DAY 2—Saturday, April 28 Free Day in Sedona Several options were available for the free day in the famous red-rock beauty of Sedona: Pink Jeep tours, Sedona trolley tours, a selfguided driving tour, browsing Sedona’s famed art galleries and shops, or being leisurely at the host hotel. Many CARavaners opted to take the driving tour and were treated to the fabulous red-rock views at the much-photographed Red Rock Crossing, the Sedona Airport overlook, Uptown Sedona, and the Chapel of the Holy Cross along with a stop at the quaint Tlaquepaque shopping village. Indians came to the Sedona area in about 8000 BC where they hunted large ice age mammals. By about 700 AD the Hohokam Indians arrived, followed by the Sinaguan tribe (meaning without water) in about 1066 AD. The Anasazis joined the Sinaguans, but they all disappeared in the 1300's for unknown reasons. In more recent history, Sedona was made famous by the many cowboy movies filmed in the area, and by books written by Zane Gray. DAY 3—Sunday, April 29 Sedona to Flagstaff to Williams After a quiet day in Sedona it was on the road again with a morning drive up beautiful Oak Creek Canyon with its switchback curves and steep grades and great views of the canyon at every turn. The Arizona sun was shining brightly and the temperature was ideal for the Classics at about 70 degrees, as the CARavan climbed from the 4,500 foot altitude of Sedona to about 7,000 feet at Flagstaff. Following a walking tour of old Flagstaff, the group headed for the Museum of Northern Arizona where docents guided us through exhibits about native American culture, the Colorado (River) Plateau and its history. A special treat was a spectacular new photo exhibit of the Grand Canyon. The Museum parking lot provided abundant “photo ops” for our Classics, with parking scattered among tall pine trees. A catered buffet lunch was served at the museum.
