Emergency Neurosurgery: Resident Review<br />

The ‘Emergency Neurosurgery’ course is a comprehensive topic based review course focusing on the<br />

diagnosis and management of conditions that result in acute or rapidly progressive neurological deficit for<br />

which neurosurgical evaluation and intervention is indicated. The topics covered include injury to the central<br />

and peripheral nervous system, neurovascular conditions, intra-cerebral hemorrhage, neoplasms,<br />

hydrocephalus, and pediatric neurosurgical emergencies. While the course is primarily designed as a review<br />

for neurosurgical residents it is evidence-based and neurosurgeons in practice may find it a useful review as<br />

well.<br />

By the end of this course participants will be able to:<br />

• Demonstrate the ability to recognize neurosurgical emergencies, while understanding and utilizing the<br />

body of evidence concerning intensive care and surgical intervention in neurosurgical emergencies<br />

• Understand the epidemiology, pathophysiology, surgical management, and early and delayed<br />

complications in the setting of neurosurgical emergencies<br />

• Recognize the importance of CanMEDs Roles with referring physician and other health staff in the<br />

management of a neurosurgical emergency<br />

• Develop tools and ways of working with colleagues, staff and patients and their families as related to<br />

CanMED Roles<br />
