That ’70s photo<br />

“I was a high school eco<br />

freak… determ<strong>in</strong>ed to<br />

devote my life to improv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the planet and reduc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

human suffer<strong>in</strong>g.” That’s how the Philadelphia<br />

native recalled h<strong>is</strong> teen-age dec<strong>is</strong>ion to head west<br />

to the then-new UW-<strong>Green</strong> <strong>Bay</strong>. He studied biology<br />

and helped organize environmental research<br />

and action <strong>in</strong>itiatives <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the Union <strong>of</strong> Young<br />

Environmental<strong>is</strong>ts, a national student organization.<br />

He cont<strong>in</strong>ued on to Wash<strong>in</strong>gton <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> St. Lou<strong>is</strong> and the Harvard School <strong>of</strong> Public<br />

Health, where he received h<strong>is</strong> master’s degree <strong>in</strong><br />

physiology and doctorate <strong>in</strong> epidemiology.<br />

Kriebel was among those pr<strong>of</strong>iled (above) <strong>in</strong> the<br />

May 2007 environmental<strong>is</strong>ts <strong>is</strong>sue <strong>of</strong> Inside UW-<br />

<strong>Green</strong> <strong>Bay</strong>.<br />

An alert reader e-mailed to help us date the classic UWGB photograph <strong>of</strong><br />

Earth Ball games on the lawn (cover, ‘Eco U’ <strong>is</strong>sue, May 2007). Though the<br />

<strong>is</strong>sue’s theme was 1970s activ<strong>is</strong>m, the photo most likely dates from spr<strong>in</strong>g<br />

1980, or perhaps later. Writes Michael J. Cassidy <strong>of</strong> Kohler, Class <strong>of</strong> 1982,<br />

environmental science, “I’m pretty confident the girl fac<strong>in</strong>g the camera…<br />

under the big earthball… <strong>is</strong> Patty Re<strong>in</strong>hard…” H<strong>is</strong> friend and classmate, now<br />

Patricia Re<strong>in</strong>hard Summers ’84 <strong>of</strong> Milwaukee, confirmed that ID. Cassidy<br />

th<strong>in</strong>ks another former classmate, Bruce Forrest, who attended through 1983,<br />

<strong>is</strong> to her left <strong>in</strong> the photo. Earth Ball was an iconic element <strong>of</strong> warm-weather<br />

campus life <strong>in</strong> the early years. Pr<strong>of</strong>. Jack Fr<strong>is</strong>ch rolled it out as a lesson <strong>in</strong> new<br />

and cooperative games for h<strong>is</strong> popular class Fundamentals <strong>of</strong> Interpersonal<br />

Communication.<br />
