during a period <strong>of</strong> intense<br />
ryolitic volcanism in the Jemez<br />
<strong>Mountain</strong>s <strong>of</strong> north-central New<br />
Mexico about 6.5 to 7 million<br />
years ago. Large clasts in the<br />
tuff protect the s<strong>of</strong>t matrix below<br />
from erosion resulting in these<br />
conical formations from which<br />
the name "Tent Rocks" is derived.<br />
