Field Guide to the Native Trees of the A.C.T.
This pocketbook describes 60 species of trees of four metres or more that
are known to grow naturally within the boundaries of the ACT. It is written
for the non-specialist and has instructions on how to use a botanical key.
For easy reference it is divided into three parts - Eucalypts; Acacias and
other species, with trees that are similar placed side by side.
Each species is treated separately and isf ully illustrated, with a thumbnail
map to show where authenticated specimens have been collected. A key
to all species, index and glossary are provided.
The Field Guide is useful in the neighbouring Southern Tablelands
(Goulburn, Cooma, Kosciusko National Park).

GENERAL MEETINGS
Held at 8 pm. Room 1, Griffin Centre. Bunda Street, Civic
Professor Henry Nix, Director of the Centre for Resources and Environmental Studies, will speak
about the Greenhouse effect. An opportunity to ask an expert about the changes we can expect to
our climate, vegetation and sea-level in the next century.

Graham Wells (Director, National Parks Association of NSW) will give an illustrated account of his
recent walk (and some rafting) with three companions through trackless rainforest, swamps,
heathlands, sand dunes and mangroves from Coen to the tip of Cape York in Queensland - a
distance of 600km in 56 days. The last person to do this may have been Edmund Kennedy in 1848.
Crocodile and wasp avoidance techniaues, (fast) tree climbing ability for wild cattle, and a sharp
pair of secateurs were all essential. Soon to appear in Dick Smith's Australian Geographic.
MAY-Thursday 19
Dr Peter Hunt, presenter/producer of ABC radio's weekly environmental program Earthworm, will
address the meeting. He has promised us a mixture of the serious and the entertaining, and his talk
will range from mining and the environment to the challenge of making conservation more than just
a marginal issue in our society. Peter is a talented, knowledgeable and humorous speaker, so don't
miss this meeting.
