2 <strong>HIV</strong> <strong>and</strong> hepatitis <strong>in</strong> prisons: address<strong>in</strong>g prisoners’ healthcare needs<br />

PRT <strong>and</strong> NAT also conducted focus groups <strong>in</strong> three selected prisons <strong>in</strong> Engl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> sent<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual questionnaires to be completed by <strong>HIV</strong>-positive prisoners <strong>in</strong> establishments hold<strong>in</strong>g<br />

people liv<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>HIV</strong>. Seven completed questionnaires were returned. PRT <strong>and</strong> NAT held<br />

consultative meet<strong>in</strong>gs with officials from <strong>Prison</strong> Health.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally NAT held meet<strong>in</strong>gs with two organisations <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>HIV</strong>-related prison work, Positively<br />

Women <strong>and</strong> +Ve.<br />

PRT <strong>and</strong> NAT will argue that the risks of <strong>HIV</strong> <strong>and</strong> hepatitis C <strong>in</strong> prison are <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g. People<br />

who are sent to prison have a right to expect that the state will protect their wellbe<strong>in</strong>g.Thus far,<br />

prisons <strong>and</strong> prison healthcare have failed to meet the needs of prisoners or do enough to<br />

prevent the transmission of these illnesses.With regard to viral hepatitis, this report focuses<br />

primarily on hepatitis C, though it <strong>in</strong>cludes, where relevant, some <strong>in</strong>formation about hepatitis B.
