President’s Column<br />

Hello All,<br />

Hopefully everyone is surviving this show season.<br />

We all should be encouraged by the number<br />

of cattle and exhibitors that are participating in<br />

our Lowline shows this season. Mostly the numbers<br />

are up at all the shows and even in this economic<br />

time of uncertainty, more and more new<br />

faces are appearing.<br />

While sitting here typing this letter to you all I’m<br />

reminded that there are only two shows left to<br />

attend - the NAILE and NWSS. By the time you<br />

have read this we will be down to the NWSS<br />

(National Western <strong>St</strong>ock Show). I hope many of<br />

you are planning on attending this year's NWSS – it is our National Lowline Show.<br />

You will be able to register on-line or with our office to attend the ALR Banquet, as<br />

well as being able to sponsor some awards at the National Show. This year at the<br />

ALR Banquet we are auctioning off “The Prime Pages” in the Lowline Ledger as<br />

well as having a fund-raising auction for our Junior ALR members. Those that are<br />

not attending the ALR Banquet in person will be able to participate via the Internet.<br />

Please keep an eye on our new website for more details about how to watch and bid.<br />

This year has flown by so fast! I am grateful for the opportunity that you have<br />

blessed me with serving for three years on the ALR Board. Thank you to everyone<br />

that has supported me this last year as your ALR President. I look forward to the<br />

years ahead for the Lowline breed and hope you will consider me to be a part of it<br />

again.<br />

Top Ten List<br />

The 2010 National Western <strong>St</strong>ock Show will mark the 10th<br />

anniversary of our National Lowline Show and Sale. To help<br />

celebrate this milestone, I would like to highlight the top 10<br />

Lowline bulls that have influenced the breed during it’s first<br />

decade in the Americas. These bulls are listed by the number of<br />

progeny recorded, but they have all had a significant and positive<br />

influence on <strong>American</strong> Lowline cattle.<br />

#1: Brambletye Quartermaster Q117 (373 recorded progeny)<br />

Quartermaster was the 1998 Australian National Champion bull.<br />

Imported to the U.S., his semen was used extensively in fullblood<br />

and percentage programs. His offspring were of modest<br />

size but possessed excellent carcass yield and quality. Many offspring<br />

had commendable show careers and several daughters<br />

were used in ET programs. With excellent longevity, many<br />

daughters are still in production today.<br />

#2: Brambletye Tequila (261 recorded progeny)<br />

Tequila was the 2000 Australian National Champion Bull. He<br />

was imported to the US and sold for a record price of $22,500 in<br />

the first National sale. He has sired more national champions<br />

than any other Lowline bull including two national champion<br />

get of sires. His sons and daughters continue to produce national<br />

champions. His progeny excel in quality, correctness, extension<br />

and breed character.<br />

#3: Brambletye Transam (169 recorded progeny)<br />

Transam, by Athanlee Herman R007, was imported with his<br />

paternal half brother, Tequila. Used extensively, he produced<br />

many champions and added extra quality, muscle and length to<br />

his offspring. A daughter that sold in the 2005 national sale for<br />

$33,000 is still the record selling female of the breed. His progeny<br />

are still prominent today in many shows and sales and continue<br />

to be sought as elite herd building genetics.<br />

#4: Fairwyn’s Machine (158 recorded progeny)<br />

Machine, the 2003 National Champion is possibly the best know<br />

son of Tequila. He went on to sire many champions and solid<br />

working cattle. He was the first Lowline bull to be purchased and<br />

merchandised directly to the Angus and commercial industry<br />

#5: Brackengrae Beau Lad (142 recorded progeny)<br />

Beau Lad semen was imported in the “second wave” and was an<br />

instant hit. Being a moderate framed, very correct, high quality<br />

bull, he was used extensively and produced the 2002 National<br />

Champion bull and many show champions in subsequent years.<br />

His progeny are generally moderate framed with tremendous<br />

muscle and volume.<br />

#6: Brambletye Admiral J222 (136 recorded progeny)<br />

A most prolific bull, Admiral sired many of the first importations<br />

of embryos. His sons and daughters were above average in frame<br />

with deep bodies and fleshing ability. His pedigree was so prominent<br />

in the early years that some breeders shunned him, looking<br />

for “more unique” genetics. However, he possibly had the most<br />

positive influence on our breed of all the early foundation sires.<br />

#7: Eliza Park Brenton N001 (128 recorded progeny)<br />

Brenton was perhaps the largest framed Australian fullblood bull<br />

used in the U.S. He sired the first National Champion Lowline<br />

bull and was used in several herds searching for Lowline genetics<br />

to add frame and compete in the commercial industry.<br />

#8: TRA M206 Midshipman (124 progeny recorded)<br />

Midshipman semen was among the first imported to the U.S.<br />

He was the sire of Quartermaster and sired somewhat larger cattle<br />

than his Champion son, with excellent carcass composition.<br />

He was used extensively in producing F1 offspring that could<br />

work in the commercial industry and he appears in many fullblood<br />

and percentage pedigrees here in the U.S.<br />

#9: Nevada N060 (123 progeny recorded)<br />

Nevada was one of the first bulls originally selected in Australia<br />

for semen export to the U.S. He sired larger framed Lowline cattle<br />

with good size and substance. Many of his big volume, heavy<br />

weight daughters were used in ET programs. He sired two<br />

National Champion bulls and his sons and daughters appear on<br />

today’s most popular pedigrees.<br />

#10: Bar J Ponderosa 0K13 (104 progeny recorded)<br />

Sired by Nevada, Ponderosa was the 2002 Reserve National<br />

Champion bull. Weighing over 1,600 lbs at maturity, he sired<br />

many champions and his offspring have proven to be stellar producers.<br />

Ponderosa daughters produced the 2008 Grand and<br />

Reserve National Champion females and the 2009 National<br />

champion female.<br />

I’m Janis Black, I own 2-J<br />

Livestock and live in Casper<br />

Wyoming. I have had<br />

Lowline Cattle since 2001<br />

when I purchased Winnie the<br />

Moo as a calf in the National<br />

Sale. I have shown Lowlines<br />

at the National Western and<br />

<strong>Kansas</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>American</strong> Royal,<br />

having champion cattle at<br />

both. I believe that the<br />

Lowline breed has a lot to<br />

offer to a wide range of people<br />

from commercial cattlemen<br />

to the small acreage owner. These cattle offer something to<br />

everyone being versatile, docile and hardy. I believe our job is to<br />

market our cattle to the individual market that fits our area, interests<br />

and abilities.<br />

I am an accountant and manage a very successful surgical office<br />

in Casper. I also do accounting, computer consulting and tax for<br />

businesses in Wyoming and Colorado. I am the Poultry<br />

Superintendent for the Wyoming <strong>St</strong>ate Fair, treasurer of the 4-H<br />

Junior Livestock Sale in Natrona County and a 4-H leader. I am<br />

on the board of directors for my local chapter of the <strong>American</strong><br />

Society of Women Accountants.<br />

Although I have a diversified background, my true love is cattle<br />

and ranching. I have several full blood and percentage cattle. I<br />

have worked on the organizational committee for the Lowline<br />

Show at the National Western <strong>St</strong>ock Show for several years.<br />

This year I was fortunate to go to the Houston Livestock Show<br />

and Rodeo, allowing me to meet several people who don’t make<br />

it to Denver. Everywhere I go, people are concerned about marketing<br />

their cattle and how to help the Lowline breed grow. I<br />

think we need to have fair representation for all Lowline breeders<br />

in our organization looking for strategies and opportunities for<br />

everyone. We have to find ways to work together from sales to<br />

shows, always keeping in mind what is best for the growth and<br />

well being of the breed. I would like to represent all of you as a<br />

member of the board of directors.<br />

to serve on the ALR Board<br />

for my first term, there were a lot of concerns about the Board.<br />

The membership was looking for a change in what was being<br />

done back then. I believe that the change that was desired, has<br />

happened. I also believe there is more to be done. I have helped<br />

make the changes that were desired/required. Now I feel the<br />

course we as a breed have defined needs to stay true.<br />

I merely ask you the membership to vote for the person who best<br />

represents you and the Lowline Breed.<br />

Lowline Members,<br />

We are very excited to announce the first <strong>American</strong> Lowline<br />

JUNIOR Association! We feel the future of the Lowline breed<br />

stands in our Youth’s hands. As president, I am honored and<br />

thrilled to be representing such a unique and brilliant breed such<br />

as the Lowlines.<br />

Our youth board members are eager to get the ball rolling on<br />

planning Junior Nationals for 2010. Our board consists of:<br />

auction. This will be broadcasted on the internet so whoever can<br />

not make the banquet can still participate and support our<br />

juniors. Some of the items in the auction will be choice lots of<br />

percentage heifers/steers, semen lots, a custom designed felt<br />

cowboy hat, hand made quilt, and various other exciting items. If<br />

any member would like to donate an item to the auction or has<br />

any questions please feel free to contact myself, Jamie Tummons<br />

EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME . . .<br />

How about being a host family to one of our Australian Ambassadors Or, how about applying to be our <strong>American</strong><br />

Ambassador We are looking for members that would be willing to serve as a host family for our Australian youth that<br />

visit every year during the NWSS. We would also like our junior members to be thinking ahead about applying for the<br />

ALR sponsored trip to Australia every year.<br />

If you’re thinking you could never be a host family I’d like you to reconsider. You don’t have to have a fancy house or a<br />

large herd of cattle to take in these kids. This may be the only time they ever make it to the United <strong>St</strong>ates and they are<br />

looking to see as much of it as possible. We not only need people that will be in Denver to show them around the stock<br />

show, we also need families from all over that would open their homes to these kids even for a short time. We can work<br />

out ways to get the kids to your home if you won’t be in Denver; we just need people willing to make the commitment of<br />

being a host family. A big Thank You to Jamie Tummons and her family for agreeing to be host family to Christina and<br />

Hayden who will be coming here in January. If you are interested in letting them help you out or show your animals in<br />

Denver please let me know. We are also looking for families for next year. I know it sounds early to be thinking about<br />

that but we start early making the travel arrangements for these kids and knowing where they are going to stay would<br />

help out in the planning stages.<br />

How about applying to be our U.S. Ambassador Kids between the ages of 18-21 are eligible for the ALR sponsored trip<br />

to Australia. While in Australia you will stay with various host families, attend and show at the Sydney Royal and see the<br />

beautiful land of Australia. Please check out the ALR website for more information about this trip and how to apply.<br />

I was lucky to serve as host family for Heidi Cory last January. We learned more than I could ever imagine about<br />

Australia, their cattle and their culture. It is something my family will cherish forever. I encourage all of you to give this<br />

some thought. You never know, you just might have an Experience of a Lifetime!<br />

Three big questions:<br />

Ranch Management<br />

Consultants’ mission is to<br />

help farmers and ranchers<br />

improve their land, their lives<br />

and their bottom line. In his monthly newsletter, Ranch<br />

Management Consultants’ Dave Pratt says:<br />

“Since 1970, input costs have risen 5 times faster than cattle<br />

prices. From that same time the price of oil has increased 8 times<br />

faster than cattle prices. These trends have resulted in more<br />

reliance on off farm income and a significant reduction in the<br />

number of family ranches in the past 10 years.”<br />

He talks about the “Agriculturally Insane.” He cites<br />

“Conventional Wisdom” as a leading source of security for most<br />

ranchers but also as a reason so many of them keep the same production<br />

practices and expect the results to finally come around<br />

next year. Here is what Dave has to say about the...<br />

AGRICULTURALLY INSANE<br />

“I was recently asked if it was possible to lower production costs<br />

and reduce the capital intensive nature of ranching. My answer<br />

Sure. There are examples all around the world. There are individuals<br />

scattered across the U.S. who have been doing it for years.<br />

They are usually pretty easy to recognize. They probably drive a<br />

Toyota into town instead of a dual-axle 1 ton. They understand<br />

why they shouldn’t borrow money when their banker thinks they<br />

should. They tend to have smaller cows than your other neighbors.<br />

Their neighbors think they’re nuts.”<br />

“If we take conventional wisdom as the definition of sanity, they<br />

are nuts. But conventional wisdom says that ranching isn’t profitable.<br />

<strong>St</strong>even Covey defines insanity as doing the same things<br />

over and over and expecting different results. So, who’s more<br />

nuts, the rancher who does everything right (according to conventional<br />

wisdom) and expects things to come around, or the guy<br />

who’s doing everything “wrong” and making money”<br />

of these people depend on cattle for their livelihood. For many<br />

their cattle are more a hobby than a business. But profitability is<br />

not the driving motivation for many larger scale ranchers either.”<br />

Dave’s article is encouraging to Lowline breeders while also posing<br />

some challenges for us. We all know how easy Lowline cattle<br />

are to raise for smaller operations. Getting our message across to<br />

those “Conventional Wisdom” guys, who for the most part really<br />

don’t want to hear about it and are not that profit motivated is<br />

certainly a challenge. That the profitable cattle operations have<br />

“smaller cows than their neighbors” is a very promotable fact for<br />

the Lowline business. The 950,000 people (95% of the beef cowcalf<br />

producers) with less than 50 cows represent an enormous<br />

marketing opportunity if we can get our message across to those<br />

folks. Beyond that are the very large scale operations that could<br />

really benefit from the cost cutting, labor saving advantages of<br />

using Lowline bulls on first calf heifers while simultaneously<br />

bringing cow size down to lower inputs and improve maintenance<br />

cost efficiency.<br />

I recently loaned my neighbor a fullblood bull to breed his cows.<br />

This year, by his choice, he calved a little later than he normally<br />

would... mostly in May. Those May halfblood Lowline calves<br />

weighed an average of 498# the last week in October. Most were<br />

heifer calves, out of first calf heifers. One of the late April steer<br />

calves out of a 4-year-old cow weighed 576#. My neighbor was<br />

happy and made me a good deal to buy the calves. He will do<br />

some awesome word of mouth advertising locally for me and the<br />

Lowline breed! One small step to answer question number #3 but<br />

it is a start.<br />

Go to all of the local cattleman’s functions, feed store meetings,<br />

extension service seminars in your area and spread the good<br />

word about Lowlines and their cost cutting attributes. I think you<br />

will find a warmer reception this year when the entire nation is<br />

focusing on cutting costs in all of our operations.<br />

One cross with quality Lowline genetics will cut production costs<br />

quicker than with any other breed!<br />

There is a great big market out there for Lowline genetics.... let’s<br />

get after it!<br />

“One reason we cling to conventional wisdom is that the US livestock<br />

industry is not a for-profit industry. Of the approximately 1<br />

million people who own beef cattle, 950,000 own fewer than 50<br />

cows. They produce nearly 40% of the nation’s beef but very few<br />

New Registration/DNA Procedures Are in Effect<br />

As was reported in the Fall issue, the procedures for DNA parent<br />

verification and registration have changed as of November 1.<br />

These changes were necessary to a) keep up with an everincreasing<br />

volume of registrations as the ALR grows, and b)<br />

make it possible to submit registrations, especially fullbloods,<br />

online via the new web site. Here is an overview intended to<br />

help everyone adapt to the new routine.<br />

Members will now work directly with MMI to parent-verify their<br />

fullblood animals using DNA. This also provides the opportunity<br />

to request other optional tests from the same sample and some<br />

cost savings can be gained by ìbundlingî these tests.<br />

To order DNA supplies, call 800-311-8808, ext. 3016, or go to<br />

www.BreedTru.com. It is recommended that members always<br />

keep DNA supplies on hand. If the supplies are available, it<br />

might be convenient to collect a DNA sample while the animal is<br />

already caught up for another reason and not have to work them<br />

again just to collect DNA. The BEST sample is a small amount<br />

of blood on a Microcard. Hair and semen samples are accepted<br />

but with a surcharge of $7 per sample. In the case of twins a hair<br />

sample will be necessary.<br />

DNA samples should be sent to MMI Genomics along with a<br />

sample submission form. It is important to fill out the sample<br />

submission form completely, including tattoo, date of birth, registration<br />

numbers of sire and dam, etc. Keep in mind that the<br />

information on the DNA report will have to match up with the<br />

registration application later. On the sample submission form<br />

you also need to indicate how you want to receive your results<br />

from MMI. If you want to later register this animal via the ALR<br />

web site, you should request emailed results. You will then be<br />

able to upload the DNA report when you enter the registrations.<br />

You can also indicate that you want the ALR to receive a copy of<br />

your DNA report. Any reports that are received will be saved as<br />

an electronic “backup” copy. However you are still responsible<br />

for submitting the DNA report along with your registration application.<br />

If your DNA report(s) show qualification to the sire and dam as<br />

individuals and also the mating combination, you are all set to<br />

proceed with registration. If not, you will need to double-check<br />

your herd records and contact MMI to resolve the issue and<br />

achieve parent verification.<br />

If your registrations are for percentage cattle requiring no additional<br />

documents, or for fullbloods that only require a DNA<br />

report, they are perfect candidates for online registration. If<br />

A.I/breeding certificates, embryo recovery sheets, etc. will be<br />

required, the registrations should still be submitted on paper and<br />

ALL the required documents should be enclosed with the application(s),<br />

a completed self billing worksheet and payment.<br />

As of this writing, the ALR has 697 members. It is no longer<br />

feasible to try and match up pending applications with other documents<br />

that have come in from different sources and/or at different<br />

times. Our current volume of incoming work mandates handling<br />

each batch of work only once, not several times over.<br />

Registrations should be submitted with all necessary documents<br />

so that they can be completely processed when they are started.<br />

Work not qualified for processing will be returned.<br />

If you follow the current procedure, you should receive reliable<br />

and prompt service on your registrations and other services. If<br />

work is submitted without payment, documents required by the<br />

Rules, signatures, etc., you will not only delay your own service<br />

but also the service that other members receive.<br />

Once you have reviewed the registration forms, instructions and<br />

Rules for registration, please don’t hesitate to contact the office<br />

for assistance if you still have a question. Answering specific<br />

questions is one of the things we can do best. Questions that are<br />

too broad or vague are almost impossible to answer correctly<br />

because there are so many “IF’s” and unknown variables.<br />

Before submitting your work, please give it a once-over and<br />

make sure everything is signed and dated and that all required<br />

information is filled in. And, that any documents required by the<br />

Rules are enclosed. If you have a deadline coming up, such as a<br />

show entry, please use the “special instructions” to indicate this.<br />

Following the new procedures and double-checking that your<br />

work is actually ready to process before submitting it will contribute<br />

to better service and quicker processing for everyone.<br />

In the case of percentage/purebred bulls that are to be used as<br />

sires, or purebred/percentage cows who are flushed for embryos,<br />

their DNA profile simply needs to be put on file. This is so their<br />

progeny could later be verified back to them if necessary. They<br />

themselves are not required to be parent verified. Submit the<br />

sample, obtain the report and send a copy to the office with a<br />

note telling us why it was sent. Later, when you have calves to<br />

register, they should sail right through.<br />

Lowline cattle will be the feature breed for the 2010 Sydney Royal Easter Show with breeders from all over Australia (and some from<br />

New Zealand) converging to put together the finest line-up of Lowline cattle Australia has ever seen. The Sydney Royal is a 186-<br />

year-old Australian agricultural tradition and is Australia’s largest annual event. Seen as the iconic showcase of Australian culture and<br />

heritage, the show aims to recognize achievements in agriculture through competition whilst honoring our agricultural heritage.<br />

Lowlines were first exhibited at Sydney Royal in 1996, and it is a very great honour for them to be given this recognition amongst all<br />

cattle breeds in Australia only 13 years later. At the Sydney Royal, around 15,000 competitors showcase the very best in livestock,<br />

art, food and produce, all vying for the prestigious Sydney Royal Blue Ribbon.<br />

This Australian cultural event attracts between 900,000 and 1,000,000 visitors annually, making it the largest event in Australia and<br />

sixth largest agricultural event in the world drawing visitors from all over Australia and the world.<br />

From Tuesday 6th April until Wednesday 14th April, Australian Lowlines will be on display, judged and organizers will be offering a<br />

range of novelty activities, informative seminars and networking opportunities. If you’ve ever wanted to speak with a Lowline expert,<br />

Sydney Royal 2010 will be an amazing opportunity to do so!<br />

Some of the highlights of the program include calf capers (where calves and their handlers dress up in novelty costumes – a little bit<br />

like trick-or-treating with calves) and the Australian Lowline Tattoo (a once in a lifetime event, a Lowline-only parade in the centre of<br />

the main arena). Numerous informative sessions will also be conducted during as well as formal and informal social gatherings so<br />

Lowline enthusiasts from all over the globe can meet with one another.<br />

It is hoped that many of our fellow <strong>American</strong> Lowline breeders will be able to make the voyage Down Under to be a part of this historic<br />

and fun-filled event. See you in Sydney, April 2010.<br />

board has decided to hold the first auction to feature the “prime pages” in the Lowline Ledger for the<br />

upcoming 2010 year. By purchasing one or more of these pages (there are seven in all), the advertiser is<br />

guaranteed a prime spot for their advertising message in all four Lowline Ledger’s to be published in 2010<br />

We think this will create fun and excitement at the banquet and at the same time raise some always<br />

<strong>American</strong> Royal BBQ & Kids Q<br />

The <strong>American</strong> Royal BBQ Contest is the kickoff for the<br />

<strong>American</strong> Royal Livestock Show & Rodeo. This BBQ contest is<br />

one of the largest in the world. This year’s BBQ consisted of<br />

approximately 700 teams, this included the Open and Invitational<br />

competitions. Three continents were represented this year. In<br />

addition to the adult competition, there is also a Kids Q. This is a<br />

competition in which 50 kids in two age groups compete. The<br />

younger kids cook hamburgers and the older kids cook steaks.<br />

The Midwest Lowline Association stepped up to the plate donated<br />

both the hamburger and ribeyes to be used in the Kids Q.<br />

The organizers and judges of the Kids Q were very pleased with<br />

the consistency and quality of the meat donated by MLA. Since<br />

the meat was from one source, it leveled the playing field for the<br />

kids and the judges could judge primarily on the competitor’s<br />

ability.<br />

The MLA was invited to have<br />

a booth in the Expo center.<br />

We were able to cook and<br />

hand out samples to those<br />

attending the event. Not only<br />

did this allow us to promote<br />

the beef, it also provided us<br />

with a great opportunity to<br />

promote the Lowline breed.<br />

Over 60,000 people attended the three-day event; the expo hall<br />

was overflowing. We had a great response from not only the public<br />

attending the event, but also the other vendors in the expo<br />

hall. What a great marketing opportunity! We were even interviewed<br />

by Mark Farris of BBQ-TV!<br />

As part of this event, MLA provided Lowline briskets to a BBQ<br />

team in the Open division. The animals used were qualified for<br />

the contest, to ensure tenderness and<br />

marbling using ultrasound technology.<br />

The team was Mad Hogs and an<br />

Englishman. Barb Franks, Charlie<br />

Franks and Jim were great to work with<br />

and cooked up a brisket for us to hand<br />

out with our other samples at the expo<br />

center. The comments on the flavor and<br />

tenderness of the samples were outstanding.<br />

Many of the teams nationally and internationally are representatives<br />

for restaurants. Not only are they competing for the $25,000<br />

grand prize, but the name, recognition and prestige of winning or<br />

placing in the top 10 at a world famous BBQ contest is a great<br />

promotion for their business. Just like in the cattle industry, finding<br />

the edge is very important. Contestants in the BBQ contest<br />

are always looking for an edge, such as a finer texture, tenderness,<br />

marbling etc. Some of the competitors who sampled the<br />

Lowline beef feel this is what the Lowline breed can offer.<br />

After the <strong>American</strong> Royal, a high-placing, well known team<br />

wanted to try a Lowline brisket for a competition in Illinois. A<br />

brisket from a grass fed, natural 1/2 blood Lowline steer that had<br />

been ultra-sounded for tenderness, marbling, etc. was provided.<br />

The response was outstanding, the team placed 8th overall and in<br />

the brisket category received all high marks. Doc, who is the<br />

head cook for the team stated, “I believe this is the best brisket I<br />

have ever cooked. It was more like a filet mignon and my teammates<br />

as well as some of my close competitors were convinced I<br />

had cooked a filet mignon not a brisket.” He was very impressed<br />

with the tenderness, marbling and the natural beef flavor.<br />

We want to congratulate the team, Que’s Your Daddy, for their<br />

success, and thank them for their feed back and for handing out<br />

information on the Lowline breed. Thank you to the Mad Hogs<br />

and an Englishman on their success and for using Lowline beef<br />

and for their feedback.<br />

Thank you to: Karla Kovac for this marketing idea, her time,<br />

effort putting everything together and for helping to make this<br />

event a success. To Dick Miller, a Lowline breeder in Colorado,<br />

for providing the high marbling and tender Lowline-cross steers<br />

Regional Association News<br />

Midwest Lowline Association<br />

We are growing! With the addition of states the MLA is growing daily. During<br />

the <strong>American</strong> Royal we obtained more new members and were able to hold a<br />

physical meeting where we were addressed by the CEO of the <strong>American</strong> Royal,<br />

Mr. Jim McNair. Mr. McNair acknowledged our hard work in getting entries to<br />

increase in the <strong>American</strong> Royal Show and also commented on the MLA involvement<br />

with the <strong>American</strong> Royal Kids Q. All our efforts have been received with<br />

open arms since the <strong>American</strong> Royal is a non-profit organization geared towards<br />

the involvement of young adults in agriculture. Unlike other venues this show is<br />

an 11-week event starting in September and ending in November. Plans for next<br />

year’s event have already begun starting with the BBQ and going through the<br />

Lowline Show.<br />

We need to express many thanks to Kathy and Tom Fredrickson who so graciously<br />

prepared our great buffet prior to the sale at the Royal. Many thanks also to the<br />

members that helped. All the teamwork paid off as everything went very smooth.<br />

Another thanks goes to Norbrook Pharmaceuticals (www.norbrookinc.com) as<br />

they stepped up and donated many premium gifts that were high dollar and very<br />

useful to those that won them. Thank you also goes out to Bomac Vets Plus<br />

This year at the <strong>American</strong> Royal we had 70 entries and were acknowledged with<br />

great enthusiasm by our judge Mark Eberling. We hope to increase the number of<br />

entries again next year as this show is growing into a great event for us.<br />

As the year moves on the MLA is pulling together to work on other events to<br />

gain exposure for our breed throughout the Midwest. Mark your calendars for the<br />

Iowa <strong>St</strong>ate Fair and Nebraska <strong>St</strong>ate Fair in August 2010 and the <strong>American</strong> Royal<br />

at the end of October 2010.<br />

The MSLA sponsored NILE show was a great success this year. We had a total of<br />

72 entries from California, Idaho, Washington, Wyoming, Nebraska and<br />

Montana. I want to thank all of you for coming and helping with the show. Look<br />

for the show results in the show section of this Lowline Ledger.<br />

On Friday night the group had a Q & A session with Rick Dodd, Trevor Smith<br />

and Brian Walters. They shared some of what the Board has been working to<br />

attain this year and heard member concerns. It was a very informative evening.<br />

Thanks to the ALR “Hot Dog Money” we also had snacks and refreshments.<br />

I would like to encourage anyone in the Mountain <strong>St</strong>ates region to join MSLA to<br />

The Southwest Lowline Angus Breeders Association continues to grow in numbers<br />

as we strive to serve our members in the states of Arizona, Arkansas,<br />

California, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.<br />

SLABA sponsored the Open Lowline Show at the Houston Livestock Show and<br />

Rodeo in March. The results of that show were reported in the Ledger earlier this<br />

year. We will be sponsoring that show again in March of 2010 and also the Open<br />

Lowline Show at the <strong>St</strong>ar of Texas Fair and Rodeo in Austin, Texas immediately<br />

following the Houston show. We’re hoping that all exhibitors at the Houston<br />

show on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 will leave there and make the short drive to<br />

Austin for the <strong>St</strong>ar of Texas Show checking in that same evening of the 16th with<br />

the show to be held on March 18. Two shows in a week – two for one!<br />

There is great excitement in the state of California as plans are being made to<br />

either show or exhibit Lowlines at the Cal Expo – the state fair of California in<br />

Sacramento. That will be in July and August of 2010. We are inviting all members<br />

of the ALR and SLABA in the surrounding states to participate in what we<br />

anticipate to be an annual event. Let’s get it up and going. Contact info@slaba.us<br />

Two field days were held in the region in 2009. One was held at the Prime<br />

Lowline Angus annual ranch event in Hopland, California on April 18. SLABA<br />

director Jim Crawford and his wife Amy hosted the Field Day. Jim and Amy<br />

gave those who attended a first class tour of their ranch (which is maintained by<br />

sustainable practices). This was followed by a fantastic barbeque, and to top it off<br />

they provided a live band to entertain the guests! We’re all looking forward to<br />

this again next year.<br />

The second field day was held at the ranch of Larry and Kim Watkins in<br />

Groesbeck, Texas on September 25. Patti Seeley gave an excellent presentation<br />

of sustainable pasture practices, showing photos of how she had transformed<br />

some poorly performing pastures into productive, natural, multispecies grazing<br />

areas. We also were given a demonstration of show fitting using the Watkins’<br />

fine bull, Peyton. Lunch – great Lowline burgers – was cooked and served by<br />

Mark Roesler. A question and suggestion session followed where the members<br />

expressed their opinions and concerns about the association and direction it<br />

should move. Out of those discussions a committee was later appointed consisting<br />

of Sandra Walker, Bob Bard, Tim Jackson, Patti Seeley and Jim Crawford to<br />

address the disposition of extra Lowline bulls and steers. The board of directors is<br />

considering the recommendations of the committee at this time.<br />

<strong>North</strong>west Lowline Association<br />

2009 has been a busy year for the <strong>North</strong>west Lowline Association. We completed<br />

our biggest ever show ever at the <strong>North</strong>west Lowline Classic in Spokane in<br />

September with over 60 head from at least five states. A big thank you to the<br />

ALR Board members Brian Walters, Rick Dodd and Trevor Smith for coming to<br />

the 2009 <strong>North</strong>west Lowline Classic and keeping in touch with the NWLA. Jim<br />

Eldridge has taken over as our interim President after Gordon Lenhard resigned.<br />

Thanks Gordon for all your hard work. We appointed Beth Chudoba of<br />

Klammath Falls, Oregon to be our Vice President.<br />

We have increased our membership to over 40 members from Oregon,<br />

Washington, Idaho, California and Montana. We are looking forward to a great<br />

2010 and all the challenges that it will have. Our membership is working hard to<br />

expand the Lowline breed in the <strong>North</strong>west. We are currently planning a spring<br />

show at the Spring Washington <strong>St</strong>ate Fair in Puyallup in April.<br />

Some of our members also showed at the NILE in Billings Montana and will represent<br />

the NWLA in Denver in January. We are proud of all the hard work the<br />

NWLA and all of its members have put into making this a great year and a much<br />

improved association. We have some big goals set for 2010 including our<br />

<strong>North</strong>west Lowline Classic in September 2010 in Spokane and a possible sale to<br />

go along with it. This will be a great opportunity to see and possibly purchase<br />

some of the best genetics the ALR has to offer. We fully expect 2010 to be our<br />

best year.<br />
