The last few months have been a
most exciting time for sport in
Nova Scotia. The initial build-up
to the Canada Games culminated
in a wonderful two-week event
that showed the power of sport
and captured the interest of Nova
Scotians and Canadians.
The opportunity for our athletes
to compete at home, in front of their
friends and family, is one they surely
won’t forget. I’m sure, for Nova Scotia
sport enthusiasts, it was something
we won’t forget either, and Sport
Nova Scotia would like to
congratulate all our Team
Nova Scotia athletes on the
way they represented our
province. We couldn’t be
more proud of you.
We’re also extremely
proud of the rest of Team
Nova Scotia—the coaches,
managers, mission staff and
other support workers—
who not only helped our
athletes during the Games
themselves, but helped
them get there. Their
work over the years and
months leading up to the Games was
exceptional, and we applaud their
passion and commitment. Finally,
we’d also like to say thank you to all
those who weren’t an official part of
Team Nova Scotia, but were certainly
as important to our athletes as
anyone else: that would be parents,
relatives, and all those who made
so many sacrifices so our athletes
could take part in the training and
competitions that helped them make
their way to Halifax for this great
Games Legacy Just
Beginning
event.
From a broader perspective, we
need to recognize all Nova Scotians
who helped make the Games
themselves a success. There were
literally thousands of people from
across the province who volunteered
over a period of years in order to
help the Host Society stage a truly
wonderful event. The volunteers
were proof that there are so many of
us who truly believe in the importance
and value of sport in our province,
and our communities.
The great thing is the value
and importance of sport can
only benefit from hosting
these Games. The real effect
is far from over; in fact it’s just
beginning. Sport Nova Scotia,
through our role as legacy
manager, will now start our
real work.

start our real work. We’ll be working
with Provincial Sport Organizations
and their community members as
we seek to maximize usage of our
new and upgraded facilities and
equipment, and of course our legacy
fund that will help community sport
organizations provide new and
enhanced opportunities so more
Nova Scotians can reap the health,
educational, and other benefits that
sport participation provides.
And while we’re speaking of the
benefits of sport, we hope you have
a chance to view our latest Sport
Makes a Difference campaign. This
year, we’ll be focusing on those sport
benefits that we speak of so often.
There are many wonderful outcomes
that result from sport participation,
and this year we’re focusing on some
of the social development
benefits that sport can
provide. We’re hoping we
can make even more Nova
Scotians aware of the fact
that sport participation has
positive impacts on student
performance, helps reduce
youth crime, and generally
improves the quality of life
for those who take part. In
addition, we’re hoping that
this message will help even
more Nova Scotians decide
that they’d like to be part
of our sport community,
by taking part and helping create
chances for others to take part too.
Hosting the Canada Games was
a wonderful opportunity for Nova
Scotians to show their pride of
place, and their belief in the positive
impact sport has on our province.
Now, we’re hoping you’ll continue
to help as we work to make sure all
Nova Scotians have the opportunity
to participate, so that even more of
us can gain the advantage that the
benefits of sport provide.
