Improvement Science 101: Don’t Sweat
the Small Stuff
Hamilton Schwartz, MD, FAAP
Jan Romito, MSN, NNP-BC
Transport programs need to continually
improve patient care delivery for their
patients to have the best outcome.
This session will introduce concepts of
improvement science and how to apply those
concepts in the transport environment.
PRACTICAL (topic presents until 12:00 PM)
Difficult Airway Simulation
Jamie Schwartz, MD
Elizabeth Berg, BSN
Airway management is a basic skill for
transport team members. Because of the
complexity of the pediatric and neonatal
patients that require transport, often their
airway management is quite complex.
During the session various ways to manage
difficult airways will be discussed and then
participants will have hands on practice of
the techniques.
12:00 PM Lunch Break - Visit Exhibit Hall
2:15 PM Plenary: No Pressure - Safety in 2010
Ira Blumen, MD
The transport environment is inherently more
dangerous than other medical environments.
Safety is the number one goal of transport
teams. Issues regarding safety and how
transport teams can perform safely will be
discussed.
3:15 PM Plenary: What We Learned from Haiti
Steve Krug, MD, FAAP
The disaster in Haiti uncovered multiple
gaps in delivery of medical care. Despite
the tragedy that occurred there are lessons
to be learned that can be used in future
disasters. What lessons were learned from
the standpoint of medical care delivery and
the process of delivery will be discussed.
CLINICAL (choose one; repeated at 5:15 pm)
PICU Trauma Cases
Michael Stroud, MD, FAAP
Trauma is a leading cause of mortality
and morbidity in pediatric patients. This
interactive session will permit attendees to
participate in case discussions of pediatric
trauma victims.
Maternal Transport
Steve Haemmerle, BS, RRT, NREMT-P,
needed to get started doing clinical research
in the transport environment.
Ambulance Safety in the 21st Century
Webinar Follow-Up
Renee Taylor, MSN, APRN, NNP
Most pediatric and neonatal patients are
transported by ground making safety on the
ground is as important as in the air. This
session will summarize the recent AAP
sponsored webinar on ambulance safety.
PRACTICAL (topic presents until 6:00 pm)
8:15 AM Plenary: Telemedicine in 2010
James Marcin, MD
Initial management of patients before the
transport team arrives impacts the patient
outcome. The ability of the receiving hospital
to be able to see the patient and to interact
with the referring physicians aids in that
management. A pediatric intensivist expert in
transport and telemedicine will discuss what
telemedicine has to offer to patients and
transport teams to improve care.
Air Leak Management
Patricia Ramsay, MD, PhD, FAAP
Barotrauma is particularly problematic in
the transport environment, especially air
transport. Management of barotrauma during
transport is discussed in this session.
NICU Cases
Sherrie Hauft, MD, FAAP
We will facilitate discussion and problem
solving of challenging neonatal transport
cases.
LEADERSHIP (choose one; repeated at 10:00 am)
Economics of Transport
Keith Meyer, MD, FAAP
This interactive session will analyze the
economic impact, advantages and potential
future of specialized neonatal and pediatric
transport teams. Both hospital based and
community models will be discussed.
Teaching with Simulation
Michael Trautman, MD, FAAP
11:00 AM Plenary: Team Training
Michael Meyer, MD, FAAP
Because of the large variety of pediatric and
neonatal patients, transport teams require
General Course Information
Course on Neonatal and Pediatric Critical Care Transport Medicine
October 3-5, 2010 • San Francisco, CA
Target Audience: Physicians, nurses, respiratory care
practitioners, paramedics, administrators, policy makers,
and other healthcare professionals.
Program Description: The Section on Transport
Medicine is hosting the biennial Course on Neonatal and
Pediatric Critical Care Transport Medicine in conjunction
with its academic and scientific program.
Through the Transport Course the Section assembles
people from diverse regions, disciplines, and practice
settings to learn and share their expertise in the
challenging field of neonatal and pediatric transport
medicine. The Conference will open with the Section’s
scientific and academic program. The primary focus of
the plenaries will be the state of interfacility transport
medicine in 2010. Abstracts on the latest neonatal and
pediatric transport research will also be presented.
Specialty trained transport teams develop unique skills
for extending advanced care to patients during transfer.
These teams working with specialized centers and
referring pediatricians create a vital continuum of patient
care and pediatric community education. The second day
of the conference will include multiple aspects of neonatal
and pediatric transport medicine. Highlights include a
presentation on the science of sleep, a panel discussion
on work hours, a session on what we learned from Haiti
as it pertains to disaster preparedness, and a breakout on
difficult airway simulation.
The final day of the conference will offer a plenary on
telemedicine in 2010, another plenary on team training,
and day two of lively breakout sessions.
Program Objective: The 2010 Course on Neonatal and
Pediatric Critical Care Transport Medicine & Section
Program covers two half days and one entire day
highlighting the latest advances in transport medicine.
It addresses the latest clinical issues regarding the
care of transport patients as well as the administration,
planning, and delivery of pediatric inter-facility transport.
Participants will also have a great opportunity to network
with other transport teams.
