Great Rom<strong>an</strong>tics Festival Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary<br />

The Great Rom<strong>an</strong>tics Festival celebrated its<br />

10th <strong>an</strong>niversary in October 2004. A threeday<br />

schedule filled with concerts, lectures,<br />

<strong>an</strong>d social activities marked the first decade<br />

of one of North America’s most interesting<br />

music festivals. The city of Hamilton,<br />

Ontario (CAN), in association with the<br />

Americ<strong>an</strong> <strong>Liszt</strong> Society <strong>an</strong>d the School of<br />

the Arts at McMaster University, sponsored<br />

the event.<br />

The festival beg<strong>an</strong> on October 7 with a<br />

lecture on “New Found <strong>Liszt</strong>” by William<br />

Wright of Glasgow, Scotl<strong>an</strong>d. Wright<br />

spoke about <strong>Liszt</strong> tr<strong>an</strong>scriptions of works<br />

by Hérold, Pezzini, <strong>an</strong>d Schubert. (See the<br />

article by Wright elsewhere in this issue.)<br />

This was followed by a recital performed<br />

by Alex<strong>an</strong>der Serendenko, entitled “Out<br />

of Russia,” which featured works by<br />

Balakirev, Rachm<strong>an</strong>inov, <strong>an</strong>d Prokofiev.<br />

Christ’s Church Cathedral was the location<br />

for <strong>an</strong> org<strong>an</strong> recital by Robert Morrow,<br />

featuring works by J.S. Bach <strong>an</strong>d Brahms.<br />

The Arthur-LeBl<strong>an</strong>c String Quartet,<br />

consisting of Hibiki Kobayashi <strong>an</strong>d Brett<br />

Molz<strong>an</strong> (violins), Je<strong>an</strong>-Luc Plourde (viola),<br />

<strong>an</strong>d Ry<strong>an</strong> Molz<strong>an</strong> (cello) performed the<br />

Beethoven String Quartet in F Minor, Op.<br />

95 (“Serioso”). Pi<strong>an</strong>ist Valerie Tryon later<br />

joined the group for a perform<strong>an</strong>ce of<br />

Schum<strong>an</strong>n’s Pi<strong>an</strong>o Quintet in Eb, Op. 44.<br />

After the chamber music concert, the<br />

particip<strong>an</strong>ts in the Festival were guests at<br />

a reception hosted by the D<strong>an</strong>te Alighieri<br />

Society. The day’s concluding event was a<br />

stellar concert that included a perform<strong>an</strong>ce<br />

by the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra<br />

with Robert Trory, conductor, <strong>an</strong>d violin<br />

soloist Jonath<strong>an</strong> Carney. The program<br />

consisted of the Weber Overture to “Der<br />

Freischütz, the Sibelius Violin Concerto, <strong>an</strong>d<br />

Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5.<br />

Friday, October 8, beg<strong>an</strong> with a pi<strong>an</strong>o<br />

recital by Miriam Gómez-Morán. The<br />

program included the Two Rhapsodies<br />

from Op. 79 of Brahms, <strong>an</strong>d Schum<strong>an</strong>n’s<br />

Faschingschw<strong>an</strong>k aus Wien <strong>an</strong>d the less-often<br />

heard F<strong>an</strong>tasiebilder. Following shortly<br />

thereafter was a lieder recital presented by<br />

Lita Classen, sopr<strong>an</strong>o, <strong>an</strong>d All<strong>an</strong> Beh<strong>an</strong>,<br />

pi<strong>an</strong>o, of songs by Schubert, Wolf, <strong>an</strong>d<br />

Strauss. A post-luncheon recital of music by<br />

Schum<strong>an</strong>n (Violin Sonata in A Minor <strong>an</strong>d<br />

the Davidsbündlertänze) <strong>an</strong>d Brahms (Violin<br />

Sonata in D Minor) was performed by Earl<br />

Carlyss (violin) <strong>an</strong>d Ann Schein (pi<strong>an</strong>o).<br />

Shota Nak<strong>an</strong>o’s afternoon recital included<br />

the Chopin Ballade in G Minor <strong>an</strong>d<br />

Nocturne in Db Major, Schum<strong>an</strong>n’s<br />

Kreisleri<strong>an</strong>a, <strong>an</strong>d Rachm<strong>an</strong>inov’s Second<br />

Sonata, <strong>an</strong>d concluded with Ravel’s La Valse.<br />

Afterward, McMaster University President<br />

Peter George hosted the festival at a<br />

reception in the McMaster Student Centre.<br />

Jonath<strong>an</strong> Summers beg<strong>an</strong> activities on<br />

Saturday, October 9, with a lecture on<br />

“Chopin <strong>an</strong>d the Keyboard.” ALS New<br />

York chapter founder Gila Goldstein<br />

followed with recital perform<strong>an</strong>ces of<br />

a chorale prelude by Brahms <strong>an</strong>d his<br />

monumental Variations <strong>an</strong>d Fugue on a<br />

Theme by Händel, Op. 24. Immediately<br />

following was a recital of lieder by Fr<strong>an</strong>z<br />

<strong>Liszt</strong>, performed by J<strong>an</strong>et Obermeyer<br />

(sopr<strong>an</strong>o) <strong>an</strong>d Leslie De’Ath (pi<strong>an</strong>o).<br />

In a recital reminiscent of the 19th century,<br />

with multiple pi<strong>an</strong>ists involved, the festival<br />

was treated to the concluding musical<br />

event of the weekend: a perform<strong>an</strong>ce of the<br />

complete Chopin Études, Op. 10, Op. 25,<br />

<strong>an</strong>d Op. posth. Participating in this great<br />

finale were William Aide, Jay Hershberger,<br />

Thomas Mastroi<strong>an</strong>ni, Ann Schein, Alex<strong>an</strong>der<br />

Serendenko, <strong>an</strong>d Valerie Tryon.<br />

The concluding activity was a B<strong>an</strong>quet by<br />

C<strong>an</strong>dlelight at the Hamilton Convention<br />

Centre, at which Al<strong>an</strong> Walker made a<br />

special presentation discussed elsewhere in<br />

this issue.<br />

The next Great Rom<strong>an</strong>tics Festival will take<br />

place in October 2005, with exact dates to<br />

Concert, <strong>an</strong>d Trinity United Methodist<br />

Church Concert.<br />

The ALS Festival in Lincoln will<br />

present four winners of the <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong><br />

<strong>International</strong> <strong>Liszt</strong> <strong>Competition</strong>. Joseph<br />

Tsai (age 13), Katherine Harris (age 15),<br />

<strong>an</strong>d Soonmee Kwon (age 23) were all<br />

first-place winners in their respective<br />

divisions in 2004. Martin Leung (age<br />

18) received first-place in 1998 <strong>an</strong>d<br />

2000 <strong>an</strong>d was the youngest contest<strong>an</strong>t to<br />

receive recognition in the 2002 Budapest<br />

Concert division. CDs <strong>an</strong>d videos from<br />

the 2004 competition will be available at<br />

the ALS Festival in Lincoln.<br />
