Our conservation area is of great concern to the Parish Council which tries hard to maintain a clean and attractive village. The surface has been cleaned and is swept regularly. We now need co-operation from Huntingdonshire District Council who are oddly reluctant to enforce planning regulations in the village centre, and from those residents (it has to be said - mostly young) who meet there and leave behind evidence of their activities. On a more positive note, thanks to all the pubs for their gardening displays. The most public are the Talbot and the Stilton Cheese, but if you haven't visited the Bell or the Country Club pop in and admire their gardens too. A long list of front gardens have been nominated for the Parish Council Shield. Results will be in September's SCAN. Browns of Stilton By the time you read this, Browns will have ceased trading from the shop in Church Street, defeated by the present economic climate. Many people will be saddened because, in the few years Browns have been here, the shop has been a real asset. (Apart from contributing to the parking problems!) The friendly and efficient staff are to be thanked and we hope that they soon find other employment. We also hope another use is found very soon for the lovely shop building. While Browns was not a traditional village shop, its disappearance does prompt the thought: 'use it or lose it' in the context of other village businesses and services. Local News SCAN 291 Aug 2009 Memorial Hall On September 1st, Janet Greenfield will take over as Treasurer of Stilton Memorial Hall, in succession to Brenda Whalley. Brenda has been associated with the Hall for many years, going back to acting as W.I. representative. She was Chairman for a long time and stayed on as Treasurer. The Management Committee are very grateful to her for her great service; its not too dramatic to say that she kept the Hall afloat with the help of a very few. Missed Refuse Collection In recent weeks, sacks of refuse and recycling have been left lying around for several days until the District Council, prompted by the Parish Council, arranged a collection. Any resident who does not have wheelie bins, and would like them, please ask the District Council (01480 388388). If you cannot accommodate the bins please note the arrangements for collecting the bags supplied. These should be put outside your property no earlier than the previous evening and by 7am of the collection day. SCAN 291 Aug 2009 4 Stilton Parish Council JULY 2009 MEETING TOPICS On 14th July the first meeting was held in the new Parish Meeting Room. Playing Field The Parish Council was pleased that applications to use the field have been received from Stilton United Football Club, the Junior football club (which hopes to field two teams), the Church Youth Project and the long-term youth project. CCTV planning has still some technical problems to solve. The entrance will be completed soon and seats placed near the skate park. This will be finally completed shortly. New 'dog' bins for the bridleway are on order. Grass verges on North Street Work on behalf of Anglian Water was not completed satisfactorily as the verges were not fully reinstated. The company responsible will be contacted. Telephone Box After years of effort, the new door turned out to be an incorrect model which does not close properly. BT are to be approached yet again. Barn Close Play Area After consultation with local residents the seat will be removed. Also, one piece of equipment may be relocated. The sign will be relocated to improve visibility. Tree work will be put in hand in the autumn. Village Walk In the next few weeks councillors will be making inspection visits to all areas of the village to note all the repairs, improvements etc. so that these can be presented to the relevant Councils and organizations. Tell advertisers you found them in SCAN! Parish Rooms Project Over 200 people visited the rebuilt mortuary building during the Flower Festival and universally expressed their delight and surprise. (See SCAN’s report on p7) Considerable interest has already been shown in using the new meeting room, which will available by September for hire by small groups. Full details will be in SCAN, but anyone interested in the meantime should contact the Parish Clerk, Mrs Croll, 10 Caldecote Road. The success of the open weekend was due to the efforts of Mary Croll and Doug Maltman, assisted by Olive Main and John and Yvonne Warner. Planning applications 20 Church Street While some welcome changes to the plan were noted the issues of access, road congestion and safety and flooding and the allocation of money to Sawtry Village College remain. The Chairman was asked to put these objections to Huntingdonshire District Council. Next Meeting Please note Stilton Parish Council does not meet in August. The next meeting will be on Tuesday Sept 8 at 7.30pm. Got it Taped? Has anyone got a reel-to-reel tape recorder that could be used to download a music tape? Please contact Madeline Vickers on 240609 Memorial Seats People with long memories will recall the metal seats that stood outside the Pavilion on the old playing field. Placed in memory of Jim Wayland, they were moved to the Stilton Cheese. We are very pleased they are now to return to the new field to remind us of the long contribution to village life made by Jim and the Wayland family. We also want to acknowledge the loss to village life by the recent deaths of Kurt Richards, John Bayliss and Walter Shaw. Tell advertisers you found them in SCAN!
