 

at the end of October 2010. 


Mountain States Region 

The MSLA sponsored NILE show was a great success this year. We had a total of 

72 entries from California, Idaho, Washington, Wyoming, Nebraska and 

Montana. I want to thank all of you for coming and helping with the show. Look 

for the show results in the show section of this Lowline Ledger. 

On Friday night the group had a Q & A session with Rick Dodd, Trevor Smith 

and Brian Walters. They shared some of what the Board has been working to 

attain this year and heard member concerns. It was a very informative evening. 

Thanks to the ALR “Hot Dog Money” we also had snacks and refreshments. 

I would like to encourage anyone in the Mountain States region to join MSLA to 

work as a group to continue to promote this fine breed. If you need further information

Southwest Lowline Angus Breeders Association (SLABA) 

The Southwest Lowline Angus Breeders Association continues to grow in numbers 

as we strive to serve our members in the states of Arizona, Arkansas, 

California, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. 

SLABA sponsored the Open Lowline Show at the Houston Livestock Show and 

Rodeo in March. The results of that show were reported in the Ledger earlier this 

year. We will be sponsoring that show again in March of 2010 and also the Open

Lowline Show at the Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo in Austin, Texas immediately 

following the Houston show. We’re hoping that all exhibitors at the Houston 

show on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 will leave there and make the short drive to 

Austin for the Star of Texas Show checking in that same evening of the 16th with 

the show to be held on March 18. Two shows in a week – two for one! 

There is great excitement in the state of California as plans are being made to 

either show or exhibit Lowlines at the Cal Expo – the state fair of California in 

Sacramento. That will be in July and August of 2010. We are inviting all members 

of the ALR and SLABA in the surrounding states to participate in what we 

anticipate to be an annual event. Let’s get it up and going. Contact info@slaba.us 

as to how you can help with that. 

Two field days were held in the region in 2009. One was held at the Prime 

Lowline Angus annual ranch event in Hopland, California on April 18. SLABA 

director Jim Crawford and his wife Amy hosted the Field Day. Jim and Amy 

gave those who attended a first class tour of their ranch (which is maintained by 

sustainable practices). This was followed by a fantastic barbeque, and to top it off 

they provided a live band to entertain the guests! We’re all looking forward to 

this again next year. 

The second field day was held at the ranch of Larry and Kim Watkins in 

Groesbeck, Texas on September 25. Patti Seeley gave an excellent presentation 

of sustainable pasture practices, showing photos of how she had transformed 

some poorly performing pastures into productive, natural, multispecies grazing 

areas. We also were given a demonstration of show fitting using the Watkins’ 

fine bull, Peyton. Lunch – great Lowline burgers – was cooked and served by 

Mark Roesler. A question and suggestion session followed where the members 

expressed their opinions and concerns about the association and direction it 

should move. Out of those discussions a committee was later appointed consisting 

of Sandra Walker, Bob Bard, Tim Jackson, Patti Seeley and Jim Crawford to 

address the disposition of extra Lowline bulls and steers. The board of directors is 

considering the recommendations of the committee at this time.

Northwest Lowline Association 

2009 has been a busy year for the Northwest Lowline Association. We completed 

our biggest ever show ever at the Northwest Lowline Classic in Spokane in 

September with over 60 head from at least five states. A big thank you to the 

ALR Board members Brian Walters, Rick Dodd and Trevor Smith for coming to 

the 2009 Northwest Lowline Classic and keeping in touch with the NWLA. Jim 

Eldridge has taken over as our interim President after Gordon Lenhard resigned. 

Thanks Gordon for all your hard work. We appointed Beth Chudoba of 

Klammath Falls, Oregon to be our Vice President. 

We have increased our membership to over 40 members from Oregon, 

Washington, Idaho, California and Montana. We are looking forward to a great 

2010 and all the challenges that it will have. Our membership is working hard to 

expand the Lowline breed in the Northwest. We are currently planning a spring 

show at the Spring Washington State Fair in Puyallup in April. 

Some of our members also showed at the NILE in Billings Montana and will represent 

the NWLA in Denver in January. We are proud of all the hard work the 

NWLA and all of its members have put into making this a great year and a much 

improved association. We have some big goals set for 2010 including our 

Northwest Lowline Classic in September 2010 in Spokane and a possible sale to 

go along with it. This will be a great opportunity to see and possibly purchase 

some of the best genetics the ALR has to offer. We fully expect 2010 to be our 

best year.
