Jan. 1: Mild weather, a huge crowd and the annual<br />
strawberry drop greeted <strong>2012</strong> for the annual New Year's<br />
Eve celebration in downtown Harrisburg.<br />
Jan. 3: John Campbell was sworn in as <strong>Harrisburg's</strong> new<br />
city treasurer. Looking on are Susan Brown-Wilson,<br />
Sandra Reid and Brad Koplinski, who took the oath of<br />
office for City Council.<br />
Jan. 6: Mayor Linda Thompson, with the help of students,<br />
Fire Chief Robert Talloni and Freddy, the friendly fire dog,<br />
launched the city’s new fire safety van and fire public<br />
education program outside Downey Elementary School.<br />
Jan. 7: Unusually calm January weather brought record<br />
crowds to the <strong>2012</strong> Pennsylvania Farm Show, which<br />
marked its 96th year.<br />

Jan. 16: The Harrisburg High Players performed "Oh<br />
Freedom! Excerpts from Black Souls" at the MLK Day of<br />
Service opening ceremonies at Camp Curtin School.<br />
Jan. 16: Volunteers bundled up against the cold as they<br />
scraped windows outside of the Broad Street Market<br />
for the MLK Day of Service, which attracted hundreds of<br />
volunteers for projects throughout Harrisburg.<br />

Jan. 18: Dana Shoaf, editor of Civil War Times, lectured<br />
at <strong>Harrisburg's</strong> National Civil War Museum on 1862 as<br />
a critical year in war. His talk was part of the opening<br />
reception of the musuem's latest exhibit, "1862," which<br />
will be on display through the end of the year.<br />
Jan. 20: David Detweiler of Cornerstone Coffeehouse<br />
holds his winning latte during <strong>Harrisburg's</strong> first "barista<br />
throwdown," at Midtown Scholar. Hannah Mattingly,<br />
right, of Little Amps placed second in the contest, which<br />
rewarded the finest in latte decoration.
