6 Certificate / License Programs Paralegal Certification Introduction to Real Estate According to the Department of Labor, legal occupations will increase by about 131,000. This growth reflects continued demand for legal services from government, individuals, and businesses alike. Paralegals and legal assistants are expected to account for 46,900 new jobs as legal establishments attempt to reduce costs by assigning these workers more tasks that were once performed by lawyers. (www.bls.gov) As the need for legal services has increased, the demand for paralegals has risen. More paralegals are being hired by law firms, banks, government agencies, corporations, and real estate agents than ever before. This non-academic credit program is especially designed to prepare participants for a career in Paralegalism. The program curriculum consists of courses which combine instruction in substantive law with practical procedural skills and is designed to meet the educational needs of career oriented adults. To earn a Paralegal Certificate, a student is required to successfully complete a total of ten courses. Classroom instruction is one night a week for eight weeks. A limited number of online courses are approved for the Paralegal Certificate. Students must contact the Paralegal Coordinator for instructions before taking an online course. Fall 2013 Courses LAW004 Introduction to Paralegalism This required course offers an introduction to the various tasks performed by paralegals. Gain a solid foundation for professional success and a thorough grounding in the paralegal profession, as well as an overview of what paralegals are expected to know and do in the workplace. Mondays, September 9 - October 28 6:00-8:00 pm Course Fee: $139 Instructor: Rebecca McCorkel; CEU: 1.6 LAW044 Preparing for Depositions and Trial This class will focus on the paralegal’s role in helping the attorney prepare for depositions and trials, as well as other court hearings. You will learn how to review discovery documents and organize them so they are readily available to the attorney and correspond with each witness expected to testify; identify and highlight important and relevant portions of documents and transcripts; label documents as exhibits for use at trial; and, make use of technology. REQUIREMENTS FOR AN ALABAMA REAL ESTATE LICENSE: Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident alien or legally present in the U.S; Be at least 19 years old; Show proof of bona fide residency in any state in the U.S.; Show proof of high school graduation or GED; Not have been convicted of a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude; Not have had a real estate application or license rejected or revoked in any state within the past two years. After meeting the education and/or experience requirements, pass the licensing examination. State exam must be taken within 12 months of successful completion of Introduction to Real Estate course. Course ID: BUS001 Begins Monday, September 16 and will meet every Monday and Wednesday until November 4, 5:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Instructor: Dwight Wells; CEU: 6.0 Course Fee: $325. Payment is expected at the time of registration. Cancellations received at least 24 hours prior to class time will receive a full refund. Once a course begins, refunds will not be issued. Books are to be purchased at the campus bookstore for an approximate cost of $85. Students need to read the first three chapters of the text before class begins. Community Band Sponsored by Troy University Participants will have the opportunity to perform marches, light concert selections and novelty tunes in a community band setting.
