Thompson Peak Hospital Reaching 

New Heights 

Thompson Peak Hospital Healing Garden Lobby 

Being the “new kid” on the block can be challenging. 

Thompson Peak Hospital, the newest addition to 

Scottsdale Healthcare’s network of world-class facilities, 

has more than met the challenge and in fact, has 

flourished since opening just three years ago. 

The 64-bed facility located in North Scottsdale at the 

corner of Thompson Peak Parkway and Scottsdale Road 

reflects a new generation of hospitals. In fact, many first 

time patients and visitors do a double take when they 

enter the lobby to make sure they are in a hospital instead 

of a resort. Decorated in warm, neutral colors that reflect 

a calm elegance, the hospital was designed as a healing 

place from start to finish. The hospital boasts not one, but 

two gardens - directly beside the lobby is the H.N. and 

Frances C. Berger, Thomas and Joan Kalimanis Healing 

Garden. This award-winning courtyard oasis includes 

two fountains, patio areas and hundreds of plants. The 

Thompson Peak Community Garden in honor of Mary 

Alice Sheely is located directly beside the hospital café and 

provides a scenic waiting area for visitors and employees. 

Adding to the ambiance throughout the hospital is 

artwork depicting Arizona scenery from local artists and a 

boutique style gift shop in the lobby dedicated in honor of 

Elaine Parker. Jean Knoedler, Thompson Peak Hospital 

vice president and administrator says, 

“This beautiful hospital was built for 

the community by our friends and 

neighbors. You can see the footprint 

of philanthropy in everything that we 

do here from the Auxiliary lobby to 

the Elaine and Jack Parker Education 

Center. Donors are the caring core of 

our hospital and we are so grateful for 

all of their support.” 

In addition to its calming atmosphere, Thompson Peak 

Hospital offers an array of services including: emergency 

department and accredited Chest Pain Center; intensive care 

unit; surgical services; and a full complement of outpatient 

services - radiology (X-ray) and laboratory services. 

Diagnostic services include Arizona’s only MRI and CT 

Ambient lighting MRI / CT room 

with a special in-room ambient lighting feature where 

patients select from a variety of colorful scenes which are 

displayed on the ceiling and the room is bathed in a matching 

color. This ambient lighting experience has been shown 

to reduce the need for sedation and creates a soothing 

environment for patients (adults and children). 

All the while, patient satisfaction remains extremely 

high with 93 percent of respondents in a recent 

patient satisfaction survey saying they would recommend 

Thompson Peak Hospital to friends or family members. 

This is five percent above the national average of 88 

percent. “We are extremely grateful for the continued 

support of our community, physicians and our donors who 

have helped us achieve so much so quickly,” says Jean. 

The hospital in a short time has also established itself as an 

internationally recognized minimally invasive surgery center. 

“Physicians and medical teams travel from across the United 

States and one team came from Italy to observe our robotic 

surgical procedures,” explains Regina Montero, R.N, 

robotics coordinator. “This is quite an accomplishment 

for a community hospital. With the introduction of the 

daVinci robot, we were able to expand our scope of minimally 

invasive procedures to now include orthopedics, neurology, 

spine, urology, gynecology and general surgery.” 

While the staff can look back with a sense of pride, the focus 

now turns to the future. n

Health & Healing Unit Providing Care & Comfort 

Women undergoing treatment for cancer can find 

a comforting environment in the Women’s Health 

and Healing Unit. Located on the second floor of the 

hospital, this special place supports the needs of women 

receiving treatment for gynecologic cancer including 

ovarian, uterine and cervical cancer. “In terms of a 

medical facility, Thompson Peak is unique, different. 

The hospital represents a sanctuary – it is not only a 

technical place, but a comforting place as well,” says 

Mike Janicek, M.D., gynecology/oncology. “For me 

and my patients, Thompson Peak Hospital really 

combines the best of both worlds – the small hospital 

experience with the medical expertise of a larger facility.” 

Dr. Janicek is Medical Director of the unit, in addition 

to his role as Medical Director of the Genetic Risk 

Assessment Center at the Virginia G. Piper Cancer 

Center. He is also one of the Valley’s few gynecologic 

oncologists. His leadership of the Women’s Health 

and Healing Unit is a true testament to his dedication 

to patients and to Thompson Peak Hospital. “Many 

of these patients are traumatized,” he adds, “This unit 

helps with their journey. It’s not as much about the 

bricks and mortar as it is about the staff and the way 

they treat patients. The nursing staff, operating room 

team, everyone here is phenomenal. The unit also has a 

dedicated Nurse Practitioner who brings an added layer 

of care and comfort. Many patients have to be readmitted 

several times and it gives them such a sense of comfort 

coming back to a place and people they know 

and trust.” n 

Diane’s Story 

An Inspiring Lesson in 

Love & Determination 

For Diane Dean and her husband, Bill, going to 

Thompson Peak Hospital is like coming home. 

Diane has spent a great deal of time in hospitals during 

the past 19 years in her battle against ovarian cancer. 

This vibrant and kind woman has experienced many 

ups and downs in her journey; however, one thing is 

certain…her special connection with the employees and 

physicians at Thompson Peak Hospital. “I love the staff, 

they make this hospital so special,” she says. “They came 

to my aid and went the extra mile to make sure that I 

was comfortable. Actually, they made me feel like 

I was the only patient here!” 

More than a year ago, Diane was referred to hospice 

care. “We decided that we weren’t going that way,” 

chimes in husband Bill, whom Diane lovingly calls her 

UPN – Unlicensed Practical Nurse. Now, Diane has 

rebounded, thanks in part to her Thompson Peak family, 

and is doing great. Due to the rigors of past treatment 

including multiple surgeries and radiation treatment, she 

receives her daily meals through a process called Total 

Parenteral Nutrition (TPN). Fed each day through an 

IV, Diane jokingly says, “It’s my steak and lobster.” 

“I have been well taken care of and I am very lucky,” 

Diane adds. “Ovarian cancer is a silent killer. I encourage 

women to pay attention to their bodies – know the 

warning signs and take action immediately.” n

Part of a Winning Team 

If you ask retired National Football League (NFL) 

player Nick Lowery to go take a hike, he will jump 

at the chance. 

Known as “Nick the Kick,” Lowery is the former 

placekicker for the Kansas City Chiefs and New 

York Jets. He also lays claim to having the most field 

goals in NFL history and is currently ranked tenth 

on the league’s list of all-time scoring leaders. 

The exuberant athlete has dedicated his post NFL 

energies to charitable and public service, with a 

focus on children and Native American youth. He 

started the Nick Lowery Youth Foundation and also 

heads up Champions for the Homeless. 

When Nick discovered that he required a partial 

knee replacement he wanted only the best - surgeon, 

medical team and hospital. His search brought him 

to Stefan Tarlow, M.D., orthopedic surgeon, and 

to Thompson Peak Hospital. “Dr. Tarlow is an A+ 

physician. As a patient, he pays attention to you and 

takes the time to get to know you and what is best 

for you,” Nick says. “The hospital staff was fantastic 

and the environment was calm, peaceful – a great 

place to recoup. It was the best hospital experience!” 

Just nine days after surgery, Nick was at the White 

House attending the launch of the President’s 

Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition. 

These days, Nick is pain-free, “I’m feeling better than I 

have in 15 years. I have Dr. Tarlow and Thompson Peak 

Hospital to thank for getting me back in great shape!” 

Nick is just one of a growing number of patients of 

Thompson Peak’s Orthopedics and Spine program. 

“Recently, a promising new option for our partial knee 

replacement program became available at Thompson Peak 

Hospital. MAKOplasty technology provides a minimally 

invasive approach for surgeons to use when a patient 

requires partial knee replacement, like Nick’s,” says 

Dr. Tarlow. 

“I am really pleased with the level of staff here, we all work 

together with one common goal…to provide great patient 

care,” says Dr. Tarlow. “We really are developing best-in-care 

methods for total knee, hip and spine care. From a 

physician’s perspective, there is a high level of confidence 

in the clinical team and a key member of the team is the 

dedicated Orthopedic Nurse Practitioner who is on-site 

and able to immediately respond to patient needs.” 

Future plans include the addition of a Center for Personalized 

Wellness, a multi-disciplinary clinic for the prevention, 

diagnosis and treatment of sports related injuries for the 

athlete in all of us and construction of a dedicated inpatient 

Orthopedic and Spine Unit. 

“Our goal is to be here for the community, for our neighbors 

and to help keep them healthy,” says Jean Knoedler, vice 

president and administrator. “We want to be the ones to help 

answer their healthcare questions, provide help in an 

emergency and support them in their recovery process.” n

Introducing the Hybrid 

OR 

Just as there are smart 

cars and smart phones 

soon there will be a “smart” 

Operating Room at 


Osborn Medical Center. 

Known as a Hybrid Operating Room (OR), this area 

combines the world of radiology imaging, interventional 

catheterization lab and surgical technologies all in one 

room for heart and vascular patients. 

Previously found in just a few large academic medical 

centers, this novel and revolutionary approach to 

patient care is on the horizon for fall of 2011.

“With the Hybrid OR, instead of taking the patient 

to the operating room, we are bringing the operating 

room to the patient,” says Peg Morehouse, R.N., 

director, Heart and Vascular Services. 

Currently, if a patient is undergoing a cardiac 

catheterization procedure and it becomes necessary 

to perform a surgical procedure, the patient is moved 

from the catheterization lab into an operating room. 

With the Hybrid OR, the patient stays in place with 

the interventional cardiologist, electrophysiologists 

or interventional radiologists and heart and vascular 

surgeons all working side-by-side in the same room, 

at the same time. “Having everything in one room 

saves valuable time and eliminates the need to 

transport a patient from one room to another,” 

explains Maulik Shah, M.D., interventional 

cardiologist. “This could make a big difference in 

many cases and ultimately may even save lives.”

With ceiling-mounted equipment and more than 800 square 

feet, the futuristic OR will be larger than a traditional operating 

room and offer an open and spacious environment for 

physicians and patients. “We have many patients who 

previously we were unable to treat; however, with the Hybrid 

OR we will be able to offer them this new technology,” says 

Dr. Shah. State-of-the-art equipment means higher quality 

and better imaging with more in-depth 3D visualization 

which gives us a better sense of where we need to go, what 

the problem is and how we can solve the problem.” 

Dr. Shah adds, “With more catheter-based procedures for 

example, heart valve replacement, we can bring new procedures 

to our community-based hospital. Patients won’t have 

to travel 

to receive 

the latest 

treatment.

The new Hybrid OR opens up a new world in Cardiovascular 

Surgery. Dr. Thomas Wareing, cardiovascular surgeon 

explains, “The evolution of new surgical techniques means 

smaller incisions which result in faster recovery time and 

allows us to treat sicker, older and more fragile patients.” 

With this new approach also comes opportunity for physicians. 

“This will be a win-win situation for everyone,” Dr. Wareing 

says. “We have experienced great success with the use of 

endografts to repair aortic aneurysms. Now, with the Hybrid OR, 

we will have the capability to use new, less invasive techniques. 

This really is exciting. The Hybrid OR enhances our practices in 

every way; it also gives hope to patients who before, were unable 

to receive treatment.” n

The Honor Ball 2011 

Celebrates 35 Years of Community Philanthropy 

One of the Valley’s most enduring, fun and successful 

black-tie events, Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation’s 

Honor Ball, celebrated its 35th edition on February 5. 

More than 800 guests attended the ball which was 

held at the Phoenician Resort where the Grand 

Ballroom was bathed in vibrant colors of coral and 

jade in tribute to the 35th anniversary. Two lounge 

areas also known as “Studio 35” flanked the main 

stage area and offered a retro respite for those who 

wanted to take a break from the packed dance floor. 

The Jacqueline Foster Orchestra provided the night’s 

entertainment which included musical medleys 

from Michael Jackson to hits from the 80s and 90s.

The enthusiastic crowd danced the night away and 

donned colorful masks and neon flashing glasses. 

This year’s historic event was chaired by a special 

committee of past Honor Ball chairmen. Twenty-five 

past Honor Ball chairmen were on hand and 

recognized with beautiful custom made sashes 

bearing their names and the year in which they 

chaired the Honor Ball. 

Natalie and Ed Gaylord took center stage and 

were recognized as the 2011 honorees. This 

dynamic couple was honored for their extraordinary 

community service, philanthropy and support of 

Scottsdale Healthcare, including the new Gaylord 

Family Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Scottsdale 

Healthcare Shea Medical Center. Ed also serves 

on Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation’s Board of 

Trustees and is chair of the Scottsdale Healthcare 

Community Cancer Advisory Committee. 

It was truly a family affair for the Gaylords as Natalie 

and Ed’s four young sons were on hand to witness 

the outpouring of appreciation for their parents. 

While the festivities proved once again that The 

Honor Ball is truly one of the Valley’s “best parties,” 

the night’s main purpose was echoed by Tom Sadvary, 

president and chief executive officer of Scottsdale 

Healthcare, “We are here tonight enjoying this 

wonderful party; however, there is a higher purpose 

to the ball. All proceeds will benefit patient research, 

programs and services of the Virginia G. Piper Cancer 

Center at Scottsdale Healthcare.”

David Arnt 

A former President and Chief 

In Tribute 

Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation celebrates the lives of three extraordinary friends and compassionate humanitarians. 

Executive Officer of an auto parts 

manufacturing company, Mr. Arnt 

was an enthusiastic champion of 

innovation and helping others. 

Philanthropy was a family passion 

shared by Dave, his wife, Louise 

and passed on to his daughter Mary Ann Winter. 

For more than 27 years, Mr. Arnt gave generously in 

supporting a variety of patient programs at Scottsdale 

Healthcare including the Debi Bisgrove Cancer Care 

Coordinators, General Endowment and the Scottsdale 

Healthcare Research Institute. He graciously served 

on Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation’s Cardiovascular 

Advisory Council and was a Charter Member of the 

Legacies of Distinction. In 2001, the Blood and Marrow 

Treatment room at the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center 

was dedicated in honor of David and Louise. His gifts 

included a patent of the “Equalizer,” an invention 

designed by Mr. Arnt that makes cars and trucks safer. 

“I can’t think of anyone who was more passionate about 

supporting Scottsdale Healthcare than Mr. Arnt,” said 

John Ferree, president, Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation. 

“He will be missed.” 

Hartley Barker 

Known for his infectious smile 

and zest for life, Hartley and his 

wife, Ruth, were deeply involved 

in nonprofit organizations in 

both Wisconsin and Arizona. 

He was a generous supporter 

of many organizations including Rotary, McCormick 

–Stillman Railroad Park and the Boys and Girls Clubs. 

Since 1998, the Barkers were generous supporters of 

Scottsdale Healthcare. They were recognized in 2004 with 

the coveted Doctor of Philanthropy award given by Scottsdale 

Healthcare Foundation to individuals whose significant 

impact on Scottsdale Healthcare has created a lasting legacy. 

In 2006, Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation 

recognized the Barkers’ generosity with the dedication 

of the Ruth and Hartley Barker Peripheral Vascular 

Imaging Interventional suite at Scottsdale Healthcare 

Osborn Medical Center. “Hartley was a close personal 

friend,” said Tom Sadvary, president and chief 

executive officer of Scottsdale Healthcare. “I admired 

his intellect, wit, humor and devotion to his family, 

friends and to Scottsdale Healthcare.” 

Hartley faithfully represented Scottsdale Healthcare 

through his participation as Secretary of the Scottsdale 

Healthcare Foundation Board of Trustees. He was 

also an esteemed member of the Heart and Vascular 

Community Advisory Council and the Emergency/ 

Trauma Advisory Council. 

E. Louis Werner, Jr. 

Lou was an avid pilot, swimmer, 

traveler, wordsmith and 

philanthropist. He supported 

a number of charitable 

organizations including the 

Phoenix Symphony, Valley 

Presbyterian Church, the San 

Francisco Theological Seminary and Scottsdale Healthcare 

Foundation. Through their generous spirits, Lou and wife 

Sandy were instrumental in enhancing patient services 

and were recognized in 1998 as honorees at Scottsdale 

Healthcare Foundation’s Honor Ball. Through their 

thoughtful giving, the Werner Support and Resource 

Center now stands within the Virginia G. Piper Cancer 

Center. There, patients and families can seek help and 

support in learning more about cancer – diagnosis, 

treatment options and prevention. 

Lou also shared his passion for golf and was an active 

member for many years of the Foundation’s golf 

committee. For 18 years, Lou served nobly as a member 

of Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation’s Board of Trustees. 

“Lou Werner was a remarkable man whose ‘always 

optimistic’ and vitality of life was inspiring to all who 

knew him,” said Laura Grafman, executive vice president, 

Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation.

On November 11, 2010, more than 100 Circle of Distinction and 

Legacies of Distinction members gathered to meet “The Many Faces 

of the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center.” The evening’s program 

began with a special (and surprise) salute to Jack Parker. Jack was 

presented with the Doctor of Philanthropy award –one of the highest 

honors that the Foundation presents to an individual or couple. 

Assisted by his good friends Bob Duffy, former Chairman 

of Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation’s Board of Trustees, and 

Colonel Park Shaw, Jack received the monogrammed Doctor of 

Philanthropy coat and stethoscope. 

For more than 25 years, Jack and his late wife, Elaine, have 

generously given to Scottsdale Healthcare. “We are thrilled to 

present this very distinguished award to Jack Parker,” said John 

Ferree, president of Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation. “Your 

generosity has played a vital role in the introduction and growth 

of many services and programs at Scottsdale Healthcare, most 

notably for our Thompson Peak Hospital.” Last year with Jack’s 

support, an endowment was established for Thompson Peak 

Hospital. Recently, the Parkers were honored with the dedication 

of the Elaine and Jack Parker Education Center at Thompson 

Peak Hospital. 

Immediately following the award ceremony, guests were treated to 

a video tribute featuring cancer survivors and former patients of the 

Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center. In keeping with the theme, “The 

Many Faces of the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center,” a diverse 

panel representing the many areas of the Cancer Center provided 

the latest news on research, patient services and resources. 

The panel was moderated by Mark Slater, Ph.D., vice president 

of research at Scottsdale Healthcare, and included Michael 

Demeure, M.D., scientific director of the Endocrine and Rare 

Tumors Program; Joyce Schaffer, R.N., cancer clinical trials 

coordinator; and Janet Young, breast cancer survivor. n

To Live, To Learn, To Love, 

TO LEAVE A LEGACY 

Two wonderful people who loved life, each other and helping others 

Wolfgang and Rosa Maria Kayser were German citizens 

who made the United States their home in 1961. 

Wolfgang’s work with Siemens as a research and 

development engineer brought them first to Massachusetts 

and later to Arizona, where they would retire. His work as 

a researcher would later influence his passion to make 

a difference in the lives of others. 

Several years ago, Wolfgang and Rosa trusted and 

admired the work that Scottsdale Healthcare was doing. 

They decided that they wanted to continue to support 

these efforts today, and for the future, even after they were 

gone. In 2000, the Kaysers met with representatives from 

egacy 

Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation and designated the 

Foundation as the beneficiary of their estate. 

Wolfgang and Rosa enjoyed over 50 years of good times 

and good friends until his death in 2007. At that time, 

Rosa decided that the future bequest of their estate would 

be in the form of a medical research endowment. This 

seemed to be the perfect fit with Wolfgang’s work as a 

researcher and her earlier career as a nurse in Germany. 

By creating The Wolfgang and Rosa Maria Kayser 

Medical Research Endowment, it was Rosa’s hope that 

many lives will be saved because of new medical discoveries. 

She said, “We did not live to think only of ourselves. We 

always looked for ways to help others. Our gift will 

continue to help people beyond our lifetimes.”

Wolfgang and Rosa’s wishes will be fulfilled. Rosa 

passed away in August and their estate will continue 

their legacy of compassion, care and new frontiers in 

medical research. n

live forever since only the income is used annually.

Foundation may be for a specific dollar amount, 

a percentage or fraction of your estate, or a part 

of all the residue of your estate after other 

specific bequests have been paid. A bequest 

to Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation may also 

be in the form of a trust, providing income to 

another individual for life, with the trust principle 

coming to the Foundation upon the death of the 

income beneficiary.

T.I.M.E. 

Golfers, friends and neighbors 

joined together to support the Debi 

Bisgrove Cancer Care Coordinators 

at Playing for T.I.M.E. last November. 

Playing for T.I.M.E. (Technology, Imaging, 

Management and Education) is a popular event, 

founded by a group of community leaders in 1995 

and has raised more than $1.6 million. 

More than 65 golfers participated in the 16th annual 

T.I.M.E. at Gainey Ranch Golf Club. Just two weeks 

later, close to 200 ladies enjoyed lunch, cards and 

other games all in fun and to support a great cause. 

“The Cancer Care Coordinators serve as a single 

point of contact for cancer patients, offering 

guidance and education from the time of diagnosis to 

treatment and follow up,” said event co-chair Robbin 

Lieberman. “We are honored to be able to present 

the Playing for T.I.M.E. events to help patients in 

their cancer journey.” n
