Emergency Neurosurgery: Resident Review

The ‘Emergency Neurosurgery’ course is a comprehensive topic based review course focusing on the
diagnosis and management of conditions that result in acute or rapidly progressive neurological deficit for
which neurosurgical evaluation and intervention is indicated. The topics covered include injury to the central
and peripheral nervous system, neurovascular conditions, intra-cerebral hemorrhage, neoplasms,
hydrocephalus, and pediatric neurosurgical emergencies. While the course is primarily designed as a review
for neurosurgical residents it is evidence-based and neurosurgeons in practice may find it a useful review as
well.
By the end of this course participants will be able to:
• Demonstrate the ability to recognize neurosurgical emergencies, while understanding and utilizing the
body of evidence concerning intensive care and surgical intervention in neurosurgical emergencies
• Understand the epidemiology, pathophysiology, surgical management, and early and delayed
complications in the setting of neurosurgical emergencies
• Recognize the importance of CanMEDs Roles with referring physician and other health staff in the
management of a neurosurgical emergency
• Develop tools and ways of working with colleagues, staff and patients and their families as related to
CanMED Roles
