UPSTART MAY 2011
LETTERS
Dear Upstart
My name is Chwayita Mfihlo, I am a
grade 11 student at Simzamile Senior
Secondary School. Writing has always
been my hobby. Since I was in
grade 8 I wrote different plays and
stories but kept them in my drawer.
This year I finished writing a book titled
“ILISHWA liyakwazi kowalo”. It is
a nice book to read, everyone in my
class loves it. But the only problem is
I don’t know what to do, I don’t know
how to move forward because if I
write and put my stuff in the drawer I
am wasting my time.
I always dreamt of having a publisher
and publishing this book but I don’t
know what to do anymore. Please
help.
Yours faithfully
Dear Upstart
I write this letter to encourage the
youth in Grahamstown. Jokes are
done. If you were studying with friends
and like to work with friends, now is
the time to get serious and improve
on your work. This is the time for you
to show your strengths and powers to
pass the examinations. Education is
your responsibility; don’t place your
hope on anyone else. It is now the time
to get friendly with your books.
When you are studying, be calm and
take your time. There is no need to
rush because the way you study will
determine your results. To those who
do not submit their work, it is very
important to submit each and every
piece of work because this will help in
the end. Please praise the Lord before
writing your exams, because He will
fight for you and save you.
Advice Column
Dear Auntie Stella
I am a 17 year old girl and I am in love with a boy two years older than me. My
problem is that he always wants me to satisfy him in ways that hurt my feelings.
We kiss and hug which I like very much but I don’t let him have sex with me. He
says he will go blind if I continue to make him stop half-way.
My girlfriends tell me that if I want to keep him, I have to have sex with him. I’m
worried that he will sleep with other girls if I say no, so should I sleep with him
He says everyone has sex at our age.
Zandile
Dear Zandile
It’s hard when two people want different things from each other. Many people
decide to wait until they are older or married to have sex and there are many advantages
to this decision. When you are older, you are emotionally more ready to
have a relationship. Also, if you don’t have sex, you are not at risk from STIs, HIV
and unplanned pregnancies.
In the meantime, it’s good that the two of you can hug and kiss and then stop. This
is a wonderful way of showing how much you love each other. Don’t worry, boys –
and girls – can stop any time with no ill-effects.
However, many young people believe that once you start touching and kissing you
end up having sex, so it’s better to spend time together with friends, instead of
alone cuddling and kissing.
In the end young people must decide what is right for them without pressure from
anyone else. Talk to your boyfriend. If he truly loves you, he will understand.
If you decide to have sex later, be sure to use a condom. Talk about this before – it’s
harder if you leave it to the last minute. Remember, girls can get and carry male or
female condoms. Good luck.
Dear Upstart
We heard a story about a boy who was under the age of eighteen years who had
lots of friends. His class teacher said that he was a very bright boy. His parents
divorced two years ago and he was dealing with it.
At school during break time he saw his friends drunk and he thought that would
be really cool. He lied to his parents saying that they were going on a school trip
to East London so he asked for money. His parents gave him what he needed
because every parent does love their children. He spent all the money with his
friends on booze and they dropped out of school.
Our advice is that young people must stop telling lies to their parents. Whatever
money you are given at home, use it wisely. Choose the right friends and make
the right choices.
