There was <strong>the</strong> feel<strong>in</strong>g that FBOs should develop messages to address <strong>in</strong>fidelity, but it was not clear<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r this was actually done:<br />

Not everyone <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> church has a partner who is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> church, <strong>and</strong> some men <strong>and</strong> some women are<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> church <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir partners are not, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y have relationships outside <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir relationship<br />

with <strong>the</strong> partner, even though <strong>the</strong> partner is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> church. So <strong>the</strong> message… should be clear that<br />

you could get HIV even if, when you are <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> church.<br />

In at least four FBOs, <strong>the</strong>re was said to be variation <strong>in</strong> messages about HIV <strong>prevention</strong>. Among church<br />

board members, leaders who are older, long‐st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g members, whose op<strong>in</strong>ions are strongly expressed,<br />

would be most readily heard. FBOs <strong>in</strong>volve a power structure <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> leaders <strong>of</strong> <strong>organisations</strong> at church,<br />

national or <strong>in</strong>ternational levels can <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>and</strong> content <strong>of</strong> HIV <strong>prevention</strong> messages. In<br />

one FBO, <strong>the</strong> world govern<strong>in</strong>g body decides on <strong>the</strong> appropriate <strong>prevention</strong> messages with respect<br />

to HIV or o<strong>the</strong>r STDs. One leader receives direction from <strong>the</strong> regional <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> denom<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong><br />

Tr<strong>in</strong>idad. Interviewees also emphasised that leaders at local or <strong>in</strong>ternational level generally engaged<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation‐ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> consultation before reach<strong>in</strong>g decisions. With<strong>in</strong> churches, <strong>the</strong>re may be<br />

dissent<strong>in</strong>g voices “but <strong>the</strong>y’re not loud.” This implies that views that do not concur with established<br />

doctr<strong>in</strong>e tend to be ignored.<br />

Some churches had an active programme to encourage abst<strong>in</strong>ence among youth. A message was that<br />

“just one sexual act can throw you over <strong>the</strong> edge for life”. In one FBO, both male <strong>and</strong> female youth were<br />

encouraged not to be ashamed to proclaim <strong>the</strong>ir virg<strong>in</strong>ity. This leader expressed that <strong>the</strong>re was <strong>the</strong><br />

underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong>re are youth who may “fall through <strong>the</strong> cracks, but you still keep lov<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m<br />

<strong>and</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong>m”. Ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>terviewee acknowledged that youth tend to be curious about sex,<br />

but said that <strong>the</strong>y are encouraged to absta<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> are given educated reasons as to why <strong>the</strong>y should do<br />

so, <strong>based</strong> on Christian values <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciples. Some FBOs used testimonies from people affected<br />

by HIV to re<strong>in</strong>force <strong>the</strong> message. An <strong>in</strong>terviewee gave <strong>the</strong> example <strong>of</strong> a female member who spoke <strong>of</strong><br />

her experience <strong>of</strong> nurs<strong>in</strong>g her daughter until she died, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> woman was said to have described <strong>the</strong><br />

experience <strong>in</strong> graphic detail. The <strong>in</strong>terviewee recalled,<br />

[She described] terrible suffer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> I th<strong>in</strong>k that jolted some young people. I mean I have not<br />

heard her message <strong>the</strong> last five years but I still remember it. It was so vivid, <strong>and</strong> it was said with<br />

passion when she pleaded with… children <strong>and</strong> young people about <strong>the</strong> preservation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves.<br />

Op<strong>in</strong>ions regard<strong>in</strong>g condom use varied. Some <strong>in</strong>terviewees completely disapproved condom use,<br />

whereas o<strong>the</strong>rs acknowledged <strong>the</strong>m as methods <strong>of</strong> HIV <strong>prevention</strong> among youth, or as birth control<br />

for married couples. Among <strong>the</strong> latter condoms were seen as an <strong>in</strong>ferior alternative to abst<strong>in</strong>ence<br />

<strong>and</strong> fidelity, not to be used “as a first l<strong>in</strong>e [<strong>of</strong> defence]”. Some <strong>in</strong>terviewees stressed that condoms<br />

should only be used by married couples as <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>the</strong> only people supposed to have sex. This was<br />

somewhat ironic s<strong>in</strong>ce ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>terviewee po<strong>in</strong>ted out that husb<strong>and</strong>s are especially unwill<strong>in</strong>g to use<br />

condoms with <strong>the</strong>ir wives, though <strong>the</strong>y may be will<strong>in</strong>g to use <strong>the</strong>m with <strong>the</strong>ir o<strong>the</strong>r partners.<br />
