As always, the annual<br />
Awards Banquet hosted<br />
by the <strong>Wisconsin</strong> Medical<br />
Alumni Association (WMAA)<br />
was a highlight <strong>of</strong> Alumni<br />
Weekend. On Friday evening,<br />
May 8, 2009, friends and<br />
family members gathered<br />
to honor alumni and others<br />
who have made exceptional<br />
contributions in several areas.<br />
The WMAA’s top honor,<br />
the Medical Alumni Citation<br />
Award, was presented to<br />
Dennis Maki, MD ’67.<br />

Harvey Wichman, MD<br />
’65, was given the Medical<br />
Alumni Service Award, which<br />
honors an alumnus who<br />
has exhibited exceptional<br />
commitment to the WMAA.<br />
A lifetime member since<br />
1970, he served as president<br />
from 2000 to ’02 and was a<br />
board member from 1992<br />
to 2006. He led the effort<br />
to create the first WMAA<br />
strategic plan and to establish<br />
an affiliation agreement<br />
between the WMAA, the<br />
medical school and the UW<br />
Foundation. Wichman was a<br />
class representative for more<br />
than 10 years. He completed<br />
his internship at Mt. Sinai<br />
Medical Center in Milwaukee<br />
and his orthopedic surgery<br />
residency at the <strong>University</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> Louisville Hospitals. He<br />
joined Milwaukee Orthopedic<br />
Specialists in 1970.<br />
Dorothy Barbo, MD<br />
’58, received the Ralph<br />
Hawley Distinguished Service<br />
Award, which honors an<br />
alumnus who has made<br />
outstanding contributions<br />
to the local community.<br />
Since retiring from the<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> New Mexico<br />
(UNM) Medical <strong>School</strong> in<br />
1999, Barbo has worked in<br />
mission and government<br />
hospitals overseas. She<br />
trained in obstetrics and<br />
gynecology at the Lutheran<br />
Hospital <strong>of</strong> Milwaukee and<br />
did a gynecologic oncology<br />
fellowship at the Medical<br />
College <strong>of</strong> <strong>Wisconsin</strong>, where<br />
she later served on the faculty.<br />
While a faculty member<br />
at the Medical College <strong>of</strong><br />
Pennsylvania, she established<br />
the Center for the Mature<br />
Woman. At the UNM, she<br />
was medical director <strong>of</strong><br />
the <strong>University</strong> Center for<br />
Women’s Health.<br />
