For five years, we have worked in Ethiopia with
the Education for Development Association
(EFDA). The partnership is in a constant state of
change. Following an external evaluation in 2010,
the project was optimized with annual funding
of CHF 170,000 as follows:

menée en 2010, le projet, qui bénéficie d’un volume
de subvention annuel supérieur à CHF 170 000,
a été optimisé de la manière suivante:
From the beginning of 2011, the program now
includes ten primary schools in the district of
Sululta, where the aim is to improve the standard
of education within two and a half years.
Démarré début 2011, le programme compte à ce
jour dix écoles primaires dans le district
de Sululta, dont la qualité d’enseignement devrait
s’améliorer dans les deux ans et demi à venir.
The new focus is on the 70 members of the
ten community school committees. They
receive training and support in their efforts to
improve standards in the schools jointly with the
local authorities.
Les 70 membres des 10 comités scolaires des
écoles primaires font désormais partie des
objectifs prioritaires. Ils sont formés et soutenus
dans leurs efforts d’amélioration de la qualité des
écoles, en collaboration avec les communes.
3,000 children are taught in adequate space
equipped with tables and benches, and supported
with the necessary teaching materials.
Meanwhile, eight out of ten schools have access
to clean drinking water. Work is ongoing at
the other schools to achieve this same goal.
The community school committees are developing
activities to generate a small income for the
schools so that in the future new purchases can be
made without external donations and standards
can be maintained in the longer term.

dans des locaux adaptés, équipés de tables et de
bancs, et disposent du matériel pédagogique
nécessaire.
Huit écoles sur les dix ont désormais accès à
l’eau potable. Pour les deux autres écoles, cet
objectif est en cours de réalisation.
Les comités scolaires mettent sur pied des activités
permettant aux écoles de générer un petit revenu
pour qu’à l’avenir, elles puissent procéder à de
nouvelles acquisitions sans apport d’argent externe
et maintenir le niveau de qualité à long terme.
Due to the increase in numbers, there are still
considerable differences in standards across the ten
schools. One challenge is to achieve a minimum
standard by the end of the project in May 2013.
Although the community school committees are
encouraged throughout to be actively involved in
their roles and responsibilities, they still need
close monitoring and creative support to achieve
their goals. It is a balancing act for the EFDA to
become more involved in order to accelerate
matters without undermining the school committees’
personal responsibility. As yet, not all of
the schools have come up with stringent plans as
to how they might obtain an income for maintaining
the schools without too much effort and
risk. However, they are certainly able to see the
necessity for such measures.
La différence de qualité entre les écoles est encore
importante en raison de l’augmentation de leur
nombre. Le défi consiste, d’ici la fin du projet en
mai 2013, à atteindre une norme de qualité
minimale. Les comités scolaires sont généralement
motivés pour remplir activement leur rôle et leurs
responsabilités, mais ils doivent être étroitement
surveillés et bénéficier d’un soutien créatif lors de
la phase de mise en œuvre. Déterminer le niveau
d’intervention de l’EFDA dans le processus d’accélération
sans pour autant discréditer la responsabilité
des comités scolaires confine à l’exercice
d’équilibriste. Toutes les écoles n’ont pas encore
trouvé des idées convaincantes qui leur permettraient
d’obtenir, à peu de frais et de risque,
un revenu destiné à leur entretien, mais elles ont
conscience de la nécessité de telles mesures.
