Introduction<br />
The Planning Department commissioned the “<strong>Urban</strong> <strong>Design</strong> <strong>Guidelines</strong> for <strong>Hong</strong><br />
<strong>Kong</strong>”(the Study) in early 1998 with a view to preparing a set of guidelines to<br />
promote public awareness on design considerations, and to provide a broad<br />
framework for urban design assessment.<br />
The overall objective of the Study is to promote <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>’s image as a worldclass<br />
city and to enhance the quality of our built environment in functional and<br />
aesthetic terms at both macro and micro scales.<br />
The Study covers major topics relating to urban design with special emphasis on<br />
the following which are relevant to the day-to-day work of town planners and related<br />
professionals in <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>:<br />
