by JBL, was to New York to see The Who play live with
Robert Plant as the support act. That was a particularly
sweet trip as the invitees – aside from the corporate
types who’d been invited but left during the concert
because it was too loud or the seats weren’t sufficiently
comfortable for their delicate backsides – were all close
buddies: Steve N Harris who had paid for his own flight
to NY, JBL’s Gary Mardell (now back working in the
UK after several years in France), Paul Messenger and
Andrew Everard. I can’t think of a better bunch of guys
with whom to spend a weekend in New York.
On another personal note, I must mention that
the April/May 2003 issue carried an obituary for one
of the prime movers –THE prime mover, in truth – in
my becoming involved with this industry, Roger
Macer of the Söund Örganisation. Dear Roger, who
consumed so much Jack Daniels that his local, The
Market Porter in Southwark, won a prize for selling
the largest quantity in Greater London – and Roger
was the only person in the place who drank JD – sadly
died in Poland where he was working and living at
the time. Not many people today will recognise that
Roger near single-handedly and quite inadvertently
founded an industry: there would probably be no
equipment support business had not Roger invented
the SÖ turntable table. His original Dexion confection
gave birth to a business from which several folks have
made, and probably continue to make, millions of
pounds. So, if you manufacture support furniture, the
next time you’re in the pub, please raise a respectful
glass to Roger.
October/November 2003 was our last ‘personality’
cover. Our next issue carried the headline “From
Geek to Sleek. The PC becomes the centre of home
entertainment”, in which we introduced the concept
of the Media Centre as a device that didn’t need
any special installation because it was effectively a
mainstream commodity before it started. This heralded
the growth of hard disk-based components and
the arrival of other DIY client/server devices such as
the popular Sonos music system and Slim Devices’
Transporter. The world of home entertainment would
never be the same again…
