Humane Education
Educating the public in general and donkey owners
specifically about the proper care and stewardship of
donkeys is a key part of our mandate.
Visiting the Sanctuary is a vitally important way for
people to become acquainted with the nature and
needs of donkeys. We also share with visitors our
fundamental belief in the interdependence of all
living things and the fact donkeys, and all animals,
are sentient beings who feel pain and stress.
Highlights from several of our on-site education
initiatives include:
• Donkey Talks - 3 times a day on Open Days
which cover basic donkey care, their history,
and daily patterns.
• Bray for Hay - information on the DSC equine
diet and its importance for equine health and
comfort; provides opportunity for visitors to
buy bales of hay or straw for the DSC and
get their name displayed on a Bray for Hay
donation wall. (This discourages visitors from
bringing carrots and apples that lead to weight
gain while explaining why they're not needed)
• Individual donkey/mule/hinny specific
information and stories as well as the general
donkey talk
• Permanent shelf space and removal of tables
has allowed for more hands-on items to be
displayed (hooves, bones, shoes, teeth)
• Books for all ages on donkeys and donkey care
• Donkeys on leads in the learning center
paddock
• Permanent access to the developing Wetland
Centre
We also encourage visitors to visit and explore
Wild Duck Marsh and the interactive trails, which
provide information about the flora and fauna that
exist in the marsh.
We respond to numerous requests from donkey
owners who have questions about diet, health care,
teeth and hoof care, and socialization. A number of
informational videos were developed at the DSC by
a generous donor and will become part of how we
educate broader audiences.
In 2012, we increased the number of speaking
engagements we do about donkeys and the DSC to
such groups as Probus clubs, churches, and senior
centres.
Our Facebook page now has nearly 2,500 fans.
We post educational and fun material regularly.
Excellent attendance at the Donkey Talks on Open Days - the talks are popular with people and animals alike.
